Lurgio News for January 29, 2021

LURGIO NEWS

January 29, 2021

Dear Lurgio Families,

Superintendent Fournier issued an update today regarding the Bedford School District’s plan for reopening. Given that we are on a trajectory to begin bringing all hybrid students into the building on Friday, February 12, I thought it would be important to share with you the changes that students will likely see in the coming weeks.

There is a more thorough outline in the first New News item below, but the bottom line is that the biggest change will be that our six-foot distancing mitigation measure will be reduced to three feet. If the data remains GREEN when the district metrics team meets on Wednesday, February, 3, the three-foot standard will begin for all lunches on Monday, February 8. This is because the classroom desks that are currently serving as individual lunch tables for students will need to be returned to classrooms to prepare for full attendance on Friday. Students will eat lunch with a maximum of four students per lunch table.

We will continue to maintain six feet of distance during classes and in hallways Mondays through Thursdays, and we will reduce that distance to three feet at all times when all hybrid students are present on Fridays. We will continue to follow guidance from DHHS regarding positive cases, contact tracing, and quarantine. Because this guidance maintains six feet of distance as the standard for contact tracing, there is an increased risk that more students will need to quarantine based on close contact during lunches or on Fridays.

We will continue to enforce strict mask-wearing measures in order to attempt to mitigate the spread of any potential contagion. If all goes well during this period of full-attendance on Fridays, we can expect further reopening of schools in the coming months. I sincerely hope that we are at the beginning of a return to increased normalcy.

My best,

Ed Joyce

New News

Lurgio Phase 2 Reopening

Below is a short summary of the changes that will take place during Phase 2 and beyond:

  • Physical distancing will be reduced to three feet in hallways and classrooms on Fridays.

  • Physical distancing in the dining hall will be three feet every school day Monday through Friday.

  • Distance learning will no longer occur on Fridays when all hybrid students are present in the school building.

  • Fully remote students will still receive remote classes on Fridays.

  • We will not be able to accommodate changing modes of instruction (Hybrid to Remote or Remote to Hybrid) during Phase 2 and beyond.

  • From Monday through Thursday, school will operate on an alternating schedule in order to accommodate approximately 50% capacity with six-foot distancing in classes and hallways and three-foot distancing at lunches.

  • On Fridays, school will operate at roughly 80% in-person capacity, with the remaining 20% of students enrolled in the fully remote option.

  • All hybrid students, regardless of last name, are expected to attend in-person on Fridays.

  • Students will sit four to a table at our circular dining hall tables with installed plexiglass dividers, which provides three feet of space between students during lunches.

  • All students are permitted to utilize bus transportation, but it is possible that some families may make alternate plans so that the number of bus riders is reduced.

  • Students will spread out among seats on the bus as much as possible in order to encourage physical distancing.

Lurgio Goes Tubing at McIntyre

Looking for some outdoor fun? RAL students have the opportunity to go tubing at McIntyre Ski Area on Saturday 2/13, from 9-11 am. Forms and money are due back to homeroom teachers (or to the office) by 2/5 if you want to attend. There are a limited number of spots available. Click HERE for information and waivers.

BHS Course Registration

The BHS course registration portal will open 8th graders and their parents on February 2nd and close on February 15th. There is no first come, first served order; no one gets priority based on when they put information into the portal. Take your time. Make changes right up until February 15 if you need to. The registration portal is contained within PowerSchool. Please watch this video to see how it works. The Course Selection Information Night and this Program of Studies link are also useful tools when registering for classes.

In an effort to identify ways in which our students can engage in educational extension activities during the distance learning days, we have partnered with the Joppa Hill Educational Farm to offer some outdoor learning opportunities this winter. This is also a way for students to get in some social time with their peers while practicing safe social distancing.

The next sessions offered will be February 10-11; more information on those will come out in next week's Lurgio News.

Any Lurgio student (remote or hybrid) is welcome to join.

Concurrent Learning

The Bedford School District continues to adapt our practices to support the needs of learners. As you are aware, the state of New Hampshire has seen increased positive COVID-19 cases. As a result we have had more students who have been required to quarantine and are unable to attend school in person. To support these students, our K-8 schools will offer synchronous opportunities for students to connect with their teachers. For some, this will be in the form of concurrent learning.

