Cub of the Week

Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the “Cub of the Week.”

This week’s Cubs of the Week are Limenwa Kennedy and Gwyneth Meijer.  Limenwa and Gwyneth are known by teachers and students alike for being kind, empathetic, and responsible. They are being honored as our cubs for going out of their way to be super helpful to their teachers and classmates.  Congratulations Limenwa and Gwyneth. Thank you for your consistently positive contributions to our learning community.

Registration Now Open for You Be The Chemist Challenge

Lurgio students have the opportunity to participate in the "You Be the Chemist" (YBTC) Challenge, organized by the Chemical Educational Foundation. The YBTC Challenge is a fun and interactive academic competition that engages students in learning about important chemistry concepts, scientific discoveries, and laboratory safety.

To qualify for the state competition, students will take a 25-multiple-choice qualifying exam on Tuesday, March 5th at 2:30 in the media center.  The top students from Lurgio will advance to the state competition on April 6 at Bishop Guertin High School.  The top student from the state will win an expenses-paid trip to the National Challenge in Washington D.C. in June.

If your child is interested in participating, please fill out this Google Form to register.  Registration deadline is Friday, February 8th. If you have any questions, email Mrs. Rockwell at rockwella@bedfordnhk12.net.

To prepare for the exam, CEF recommends students explore all of the study materials at ChemEd, as well as other outside chemistry resources.

Guidance Corner

Here is a link to the Asset Newsletter titled “Positive Peer Influences”.  For the past two weeks the members of Students Against Destructive Decisions have teamed up with members of the Lurgio Girls and Boys Basketball teams, creating the message Slam Dunk, Drugs are Junk.” The collaboration has provided both groups with an opportunity to further explore ways they can support and provide leadership while addressing alcohol and other drug prevention in our school.

Book Buzz

Whole School Read Author Gordon Korman has a new book out! It is called The Unteachables, and we were buzzing about it at Books for Breakfast this morning:

This book has several points of view by chapters. Students are in a special class because they have not passed the curriculum to attend high school and their teacher has to get them caught up. It opens with the students roasting marshmallows on pencils in the trash can. Find out what happens when the worst kids are paired with the worst teacher. Check out his new book and his website for a short story contest.

As quarter 2 comes to a close, we are happy to report that 62% of our students did not need to borrow a daily loaner at all this quarter!  With the new quarter comes a clean loaner slate for all students. This quarter when we email parents that their child has borrowed a Chromebook for the third time, we will also include a copy of your child’s plan.  We ask that you review the plan with your child to help them stick to it. As always, please continue to remind your child to charge their Chromebook every night and to bring it to school every dayl!
