Lurgio News for April 22, 2016

LURGIO NEWS
April 22, 2016

Dear Parents,

Happy vacation! I wish all Lurgio families a fun and restful break--one last breather before the final sprint. As we head into the home stretch of the 15/16 school year, I am constantly reminded of why Bedford is such a fantastic district. Our students come prepared every day for the academic challenges that they face. Whether it’s the Smarter Balanced assessments or our own rigorous curriculum, the students you send us each day are up to the work.

Enjoy the break.

Sincerely,

Ed Joyce

The Stand By Me Committee is in need of your help on the day of the big event.  If you are able to give of your time, even if it is just for a part of the day, please visit our signup at:
or contact Kim Kearns, Volunteer Coordinator, at kimkearns@me.com. Thank you!
The Stand By Me Committee would like to congratulate POD 7 North, the winners of the brochure contest. RAL Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.” The Cub will be announced in the Lurgio News.

This week’s Cub of the Week is Shannon Luby. Her teachers describe her as a thoughtful student willing to go out of her way to help her fellow classmates.  For example, Shannon took the time to create a WWII study test and share it with her podmates to reduce their stress level and also help them do well on their test.
Lurgio Wins Second Straight Sportsmanship Award
For the second year in a row, the Lurgio Middle School Athletic Program won the Tri-County League Division I Sportsmanship Award. This award is voted on by the coaches and athletic directors of the other schools Lurgio competes against. This honor is a strong testament to the hard work and dedication of all coaches and athletes. Congratulations to all!

Gabe Shupe, Miles Bruno, Ethan Cline, Dan Dong, Conor Langan, Sarah Avampato, Jamie Karr, and Caleb Richmond made up the Lurgio contingent, the largest from a single school.
Six of the Lurgio competitors earned enough points to be invited to the finals in Chicago in June: Caleb Richmond, Jamie Karr, Sarah Avampato, Conor Langan, Ethan Cline and Dan Dong.

Congratulations to all our students who took part in this very challenging competition.

Project Purple
The week we return from April vacation, Bedford High School will be celebrating the Project Purple Initiative with Chris Herren.  Chris will be presenting to the sophomores and juniors. As a former NBA player, Chris enjoys a following of sports fans and is recognized for his battle against addiction in many forums, including ESPN.    When Chris visited BHS last year he spoke to juniors and seniors, focussing on the issues that lead youth to begin a journey with alcohol and other drugs.   He highlights the ways in which children, pre-teens and teens can build the resiliency, strategies and tools necessary to walk away from destructive decisions including self harm and substance misuse.   Many of these strategies are covered here, each week as we explore together building ASSETS with Bedford youth.
We will also have a dry/canned food drive for Amber's Place Recovery Center.
Click here for the Project Purple Initiative website.  We hope you’ll share this initiative with your middle schooler!

Spotlight on Special Education in Bedford
Are you the parent or guardian of a child who accesses special education services in Bedford?  Join us for an informational session to learn about special education services in our Bedford schools!  Meet representatives and gain insight into the different programming at each school through this panel presentation. Tuesday April 19th, 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the SAU Board Room, 103 County Road.  RSVP to Robin Palis palisr@sau25.net or 472-3755 (option 2).

Community-Wide Substance Abuse Discussion on Sunday April 10
You are invited to an important event entitled "It’s Time to Break the Silence!"  This community-wide discussion will be held at the Bedford Presbyterian Church on Sunday, April 10 from 6:30-8:00 PM. This is an opportunity to discuss drug and alcohol abuse and share ways to address these serious challenges.  Parents, teens, and youth from 4th to 12th grade are invited.  For more info contact John Sawyer at jsawyer@bedfordpresbyterian.org or 603-472-5841.

Bedford Schools Water Supply
Concerns about the water supply have been in the news recently.  We want to make sure everyone on our community knows that none of the water supplying the Bedford Schools comes from the Merrimack Village Water District. Manchester Water Works supplies Peter Woodbury and Memorial. Pennichuck Water Works supplies McKelvie, Lurgio, Bedford High School, and Riddle Brook through a Manchester water source.

PTG Corner:
A BIG thank you to all those who volunteered to make our Midnight Madness event a great success!  I know that fun was had by all (even those who volunteered)!  We could not have done it without your help!

Til next year!
