Lurgio News for November 22, 2019

LURGIO NEWS
November 22, 2019

Dear Lurgio Families,

I want to wish you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday. As I look forward to this time with my family and friends, I also find myself reflecting on all the things that I am thankful for here at school. I feel grateful to be able to work with such an amazing staff and supportive families. I am especially thankful for the fantastic students who come to school each day eager to learn. Lurgio is truly an amazing school community.

The upcoming Thanksgiving break means that school will only be in session on Monday and Tuesday. Due to the abbreviated school week, there will be no Lurgio News next Friday. Please look for our next edition on December 6.

Have a wonderful break filled with good food, friends, and family!
Sincerely,
Ed Joyce

Book Buzz

Today’s Books for Breakfast theme was all about the animals!

Pax by Sara Pennypacker:

Pax and Peter have been inseparable ever since Peter rescued him as a kit. But one day, the unimaginable happens: Peter's dad enlists in the military and makes him return the fox to the wild. At his grandfather's house, three hundred miles away from home, Peter knows he isn't where he should be—with Pax. He strikes out on his own despite the encroaching war, spurred by love, loyalty, and grief, to be reunited with his fox.
Meanwhile Pax, steadfastly waiting for his boy, embarks on adventures and discoveries of his own...
The Good Good Pig by Sy Montgomery:

The Good Good Pig celebrates Christopher Hogwood in all his glory, from his inauspicious infancy to hog heaven in rural New Hampshire, where his boundless zest for life and his large, loving heart made him an absolute monarch over a (mostly) peaceable kingdom. At first, his domain included only Sy’s cosseted hens and her beautiful border collie, Tess. Then the neighbors began fetching Christopher home from his unauthorized jaunts, the little girls next door started giving him warm, soapy baths, and the villagers brought him delicious leftovers. His intelligence and fame increased along with his girth. He was featured in USA Today and on several National Public Radio environmental programs. On election day, some voters even wrote in Christopher’s name on their ballots.
Elephant in the Garden by Michael Morpurgo:

Lizzie and Karl's mother is a zoo keeper; the family has become attached to an orphaned elephant named Marlene, who will be destroyed as a precautionary measure so she and the other animals don't run wild should the zoo be hit by bombs. The family persuades the zoo director to let Marlene stay in their garden instead. When the city is bombed, the family flees with thousands of others, but how can they walk the same route when they have an elephant in tow, and keep themselves safe? Along the way, they meet Peter, a Canadian navigator who risks his own capture to save the family.
War Horse by Michael Morpurgo:

In 1914, Joey, a farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of World War I on the Western Front. When Joey is dragged away, his heart aches for Albert, the farmer's son he is forced to leave behind. In the army the beautiful red-bay horse is trained to charge the enemy, drag heavy artillery, and carry wounded soldiers not much older than Albert off the battlefields. Amongst the clamoring of guns, and while plodding through the cold mud, Joey wonders if the war will ever end. And if it does, will he ever find Albert again?

Lurgio News for November 15, 2019

LURGIO NEWS
November 15, 2019

Dear Lurgio Families,

This past Wednesday evening, Lurgio was filled with parents getting to know their student’s teachers and learning about their progress at school. I want to extend a huge thank you to all of our parents and PTG volunteers who put on a fantastic smorgasbord for our teachers to help keep their engergy during parent-teacher conferences. It’s truly heartwarming to see the tremendous support that our community has for the work that our teachers do.

Sincerely,

Ed Joyce

New News

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff reviews all nominees and selects the “Cub of the Week.”

We have two students this week who have truly stepped up for their classmates, making Lurgio a great place to learn.

This week’s Cub of the Week is Paul Shaughnessy. Paul helped a student in math who was having a hard time staying focused. He worked to make sure that his notes were complete and helped him on practice problems. Paul's compassion towards the other student did not go unnoticed!

This week’s Cub of the Week is Daphne McKenzie. Daphne often tutors other students, helps to organize their binders, or is exceptionally kind to her peers. She shows empathy beyond her years and has a way to make everyone she comes in contact with feel like they matter.

Thank you to Paul and Daphne for making Lurgio a great place to learn!

This fall, we celebrate 20 years of the Hannaford Helps Schools program! Since the program's inception, we've raised more than $12 million to help schools and kids reach their goals. We appreciate your continued partnership, and if you're new to the program – we welcome you!

Between 8/25 and 11/30, with the purchase of 4 participating Hannaford Helps Schools items, a customer will receive a printout for 3 School Dollars at the register. The customer can place that printout into your school's slot in the Hannaford Helps Schools collection tower which is located at the front of the store that your school is registered with.

Customers who shop with Hannaford To Go can give their School Dollar printouts to the associate handling their groceries and let them know which school slot to put them in.
This year, Hannaford will also donate $1,000 to the highest earning school per store.
NEW this year – your school may have a chance to earn DOUBLE School Dollars! The Hannaford store that has the highest increase of School Dollars turned in will DOUBLE the payouts to all its registered schools. Help your school earn double School Dollars by reminding parents to deposit their School Dollar printouts in the tower at the front of the store.

We talked about new books to our amazing library:

Jeff Kinney has a new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book! In Wrecking Ball, an unexpected inheritance gives Greg Heffley’s family a chance to make big changes to their house. But they soon find that home improvement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Holly Black's new book is Modern Faerie Tales. Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she travels from city to city with her mother’s rock band until an ominous attack forces Kaye back to her childhood home. There, amid the industrial, blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye soon finds herself as an unwilling pawn in an ancient power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms—a struggle that could very well mean her death.
Jake Burt's debut novel is Greetings from Witness Protection. The marshals are looking for the perfect girl to join a mother, father, and son on the run from the nation’s most notorious criminals. After all, the bad guys are searching for a family with one kid, not two, and adding a streetwise girl who knows a little something about hiding things may be just what the marshals need. Nicki swears she can keep the Trevor family safe, but to do so she’ll have to dodge hitmen, cyberbullies, and the specter of standardized testing, all while maintaining her marshal-mandated B-minus average. As she barely balances the responsibilities of her new identity, Nicki learns that the biggest threats to her family’s security might not lurk on the road from New York to North Carolina, but rather in her own past.
