New News

Cub of the Week

Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff reviews all nominees and selects the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cub of the Week is Ryan O’Connor. Ryan is an outstanding student who is always there to lend a helping hand with staff and students alike. He was a tremendous support to campgroup Papa on the Cardigan trip last week. Ryan is a remarkable young man, and we are truly fortunate to have him as part of our Lurgio school community.

Tripod Survey Information

Between October 7th and October 25th, the district will administer the "Tripod Survey" to students in grades 2 – 12. This survey asks for the students' perspectives on our teaching practices. All survey responses are anonymous and confidential. The purpose is to use this feedback to help our professional staff continue to improve. This year, parents were able to provide permission for their child to take the survey through InfoSnap registration. If you opted your child out of the survey, please know that we will make other arrangements for him/her during the time that his/her class is taking the survey.

If you would like to view the surveys, please click on the links below.

Reminders

You Be The Chemist Challenge

Does your child enjoy chemistry? The YBTC challenge just might be for them! The YBTC Challenge is collaborative, multilevel academic competition that celebrates the science of chemistry and elevates STEM careers.

This year they have changed the format from an individual challenge to a team-based participation of four students. Students will take a qualifying exam individually and all team member’s scores will be compiled for an average team score. The team with the highest average qualifier score will advance to the state challenge.

If your child is interested in learning more, please email Mrs. Rockwell at rockwella@bedfordnhk12.net with your child’s name (and teammates if they already have some in mind). Please let your child know that our first informational meeting will be held Tuesday, October 15th during WIN in room 205 (located in 7th grade blue pod).

Hannaford Helps Schools 2019

This fall, we celebrate 20 years of the Hannaford Helps Schools program! Since the program's inception, we've raised more than $12 million to help schools and kids reach their goals. We appreciate your continued partnership, and if you're new to the program – we welcome you!

Between 8/25 and 11/30, with the purchase of 4 participating Hannaford Helps Schools items, a customer will receive a printout for 3 School Dollars at the register. The customer can place that printout into your school's slot in the Hannaford Helps Schools collection tower which is located at the front of the store that your school is registered with.

Customers who shop with Hannaford To Go can give their School Dollar printouts to the associate handling their groceries and let them know which school slot to put them in.
This year, Hannaford will also donate $1,000 to the highest earning school per store.
NEW this year – your school may have a chance to earn DOUBLE School Dollars! The Hannaford store that has the highest increase of School Dollars turned in will DOUBLE the payouts to all its registered schools. Help your school earn double School Dollars by reminding parents to deposit their School Dollar printouts in the tower at the front of the store.

The Bedford Food Pantry, through their School Lunch Plus program, provides students in Bedford who face food insecurity two lunches each weekend (with complete privacy/anonymity). Book Buzz

Books for Breakfast is abuzz about these books this week!

Livia from 8 East:
I wanted to share Marcus Vega Doesn’t Speak Spanish. This is a brilliant book about an awkward kid who gets in trouble. His mother decides it is best for the family to find the dad in Puerto Rico. Marcus is coping with all this while caring and protecting his autistic brother. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

Mrs. Parker from Family & Consumer Science:
Dysasters by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast is the first book in a new paranormal fantasy series and even though it sounds crazy, it is really well written and a great read. Adoptive daughter of a gifted scientist, Foster Stewart doesn’t live a “normal” life but controlling cloud formations and seeing airwaves aren’t things most eighteen year olds can do. Small town star quarterback and quintessential dreamy boy next door, Tate “Nighthawk” Taylor has never thought much about his extra abilities. Sure, his night vision comes in handy during games, but who wouldn’t want that extra edge? From the moment Foster and Tate collide, their worlds spiral and a deadly tornado forces them to work together, fully awakening their not-so-natural ability - the power to control air. As they each deal with the tragic loss of loved ones, they’re caught by another devastating blow – they are the first in a group of teens genetically manipulated before birth to bond with the elements, and worse… they’re being hunted. If you like fantasy give this book a try.

Mrs. Detwiler from the Media Center:
Since it's October I wanted to share a creepy book. This is BONE GARDEN by Heather Kassner and the idea is a girl finds out she is made of dust and bone. It was magic that brought her to life and she is seeking who created that magic. You'll meet Ireelle and Mrs. Vesper and find out how they are connected to each other. Be ready for graveyards and bone dust.

Mrs. Schoedinger, Reading Specialist:
As a huge Wendelin Van Draanen fan, I wanted to share Wild Bird. We have 25 copies of this book about Wren's poor decisions that lands her in a wilderness survival camp experience for 8 weeks in the desert of western America. It is action packed from the first page. Follow Wren's journey in the desert and see how she mends relationships with family and friends. See what happens to her at 3:47 a.m. on the very first page.
