This week’s Cub is Julsie Anderson. Julsie has won the Cub of the Week Award for her willingness to help others, positive spirit, and leadership on the student council. She is a remarkable student and works hard at making Lurgio a wonderful place to be. Congratulations Julsie!

Witch Way Event Update

The weather this year threw a bit of a curve ball into our original plans and caused us to move the event inside. What was supposed to be the Witch Way Fun Run morphed into the Witch Way Fun Fest. We were able to offer the over 300 participants crafts, food, fun, and games. Proceeds raised topped $23,000!  The show of support from Bedford residents of all ages (many in costume) was tremendous and is a testament to this amazing community. We also want to send out a HUGE thank you to our 2018 Sponsors!

Weekly Features

Book Buzz

Books for Breakfast abuzz about these books this week!

Donna Dennis, Tech Teacher:
A great historical fiction by Laurie Halse Anderson is Chains. I had to keep reading because I had to find out what happened. The true story is about a slave girl and her transition to freedom that gets interrupted and doesn't happen. The bad characters are so bad I couldn't help but to hate them. The story is told from the point of view of the slave and Seymour is my favorite character. When she is told to "RUN!" at the end of the book I cheered for her. The ending is so good. I just checked out the second in the series called Forge and I know I will read the third called Ashes.

Sophia from 8 E:
Mrs. Schoedinger shared Donna Gephart's latest book In Your Shoes so I had to share another book by Donna Gephart called Lily and Dunkin because this is the best book I have ever read. It's about two 8th grade kids' friendship. Lily is a transgender kid without her dad's support and Dunkin is struggling with bipolar disorder. Best book ever.

Livia from 7 S:
I wanted to share an edgy true story called Dear Nobody: The True Diary of Mary Rose. Mary struggles with addiction and I wanted to read three short excerpts to show you how the author grabs the reader to understand the intensity of addiction. Bullying and secrets are layers in the book too. Don't miss Gillian McCain's book.

Guidance Corner

This past week Lurgio’s Students Against Destructive Decisions participated in a number of activities highlighting the theme:  “Life is Your Journey. Travel Drug Free.” We calculated that about 80% of our student body wore red on Friday, demonstrating their commitment to a drug free lifestyle. Please log on to this site to VOTE for Lurgio in the redribbon.org contest for drug prevention. Thank you in advance for your vote!

Lurgio Tech Corner Update

In order to avoid confusion, Lurgio has had to disable the progress reports that have been available through PowerSchool. We are working closely with PowerSchool to find a solution to this report as well as the view that is on the mobile app. In the meantime, if you wish to view your students’ progress, please log into PowerSchool on your computer or chromebook.

So as quarter 1 comes to a close, we are happy to report that 63% of our students did not need to borrow a daily loaner at all this quarter!!  With the new quarter comes a clean loaner slate for all students. This quarter we have implemented a change in our procedure. We will email parents when their child has borrowed their 3rd chromebook. This email is to notify you that your child has met with the Tech Team and has come up with a plan to be better prepared. Please continue to remind your child to charge their Chromebook every night!

BHS/RAL Equestrian Club

The New Hampshire High School Equestrian Teams (NHHSET) organization as stated on their website (https://www.nhhset.org/) is "dedicated to promoting and organizing equestrian competition in high school athletic or activity programs. NHHSET will support, challenge and offer recognition to the dedicated students who both physically and mentally pursue the challenge of the equine sport."  Bedford High School has competed with a High School Equestrian Club for many years. The state has opened up the registration to middle school students again this year. The Bedford High School and Ross A Lurgio Middle School are once again teaming up to offer the opportunity for student equestrians to compete in NHHSET for the 2018-2019 school year.

The competition is comprised of three meets at the district level in the spring and culminates in the State Championship in May. Students of all riding levels are able to compete in all disciplines. Students compete individually and accumulate points toward a team final placement. Students are able to register as a rider or a spirit member. Riders must own or lease a horse in order to compete. Spirit members participate by working with the riding members to prepare horses for competition as well as "The Grooming Box Challenge" and a Practicum Experience. Participants will practice with the team coach in the winter on patterns as determined by the state board. The meets are run by parent volunteers and as such parents are required to volunteer at least one Saturday meet in the spring. Rider and Spirit registration begins December 1, 2018. Cost for Rider participation was $175 and Spirit participation was $20 last year. The cost structure is still being finalized at the state level.

Kathy Blake (blakek@sau25.net) is the club advisor. Please contact Kathy Blake for further information. Registration will close at the beginning of January. All documents and money orders must go through Kathy Blake in order to be part of the Bedford High School Club Team.
The club will begin meeting in early October. There will be a parent meeting to answer questions in early October as well.
