Lurgio News for January 26, 2018

LURGIO NEWS
January 26, 2018

Dear Students and Parents,

In these weekly notes I usually like to highlight the positive activities and great achievements of our students, but I have from time to time found it necessary to share information regarding the more risky behavior in which adolescents can sometimes engage. Such is the unfortunate case today, as this week I have heard a number of reports that some Lurgio students been experimenting with vaping.

Vaping is the relatively new phenomenon of inhaling the vapor released when liquid--often candy-flavored and nicotine-laced--is turned into gas using a “vape pen” or other device. One particularly problematic aspect of this habit is that while some dangers (like those inherent in any consumption of nicotine) are well understood, other long-term detriments of vaping are not fully known.

In response to this situation, and in an effort to help educate our community about vaping, our school resource officers, Bill “Spike” Donohue and Danielle Nightengale, teamed up with Dr. Joseph Hou to give a presentation in the BeBold Speaker Series (click here for the BCTV recording).

While the note this week may not be immediately uplifting, I hope that you find it helpful in talking with your teens about vaping.

Sincerely,

Ed

Last Day of School Update

We have had five school cancellations this year, so the current last day of school is Wednesday, June 20.

Book Buzz

This morning at Books for Breakfast, the students were really buzzing about these great books.

Calvin M. from 8 West:
I just finished Eragon by Christopher Paolini and it's great. I want to read the next one in the series. The antagonist chases Razak that killed his father putting into motion all the action scenes. Fifteen-year-old Eragon believes that he is merely a poor farm boy, until his destiny as a Dragon Rider is revealed. Gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a danger. If you like a fast paced action story, this is for you.

Students were also buzzing about Runaway's Gold by Hopkinton, NH author Emilie Burack who will be a signing books at Books for Breakfast later this year:
In Runaway's Gold, it is 1842, and Christopher Robertson’s family lives a difficult life as “crofters,” farmers and fishermen so in debt to the landowner that they have no hope of ever breaking free. To make matters worse, Christopher also lives under the thumb of his morally questionable father and devious brother. When his brother frames him for the theft of their father’s secret bag of coins, Christopher must leave his home and embark on a journey across the island to return the coins and clear his name. It’s a journey that takes twists and turns, including stops in prison, on a smuggler’s ship, and at the house of a beautiful girl—and it ends with him escaping to a new life in America, which has dangers of its own.
