Lurgio News for September 28, 2018

LURGIO NEWS
September 28, 2018

Dear Parents,

With September all but in the books, it is now time to start getting excited about October. Along with some much needed cooler weather, October also brings Cardigan for our 8th graders and the Witch Way Fun Run for everyone. This year we have ramped of the fun for our annual fundraiser by making the distance more manageable for all students and adding Trick-or-treat stations along the course. We are also going to host a series of fun activities for our students at lunches and even a few evening events to build excitement and spirit. You can learn more about the race by reading our feature that is included below in the New News section.

All the best,

Ed Joyce
Principal

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.”

This week’s Cub is Sam McGovern from pod 7-East. Sam is being recognized for being particularly supportive of his classmates as they are all settling into their Lurgio. Congratulations, Sam! You make Lurgio a great place to learn!

Witch Way Fun Run

Fall is here and the planning for annual Witch Way race is well under way.  We have made some major changes to this annual event! One of those exciting changes is the race has been renamed to the Witch Way Fun Run.  This run will be on a new shorter 2 mile course (course map here) that will include a variety of Halloween-themed pit-stops stocked with candy and prizes along the way.  We will no longer formally be timing the race but we will have a clock available at the start/finish line for those of you who are interested in their time.

The race will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2018 and starts at 10am at Lurgio Middle School.  Click here for more information: http://www.sau25.net/ww5k.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Donna Dennis - dennisd@sau25.net.

NHSAS Scores Update

Apologies for the inconvenience but we inadvertently did not send home student scores on the Math portion of the NHSAS last week.  Those have been sent out this week and should arrive at your homes shortly.

Book Buzz

We have a ton of kids buzzing about Donna Gephart’s Lily and Dunkin. You know it's a good book when all the library copies go out and there is a 6 person hold on it! This book is clearly not to be missed.

Lily Jo McGrother, born Timothy McGrother, is a girl. But being a girl is not so easy when you look like a boy. Especially when you’re in the eighth grade. Dunkin Dorfman, birth name Norbert Dorfman, is dealing with bipolar disorder and has just moved from the New Jersey town he’s called home for the past thirteen years. This would be hard enough, but the fact that he is also hiding from a painful secret makes it even worse. One summer morning, Lily Jo McGrother meets Dunkin Dorfman, and their lives forever change.

Athletics This Week

Please click here to view the schedule for the upcoming week. There are limited competitions and most practices are optional for 8th graders due to the Cardigan trip. See individual sport coaches for further details about practices. Regular schedules will resume on October 9th.

BHS/RAL Equestrian Club

The New Hampshire High School Equestrian Teams (NHHSET) organization as stated on their website (https://www.nhhset.org/) is "dedicated to promoting and organizing equestrian competition in high school athletic or activity programs. NHHSET will support, challenge and offer recognition to the dedicated students who both physically and mentally pursue the challenge of the equine sport."  Bedford High School has competed with a High School Equestrian Club for many years. The state has opened up the registration to middle school students again this year. The Bedford High School and Ross A Lurgio Middle School are once again teaming up to offer the opportunity for student equestrians to compete in NHHSET for the 2018-2019 school year.

The competition is comprised of three meets at the district level in the spring and culminates in the State Championship in May.  Students of all riding levels are able to compete in all disciplines. Students compete individually and accumulate points toward a team final placement.  Students are able to register as a rider or a spirit member. Riders must own or lease a horse in order to compete. Spirit members participate by working with the riding members to prepare horses for competition as well as "The Grooming Box Challenge" and a Practicum Experience.  Participants will practice with the team coach in the winter on patterns as determined by the state board. The meets are run by parent volunteers and as such parents are required to volunteer at least one Saturday meet in the spring. Rider and Spirit registration begins December 1, 2018.  Cost for Rider participation was $175 and Spirit participation was $20 last year. The cost structure is still being finalized at the state level.

Kathy Blake (blakek@sau25.net) is the club advisor. Please contact Kathy Blake for further information.  Registration will close at the beginning of January. All documents and money orders must go through Kathy Blake in order to be part of the Bedford High School Club Team.
The club will begin meeting in early October.  There will be a parent meeting to answer questions in early October as well.

Reminders

Traffic Reminders

Traffic at dismissal continues to improve, and we would like to thank all parents for following safe driving practices even in the frustration of our most high-traffic times. Today was our most efficient dismissal, with all buses making it up the hill prior to the final bell of the day!

As a reminder, please continue to follow these practices any time you are driving on campus:

  1. Refrain from cell phone use, even when idling.
  2. Load and unload only in the designated area marked by the double green areas.
  3. Pull all the way forward in both lanes of the pick-up/drop-off area.
  4. Mind the speed limit on campus (15 MPH), and remember that slower is better when student pedestrians are present.
  5. Reserve the use of the traffic circle for students with mobility issues (wheelchair, crutches, etc...)
  6. Feel free to smile and wave at your friendly outdoor duty teachers!
By continuing to follow these guidelines, we can continue to see improved traffic flow and increasingly efficient dismissals.

Lurgio News for September 21, 2018

LURGIO NEWS
September 21, 2018

Dear Parents,

We’ve made it through the first full week of school! While it’s nice to have some shorter weeks to on-ramp into the school year, it’s even nicer to see everything in full swing. Our co-curricular clubs and athletic teams are fully up-and-running, and it’s wonderful to see so many students so deeply engaged in our school community.

Here’s to another great week next week. And then, on to Cardigan!

All the best,

Books For Breakfast Has Launched
Lurgio’s Books for Breakfast Cafe had a very successful first meeting in the Media Center this morning before school! This is just a reminder that all students and staff are welcome each Friday morning at 8:00am on a drop-in basis. Come meet other people who are wild about books! We always have free breakfast snacks, share our favorite authors and series, and look at author websites and new book trailers. Please join us when it is convenient! And take a look at our first Book Buzz in the Weekly Feature section below.

Introducing New Weekly Feature for Athletics
Starting this week, we are introducing a new weekly feature for athletics. This is a live link to the following week’s athletic practice and events schedule. While we have always pushed this information out to coaches and athletes, we want to make it is more widely available to the broader community who may be interested in attending games and events.

Weekly Features

Book Buzz
Every Friday morning our Books for Breakfast crew gets together in the media center to share their appetite for reading. Each week, we hear kids simply “buzzing” about the books they’re reading.

This week, our 8th graders were buzzing about Cardigan more than anything, so we are sharing Meika Hashimoto's book The Trail:

This is an action-packed, survival tale set in the wilderness of hiking the Appalachian Trail alone. Toby and Lucas planned this adventure together, but now Lucas is not with him. They had a list of ten brave events to complete, and now Toby is completing the last of the list alone, coping with gear, weather, and food while hiking the last 400 miles of the AT in Maine. Good thing 8th graders go to Cardigan with 200 friends and not alone!

Athletics This Week
Please click here to view the practice and game schedule for the week of September 24. Home game highlights include two girls’ soccer games, two field hockey games, one boys’ soccer game, and a home cross-country meet!