Concurrent learning occurs when students who are receiving instruction in the classroom are joined by their peers who are in a virtual setting. This is more difficult for the teacher to navigate; however, they have been offered training opportunities in order to assist quarantined students who would otherwise not have direct access to their teachers while at home. Please find the expectations for students and parents in THIS document.

Feel free to contact your building leaders and teachers with any questions.

Indoor Athletic Events

Home basketball games are not open to spectators during the 2020-2021 season, with the exception of (2) household family members from each player. Families will sit socially distanced on the bleachers, 6 feet apart, and masks should be worn at all times.

Students, staff, and athletes who are members of other teams (including basketball) are not permitted to attend games. A staff member will be at the door checking in spectators no earlier than 15 minutes before the start of the game. Spectators are asked to leave immediately after the game, especially when there is another game afterwards.

There will be no spectators permitted at any away games this season.

Specific information was sent out to basketball families regarding all of our modifications this season.

Book Buzz

We discussed strategies for keeping stress free now that we are nearing a year into the pandemic with Whitney Stewart's book Mindfulness and Meditation

From hormones to homework, parents to peers, health issues to bad habits, life can be a pressure cooker leading to anxiety and even thoughts of suicide. How can we find relief? Author Whitney Stewart introduces readers to the practice of mindfulness. With its roots in ancient Buddhist teachings, mindfulness―the practice of purposefully focusing attention on the present moment―can change a person's approach to stress, develop skills to handle anxiety and depression, and provide a sense of awareness and belonging. Stewart guides readers through how to get started with meditation as well as provides specific exercises for examining emotions, managing stress, checking social media habits and wellness routines, and setting intentions to increase happiness.

Gary Paulsen has a new book called Gone to the Woods and it is a memoir.

His name is synonymous with high-stakes wilderness survival stories. Now, beloved author Gary Paulsen portrays a series of life-altering moments from his turbulent childhood as his own original survival story. If not for his summer escape from a shockingly neglectful Chicago upbringing to a North Woods homestead at age five, there never would have been a Hatchet. Without the encouragement of the librarian who handed him his first book at age thirteen, he may never have become a reader. And without his desperate teenage enlistment in the Army, he would not have discovered his true calling as a storyteller. A moving and enthralling story of grit and growing up, Gone to the Woods is perfect for newcomers to the voice and lifelong fans alike, from the acclaimed author at his rawest and realest.

Gary Schmidt has a new book called Just Like That.

In this poignant, perceptive, witty novel, Gary D. Schmidt brings authenticity and emotion to multiple plot strands, weaving in themes of grief, loss, redemption, achievement, and love. Following the death of her closest friend in summer 1968, Meryl Lee Kowalski goes off to St. Elene's Preparatory Academy for Girls, where she struggles to navigate the venerable boarding school's traditions and a social structure heavily weighted toward students from wealthy backgrounds. In a parallel story, Matt Coffin has wound up on the Maine coast near St. Elene's with a pillowcase full of money lifted from the leader of a criminal gang, fearing the gang's relentless, destructive pursuit. Both young people gradually dispel their loneliness, finding a way to be hopeful and also finding each other.

Alan Gratz has a new novel called Ground Zero

In time for the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, master storyteller Alan Gratz (Refugee) delivers a pulse-pounding and unforgettable take on history and hope, revenge and fear -- and the stunning links between the past and present. September 11, 2001, New York City: Brandon is visiting his dad at work, on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center. Out of nowhere, an airplane slams into the tower, creating a fiery nightmare of terror and confusion. And Brandon is in the middle of it all. Can he survive -- and escape?September 11, 2019, Afghanistan: Reshmina has grown up in the shadow of war, but she dreams of peace and progress. When a battle erupts in her village, Reshmina stumbles upon a wounded American soldier named Taz. Should she help Taz -- and put herself and her family in mortal danger?

Two kids. One devastating day. Nothing will ever be the same.
