Lurgio News for November 22, 2019

LURGIO NEWS
November 22, 2019

Dear Lurgio Families,

I want to wish you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday. As I look forward to this time with my family and friends, I also find myself reflecting on all the things that I am thankful for here at school. I feel grateful to be able to work with such an amazing staff and supportive families. I am especially thankful for the fantastic students who come to school each day eager to learn. Lurgio is truly an amazing school community.

The upcoming Thanksgiving break means that school will only be in session on Monday and Tuesday. Due to the abbreviated school week, there will be no Lurgio News next Friday. Please look for our next edition on December 6.

Have a wonderful break filled with good food, friends, and family!
Sincerely,
Ed Joyce

Book Buzz

Today’s Books for Breakfast theme was all about the animals!

Pax by Sara Pennypacker:

Pax and Peter have been inseparable ever since Peter rescued him as a kit. But one day, the unimaginable happens: Peter's dad enlists in the military and makes him return the fox to the wild. At his grandfather's house, three hundred miles away from home, Peter knows he isn't where he should be—with Pax. He strikes out on his own despite the encroaching war, spurred by love, loyalty, and grief, to be reunited with his fox.
Meanwhile Pax, steadfastly waiting for his boy, embarks on adventures and discoveries of his own...
The Good Good Pig by Sy Montgomery:

The Good Good Pig celebrates Christopher Hogwood in all his glory, from his inauspicious infancy to hog heaven in rural New Hampshire, where his boundless zest for life and his large, loving heart made him an absolute monarch over a (mostly) peaceable kingdom. At first, his domain included only Sy’s cosseted hens and her beautiful border collie, Tess. Then the neighbors began fetching Christopher home from his unauthorized jaunts, the little girls next door started giving him warm, soapy baths, and the villagers brought him delicious leftovers. His intelligence and fame increased along with his girth. He was featured in USA Today and on several National Public Radio environmental programs. On election day, some voters even wrote in Christopher’s name on their ballots.
Elephant in the Garden by Michael Morpurgo:

Lizzie and Karl's mother is a zoo keeper; the family has become attached to an orphaned elephant named Marlene, who will be destroyed as a precautionary measure so she and the other animals don't run wild should the zoo be hit by bombs. The family persuades the zoo director to let Marlene stay in their garden instead. When the city is bombed, the family flees with thousands of others, but how can they walk the same route when they have an elephant in tow, and keep themselves safe? Along the way, they meet Peter, a Canadian navigator who risks his own capture to save the family.
War Horse by Michael Morpurgo:

In 1914, Joey, a farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of World War I on the Western Front. When Joey is dragged away, his heart aches for Albert, the farmer's son he is forced to leave behind. In the army the beautiful red-bay horse is trained to charge the enemy, drag heavy artillery, and carry wounded soldiers not much older than Albert off the battlefields. Amongst the clamoring of guns, and while plodding through the cold mud, Joey wonders if the war will ever end. And if it does, will he ever find Albert again?
