December 21, 2018

Dear Lurgio Community,

Today Lurgio students, staff, parents and community members collected, organized, and delivered thirty-seven food baskets.  Each basket was chockablock with all the ingredients to make a great meal. Kudos to Mrs. Fairhurst, Ms. Mazzola, and the Lurgio Student Council for spearheading and organizing this wonderful donation to our community. In spite of the weather, it is a shining day for Lurgio. Everyone who helped should be very proud of their contribution.

Book Buzz

We had a fantastic Books for Breakfast Book Swap today, and everyone left happy with their new books traded and received. The book traded the most was JK Rowling's The Crimes of Grindelwald:

At the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured in New York with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escapes custody and sets about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists Newt, his former Hogwarts student, who agrees to help once again, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Lurgio News for December 14, 2018

LURGIO NEWS
December 14, 2018

Dear Lurgio Community,

Last night our Lurgio Chorus and Band were spectacular as they performed for the Winter Concert.  Congratulations to our musicians, directors, parents, and everyone that helped make the event a wonderful success. While the arts took center stage last night, our basketball teams have some great games coming up next week. Our teams will be hosting home games on Monday and Thursday. Be sure to catch the excitement.

In the spirit of giving, our Student Council is making their final push on the Holiday Food Basket Drive. Homerooms are collecting 30 of their designated item (homeroom items list), and collecting between $2-$3 per student to help defray costs of turkeys, milk, eggs, and other items.  We are hoping to have all donations in by Thursday, Dec 21. In past years, this effort has helped to provide a holiday meal for 30+ families in our local community.

Thank you for your support,

This week’s Cubs of the Week are Lauren Redfern and Kaylie Tennant. They are being honored this week for enhancing of their reading block.  With the blessing of their homeroom teacher, Lauren and Kaylie created a book group for their sustained reading block. The two girls researched possible novels, wrote summaries of the possible books, organized a class vote, and set up the structure for the book club.  Ms. Turmelle reports that it has been a phenomenal success. Way to go Lauren and Kaylie. Thank you for making Lurgio a wonderful place to learn.

8th Grader to support WZID’s Radiothon

Every year, for two days, the 95.7 WZID radio station has the “Christmas is for Kids Radiothon”. During this Radiothon donations are collected so the kids in New Hampshire who are less fortunate can open presents during the holidays. Faith Guttman, Lurgio 8th Grader, and her entire family are championing this effort here in our Bedford schools. Faith will be setting up a collection box in the Lurgio Main Office this Monday. If you wish to donate, we are accepting coins, cash, and checks. Checks are to be made out to WAYPOINT (formerly Child and Family Services). If you need a tax deduction receipt or would like to donate using a credit card, please reach out to Helena Guttman, BSN, RN, WAYPOINT’s program nurse, at (603) 722-3148. If our school generates enough money, the Lurgio Middle School will be thanked live on the radio! Collections will run through the seventh of December.

Book Buzz

Books for Breakfast is gearing up for its annual Book Swap. All are invited to our December 21st Book Swap. Bring a new or gently used wrapped book and join the fun.

Lily from 7N is buzzing about James Patterson’s Maximum Ride:
This is a great story full of suspense and really fast paced with short chapters. Kids are genetically engineered in a lab and they have wings in their shoulder blades and they can fly. These 6 kids are not related but they are family. Then Angel is kidnapped by the rival gang, the Erasers, and the kids have to get her back. There are nine books in the series and I'm on number nine! So good!
