Lurgio News for January 18, 2019

LURGIO NEWS
January 18, 2019

Dear Lurgio Community,

This week a parent reached out to me with a great question about limiting screen time before bed for his teenager. With the increasing ubiquity of screens, questions about how to unplug from our online lives and plug into the real world all around us are becoming more common. This parent reached out to me for guidance about this important issue, and who better to answer the call than our Lurgio guidance team. Please check out some common sense suggestions they’ve pulled together in our Guidance Corner.

All my best,

Ed

New News
Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cub of the Week is Katie Murray. Katie is known as a kind, inclusive, and conscientious student.  She is being honored this week for her willingness to go above and beyond the call to make other students feel a part of Lurgio.  Congratulations Katie. Thank you for helping to make Lurgio a place where everyone feels like they belong here.

New Main Entrance

A new main entrance door was installed at Lurgio over the holiday break. Now, when you come to visit us, you will enter the main office directly from the main entrance foyer. This is stage one of a two-part renovation to improve the security of our entrance.

Fueled by Kids Food Drive

This year, Lurgio will again be helping Fueled by Kids to put together food items for students in need over February vacation. Lurgio is collecting jars of peanut butter (26 oz) and boxes of graham crackers (info flyer). This is a homeroom competition, and the homeroom in each grade that brings in the most items will earn a pizza party. Collections will run until February 19th. If you have any questions, please see Dr. Fairhurst, Ms. Mazzola or Kate Mikol.

RAL Kitchen News

The breakfast program will be featuring a delicious and nutritious tropical orange smoothie. It’s loaded with vitamin C, the powerful antioxidant beta carotene and probiotics. This smoothie will help boost the immune system, provide some healthy gut bacteria, nourish the skin and promote good eye health. In addition to breakfast combo meals, the kitchen will be offering a homemade banana streusel muffin. This lovely, healthy treat will keep you feeling satisfied with lots of long-lasting energy and a boost of potassium to help with muscle strength and reduce stress and anxiety. Start the school day off with a bang and don't miss out on these healthy, wholesome new breakfast items.

The hot lunch program is featuring an exciting new meal on Thursday, January 24nd! The kitchen will be showcasing a French toast bar with whole grain French toast sticks. Your choice of toppings will include fresh berries, walnuts, dried fruit and real local maple syrup from Ben’s Sugar Shack in Temple, NH. Pairing with the french toast will be hashbrowns, a sausage patty, and a green monster smoothie made in house and filled with fresh fruits and vegetables! This tasty meal is too good to pass up. Come down to the cafe and try it out!

Guidance Corner

A lot of parents contact Lurgio staff for guidance related to limiting screen time for their children. At Lurgio we often refer to Common Sense Media as a valuable resource. Here is a link to some of the Common Sense Media resources.  In 2017, Hannah Guillemette (then an 8th grade student), founder of “I’ve Got Your Back,” sponsored a showing of “Screenagers”. This presentation served to validate our great impression of Common Sense Media. Please check out this quick video:  3 Easy Ways Parents Can Tame Their Device Use

FPTS Helps Local Young Athletes at Lurgio Middle School

For the past several years Family Physical Therapy Services has committed itself to helping our local young athletes at Ross A. Lurgio Middle School in Bedford, NH stay safe as well as improve athletic performance. Our very own Director of Athletic Performance, James Goodwin, took on a slightly different role this year to focus more on preventive strategies to reducing the risk of injury. He attends weekly training sessions for in-season sports to address any current injuries as well as administer functional dynamic warm-ups and injury prevention training. We are happy to say that majority of the teams at Lurgio reported little to no injuries this Fall 2018 season, and in fact, the Boys and Girls Soccer teams as well as the Girls Field Hockey team made it to the Championship! Their hard work and dedication to their coaches and their movement quality helped them reach such achievements. FPTS also offers an Athletic Performance Program for those interested in learning how to move better and recover quicker. Visit the RAL Athletics Website for further inquiry. James and FPTS will continue their efforts educating these young athletes throughout the year on reducing injuries and improving athletic performance.

Lurgio Tech Corner

As quarter 2 comes to a close, we are happy to report that 62% of our students did not need to borrow a daily loaner at all this quarter!  With the new quarter comes a clean loaner slate for all students. This quarter when we email parents that their child has borrowed a Chromebook for the third time, we will also include a copy of your child’s plan.  We ask that you review the plan with your child to help them stick to it. As always, please continue to remind your child to charge their Chromebook every night and to bring it to school every dayl!
