Lurgio News for November 30, 2018

LURGIO NEWS
November 30, 2018
Dear Lurgio Community,

As we head into the home stretch before holiday break, the buzz of excitement in the building is palpable. Students are particularly energized for the second dance of the school year, which will take place on Friday, December 7th. I’d like to take this opportunity to offer my annual formal “Not a Formal” reminder to all Lurgio families. As a tradition, many students have chosen to dress up for the December Holiday Dance. That said, there is no formal attire requirement, and many students dress as they would at any Lurgio event. So, no need to fight the holiday shopping crowds to pick up a ballroom gown or dinner jacket.

All the best,

Ed Joyce
Principal

New News

Cub of the Week

Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cub is Logan Sfeir. Logan is inclusive of his peers, particularly in Physical Training. He has shown patience, leadership, kindness, and compassion with his classmates. Thank you Logan for helping to make Lurgio a wonderful place to learn. Congratulations.

Social Media Presentation

On Tuesday, December 4th, Detective Matt Fleming of the Bedford Police Department will be giving a presentation to our seventh and eighth students on social media. In this age-appropriate presentation, he will present some of the dangers that can arise when using social media and how to be safe. The last time Detective Fleming visited our school two years ago, he received rave reviews from both students and faculty. With many of our students utilizing social media is some shape or form, it is our hope that this type of education helps our youth avoid potential unfortunate pitfalls.

On Tuesday evening at 7 PM in the Lurgio Media Center, Detective Fleming will give a presentation that is geared toward parents. Click here to view our flier. The content of the evening presentation is more mature, and therefore parents should exercise caution before bringing their children to this event.

Winter Sports Pictures

Winter sports pictures will take place on Friday, December 7th from 3:15-5:15PM in the gym. All athletes should bring their uniforms and meet their team in the gym. These photos will go into the RAL 2018-2019 yearbook and are available to order. Order forms will be sent home with athletes early next week or may be accessed digitally here.

Student Projects

8th Grader to support WZID’s Radiothon

Every year, for two days, the 95.7 WZID radio station has the “Christmas is for Kids Radiothon”. During this Radiothon donations are collected so the kids in New Hampshire who are less fortunate can open presents during the holidays. Faith Guttman, Lurgio 8th Grader, and her entire family are championing this effort here in our Bedford schools. Faith will be setting up a collection box in the Lurgio Main Office this Monday. If you wish to donate, we are accepting coins, cash, and checks. Checks are to be made out to WAYPOINT (formerly Child and Family Services). If you need a tax deduction receipt or would like to donate using a credit card, please reach out to Helena Guttman, BSN, RN, WAYPOINT’s program nurse, at (603) 722-3148. If our school generates enough money, the Lurgio Middle School will be thanked live on the radio! Collections will run through the seventh of December.

Book Buzz

Books for Breakfast is abuzz about these books this week!

Mrs. Parker from FACS was a guest speaker today at B4B! She shared Marissa Meyers' book Renegades:
Every person is born with powers and in the community there are two groups: the Anarchists vs. the Renegades. Nova is born into the Anarchists and her special power is putting people to sleep. Nova never sleeps at all. There is tension between the bad guy anarchists and the good guy Renegades and Nova is sent to infiltrate the Renegades to find inside scoop on their operations. She becomes friends with them and then they question their status and mission. The action between the two groups is great. I'm reading the sequel now, called Archnemesis and am on pins and needles waiting for the third installment coming out November 2019.

Lily A. from 7N:
I want to share Marie Lu's book called Legend. It is a dystopian book told in alternating chapters between a boy and a girl. The boy is a famous criminal and the girl is the first to get a perfect score on a test that all ten year olds take. She automatically becomes a soldier whose mission is to capture this criminal. While all this is going on, a plague has infected the world. Get this book!
