LURGIO NEWS
November 1, 2019

Dear Lurgio Families,

This was the most spirited week in the history of the Ross A. Lurgio Middle School! Our students came out in record numbers to support our Witch Way 2 Wellness event and Spirit Week.

I must extend a huge, heartfelt thank you to all of the volunteers, staff, community members, students and sponsors for their support of our first Witch Way 2 Wellness event. Check the link below to see the generous groups and business from our area that supported the event. We raised over $20,000 to devote to activities for our advisories and enhance seating in the pod common areas.

The fun is not over as the highly anticipated Glow Dance is happening this evening at Lurgio from 6 PM to 9 PM. Admission is $5, and snacks and drinks are available for $1. Wear white and get ready to GLOW have some fun!

Sincerely,

Ed Joyce

New News

Cub of the Week

Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff reviews all nominees and selects the “Cub of the Week.”

We have three students this week who have truly stepped up for their classmates, making Lurgio a great place to learn.

This week’s Cub of the Week is Lana Morris. Lana used her free time in the morning to make a batch of red ribbons and a sign to hang in the pod hallway and decorate for red ribbon week. Thank you, Lana, for your school spirit and excitement!

This week’s Cub of the Week is Rose Cariello. Rose helped a student who forgot their materials by escorting her to each teacher to talk to ask for help. Rose reassured her along the way. Thank you for looking out for your classmates, Rose!

This week’s Cub of the Week is Nick Boucher. Nick was asked to help another student during the outdoor course portion of Witch Way 2 Wellness event. Upon being asked to perform this duty, Nick responded with interest and excitement. Thank you, Nick, for supporting a fellow teammate!

Best Buddies Starting At Lurgio

Next week, Lurgio will be kicking off their involvement in the Best Buddies International organization. We will be holding our first informational meeting for all students on Wednesday, November 6th from 2:30 to 3:15 during our already scheduled Unified PT program. We will have a representative from the organization to speak to students about how to get involved.

“Best Buddies International is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” For more information about this international program, please visit www.bestbuddiesonline.org.

At the meeting, we will talk about what it means to be a member of the club. Please feel free to reach out to any of the below advisors of the club with any questions you may have.

Reminders

Thanksgiving Baskets

Many in our community experience food insecurity. As the holiday season approaches, this can create additional strains on our families and students.  Please contact your school’s guidance counselor or school nurse, if you would like to receive a Thanksgiving Basket. We handle all requests with complete confidentiality.

Winter Athletics Registration

Please see this LETTER for information about winter sports (basketball, spirit, wrestling). The letter contains important information about meetings and try-outs for winter teams. Registration is open for the 2019-2020 season and must be completed before try-outs in order to participate. Be sure to register for the SPORT and CONCUSSION TESTING (as needed).

Geography and Spelling, and History Bees

Throughout the 2019-20 school year Lurgio students will have an opportunity to participate in various academic events sponsored by the school. The National Geographic GeoBee and the Scripps National Spelling Bee are two such events. Over the next few months, ELA and Social Studies teachers will provide students with information about each bee, hold classroom/pod bees, and provide preparation resources for students participating. Due to changes in the structure of the National History Bee, Lurgio is no longer sponsoring this program; however, any student who would like to participate independently is encouraged to do so. Information and registration details for the National History Bee can be found at: https://nationalhistorybee.com/.

Lurgio Strings Program

This year Lurgio will be offering strings instruction after school. If you are interested, please click here for more information.

Patriot’s Pen

Each year more than 111,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $900,000 in state and national awards. Each first-place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Want to apply? Read the rules and eligibility requirements, then download and complete the 2019-20 entry form. All student entries must be submitted to a sponsoring local VFW Post by midnight, Oct. 31.

Hannaford Helps Schools 2019

This fall, we celebrate 20 years of the Hannaford Helps Schools program! Since the program's inception, we've raised more than $12 million to help schools and kids reach their goals. We appreciate your continued partnership, and if you're new to the program – we welcome you!

Between 8/25 and 11/30, with the purchase of 4 participating Hannaford Helps Schools items, a customer will receive a printout for 3 School Dollars at the register. The customer can place that printout into your school's slot in the Hannaford Helps Schools collection tower which is located at the front of the store that your school is registered with.

Customers who shop with Hannaford To Go can give their School Dollar printouts to the associate handling their groceries and let them know which school slot to put them in.
This year, Hannaford will also donate $1,000 to the highest earning school per store.
NEW this year – your school may have a chance to earn DOUBLE School Dollars! The Hannaford store that has the highest increase of School Dollars turned in will DOUBLE the payouts to all its registered schools. Help your school earn double School Dollars by reminding parents to deposit their School Dollar printouts in the tower at the front of the store.

Kitchen News
The breakfast program will be featuring a delicious and nutritious strawberry pineapple smoothie. This smoothie is loaded with fresh fruit and vanilla yogurt for some beneficial vitamins, fiber and protein. In addition to breakfast combo meals, the kitchen will be offering a homemade pumpkin spice bread topped with semisweet chocolate chips. Yummy and nourishing pumpkin is exceptionally high in the antioxidant beta carotene which the body turns into vitamin A. Vitamin A helps to protect our skin and reduces breakouts, leaving a naturally healthy, soft, glow. Pumpkin is also filled with vitamins and minerals that help boost the body’s immune system and ability to fight infections.

The lunch program will be offering a festive Thanksgiving Gobbler sandwich on Thursday, November 7th. It’s made with freshly baked sourdough bread and is filled with antibiotic free roasted turkey, stuffing, lettuce, tomato and cranberry sauce. A fresh and crunchy Oasis hydroponic mixed greens and arugula salad with homemade vinaigrette pairs nicely with the holiday sandwich.--

Tech Corner Updates

We have noticed an increase in accidental damage to student chromebooks. Please remind students to be careful when using their chromebook and to be sure they are stored safely in their backpacks.

Chromebooks going out for extended warranty and accidental damage repairs, are repaired through Worth Ave Group Insurance Company and are sent to a third party repair facility in Oklahoma.  The average turnaround time for repairs is around three to six weeks, repair times are dependent on ticket queue volume, the extent of damage and part availability. Please know that while the student's chromebook is out being repaired, they are given a school loaner chromebook to use in its place.  This chromebook can go back and forth to school, and doesn't count toward their "loaner count". We notify students via email once the chromebook comes back from repair.

We hope this helps with any questions you have about insurance claim turnaround time.  If you have any further questions, please feel free to email Mrs. Dennis (dennisd@sau25.net) or Mrs. Manley (manleyj@sau25.net).
