LURGIO NEWS
March 30, 2018

Dear Parents,

Last evening our students were the stars of the show as the Lurgio Band and Chorus gave a spectacular performance in celebration of the Music in our School Month of March. Kudos to our student musicians, and their wonderful directors, Ms. Beland, Mrs. Devino, and Ms. Mattson. I would also like to thank the wonderful parent volunteers and BHS students that greeted our audience and served concessions.  All in all, it was great night.

Midnight Madness April 6

We would like to invite all students to our annual Midnight Madness indoor extravaganza. Each year we convert our full BHS/RAL gymnasium into a massive indoor playground with inflatable obstacle courses, a mechanical bull, and much, much more. The cost is $20, which includes a $5 snack card. Additional snack cards can be purchased for $5 each. Pizza, cotton candy, snow cones, water and popcorn will be available for purchase. We will also be showing movies in our dining hall.
Finally, we are partnering with the PTG to get parent volunteers for this event. Here is the link to the SignUp Genius. If you can help for part or all of the night, which runs 7:00 PM to midnight, we can use all the support we can get.

TSA Spring Conference

On March 22 and 23, 15 Lurgio students attended the Technology Student Association State Spring Conference in Bartlett, NH.  Students competed in a variety of events such as: Leadership Strategies, Structural Engineering, Flight, Promotional Marketing, Dragster Design, Junior Solar Sprint, and many other events.  The Lurgio students did extremely well, garnishing 3 first place trophies, 2 second place trophies, and 1 third place trophy. The eighth graders hope to continue TSA at Bedford High School; and Ashvita Girish was elected as our State Reporter and will serve as a State Officer for the 2018-2019 school year. Congratulations to all!

2018-19 School Calendar

The School Board has approved the 2018-19 School Calendar. Please note that there is a substantial change for 2018-19. The district will shift from tracking days to tracking hours. As a result, the last day of school for 2018-19 will be no later than June 13 and could be as early as June 6. The first five snow days, if needed, will be made up by students at the end of the year. Any snow days beyond five days will not need to be made up by students. This should bring some more predictability to the end of the year for families.

Screenagers - Wednesday April 4 at 6 PM

In case you missed it or want to bring your spouse or friend, there will be another screening of Screenagers this Wednesday, April 4th at 6 PM in the St. Elizabeth’s gymnasium. This event will be hosted by the McKelvie guidance team, and they look forward to seeing many community members there.

Book Buzz

With opening day this week, everyone is buzzing about baseball. Get your hands on these two great books and play ball!

Tim Green and Derek Jeter co-wrote wrote The Baseball Genius

This is a story about a boy whose bad idea gets him in trouble. But there is a twist!

Jalen DeLuca loves baseball. Unfortunately his dad can’t afford to keep him on the travel team. His dad runs a diner and makes enough to cover the bills, but there isn’t enough to cover any extras. So Jalen decides to take matters into his own hands and he sneaks into the home of the New York Yankee’s star second baseman, James Yager, and steals a couple of balls from his personal batting cage. He knows that if he can sell them, he’ll be able to keep himself on the team.

But like the best-laid plans—or in this case the worst!—Jalen’s scheme goes wrong when Yager catches him. But Jalen has a secret: his baseball genius. He can analyze and predict almost exactly what a pitcher is going to do with his next pitch. He can’t quite explain how he knows, he just knows. And after proving to Yager that he really can do this, using a televised game and predicting pitch after pitch with perfect accuracy, the two agree to a deal. Jalen will help Yager out of his batting slump and Yager won’t press charges. However, when he begins to suspect that the team’s general manager has his own agenda, Jalen’s going to need his friends and his unusual baseball talent to save not only Yager’s career, but his own good name.

Tim Green's book Force Out is about two competitive best friends:
Joey and Zach have always been best friends. They’re also two of the best baseball players in their league, and shoo-ins for the all-star team at the end of the season. Their dream is to play together on the Center State select team, and they will do anything to help each other get there.

So when Zach is forced to go on an extra-credit field trip that would make him miss the championship game and his chances to move on, Joey comes up with a risky plan to bail him out. Everything should be fine—as long as no one finds out what they did. Then the unthinkable happens: The boys learn there’s only one open spot on the select team. Suddenly Joey and Zach go from being best friends to biggest rivals, and Joey has to decide his next move. He can play the biggest game of his life, or he can use their secret to force Zach out. How far should Joey go to win?Try Tim Green's book Force Out is about two competitive best friends:

Last Day of School now June 20

The Superintendent announced at Monday's Board Meeting that the last day of school for students is currently June 20. He had a conversation with the NHDOE about the two days we missed school due to the Halloween wind storm this year. Given the circumstances of the storm and our school calendar, we will not have to have students make up those two days at the end of the year.
