Dear Parents,
On Thursday, we hosted our annual Grandparents’ Day, and we had over 140 grandparents and senior citizens attend for a delicious lunch and a sneak preview of our Lurgio Players annual musical performance. It’s always a pleasure when we can invite members of our community into Lurgio and showcase students’ talent. Thank you to our Grandparent’s Day Coordinator, Elise Johnson, and our team of PTG volunteers that made the day a wonderful success.
This weekend, those Lurgio Players will present High School Musical. This fun filled musical drama is sure to entertain the whole family. Shows will be Friday, March 16 at 7:00 PM and Saturday, March 17 at both 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM in the BHS Theater. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for students, and can be purchased at the door or online at http://www.seatyourself.biz/

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cub is Kiera Gardiner. Kiera is great student at Lurgio who is known for her kindness and empathy. Specifically, she has gone out of her way to help a friend on crutches navigate the busy middle school. Congratulations Kiera! Thanks for helping make Lurgio a wonderful place to be.

Last Day of School now June 20
The Superintendent announced at Monday's Board Meeting that the last day of school for students is currently June 20. He had a conversation with the NHDOE about the two days we missed school due to the Halloween wind storm this year. Given the circumstances of the storm and our school calendar, we will not have to have students make up those two days at the end of the year.

The Lurgio Players present Disney’s High School Musical Junior
The Lurgio Players will present Disney’s High School Musical Junior in the BHS theater Friday, March 16th at 7pm and Saturday March 17th at 2 and 7pm. The 7th and 8th grade cast comprises 47 students led by Director Laurel Devino. High School Musical Jr. is the story of basketball jock Troy Bolton and the brainy Gabriella Montez who, after meeting at a karaoke party, decide to shatter school norms by auditioning together for a musical. Sharpay and Ryan Evans, the theater twins, strike back at their new rivals and the whole school is thrown into chaos by the threat to their “Status Quo.” Watch Troy and Gabriella battle to win the part, and win over their friends, in the theatrical adaptation of the award winning movie High School Musical! Yearbook Order Time!
Online sales will be open Friday, March 16th until Friday, April 13th.

- Enter Your Student's last name and select your student from the list. If your student does not appear, follow the instructions on the screen to add them.
Cash or check orders will be collected in homeroom Monday, March 27 through Tuesday, April 4. Order forms will be sent home with students on Friday, March 23.

Softball Winter Workouts - UPDATE
Softball workouts are held at St. Elizabeth Seton from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. March 17 and March 24 will be the last workouts offered before the season. Anyone interested in playing softball in the spring is invited to attend. The workouts include throwing, fielding, pitching, catching, and hitting drills. Today’s Book Buzz is all about the Wildwood Chronicles series:

This series by Colin Meloy (lead singer of the band The Decemberists) and illustrated by Carson Ellis is a fantasy & adventure series that is nearly impossible to put down. It takes place in the a town in Oregon area and tells the story of 12 year old Prue McKeel, who is babysitting her 1 year old brother, Mac, when something very odd happens. While they are at the park, a group of crows suddenly fly down, kidnap Mac and fly him to the an area outside town called the Impassable Wilderness.
Prue gets on her bike and follows the crows until she gets to the river that separates her town from Impassable Wilderness. This is an area that is forbidden for Prue and her classmates and is known to be dangerous and full of wild animals. Soon Prue notices that she is not alone. Her neighbor, Curtis, has been following her and sees that she is distressed and wants to help out. How will Prue get her brother back? What will she tell her parents? The PTG and BeBold are excited to co-sponsor a presentation for all parents and guardians on Wednesday, March 28th from 7-8:15pm at BHS Auditorium:
Special guest speaker Jessica Lahey, veteran teacher, journalist, and author of The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed will present
“Understanding How to Parent So that Children Can Succeed: Addressing Childhood Anxiety and its Potential Pathway towards Substance Abuse.”
Jessica Lahey will provide insight on how to raise kids who are happy and healthy and less likely to turn to destructive coping strategies, including ways to prevent childhood addiction. Lahey will also share research on the most effective ways to parent and support the psycho-social and emotional needs of our children. Additionally, she will outline risk factors, explain which positive interventions can overcome those risk factors, and offer parents and teachers actionable, useful tools for raising happy, resilient children who will be less likely to turn to unhealthy behaviors when faced with the increasingly toxic stress and anxiety they face at home, in school and in our society. This event is open to all parents/guardians.
The 45-minute presentation will be followed by a 30-minute question and answer session.

Spring Sports Information

Improving our Attendance Practice
The district has tightened up our attendance practices this year. This is because many absences can make it challenging for a student to be successful in school. There has been an unintended (but very real) consequence to this change. Some families have shared with us that our approach has felt insensitive. I want to make it clear that there are times when students need to be out of school -- it could be for medical reasons, a family loss, or (especially this year) the flu. At the same time, we still need to be proactive with families about the impact of absences. So, if a student is absent for 10 days in one year, the school will continue to contact the parent/guardian to make sure we understand the challenges the family is facing. If a student reaches 15 days absent, the school will arrange a meeting to develop a plan (if one is not already in place) to help the student and family manage those underlying challenges. While our new practice will remain in place, we will work hard to communicate more clearly AND sensitively. - Sincerely, Chip McGee
Bedford High School Special Education Parent Information Night
The Bedford High School special education department is hosting a parent information night for parents of students transitioning to the high school with an IEP.
This is meant to provide an overview of what special education supports and services can look like in the high school setting. Also, a representative for each specialized program will be providing an overview and hold question and answer sessions.

Discussing Substance Abuse in our Community
These are two truly excellent community discussions on substance abuse. They were hosted by BeBold at their regular speaker series. If you could not attend, you might be interested in watching the videos. All of these discussions (and a lot more) is available on the BCTV website.
You Be The Chemist Challenge Registration
The You Be The Chemist Challenge qualifying test has been rescheduled for Monday, March 19th at 2:30. If you still want to register, it is not too late. Please fill out this Google Form to register. If you have any questions, email Ms. Rockwell at rockwella@bedfordnhk12.net.
To prepare for the exam, CEF recommends students explore all of the study materials at ChemEd, as well as other outside chemistry resources.
Destination Imagination - Hannaford Helps Fundraiser

A Note from the Ross A. Lurgio Kitchen
Eating breakfast at school helps children perform better. Studies show that children who eat breakfast regularly are less likely to be overweight and have a better quality of nutrient intake.
We serve breakfast daily at Ross Lurgio Middle School between 8:15-8:50 am.
A complete Grab N Go breakfast is offered for $1.25. Students may use their lunch account to purchase a grab n go breakfast.
Options include: Breakfast sandwiches, whole grain muffins, bagels and pancakes, just to name a few.
All breakfasts include a variety of fresh fruit and low-fat milk.
