Winter Athletics Registration
Please see this LETTER for information about winter sports (basketball, spirit, wrestling). The letter contains important information about meetings and try-outs for winter teams. Registration is open for the 2019-2020 season and must be completed before try-outs in order to participate. Be sure to register for the SPORT and CONCUSSION TESTING (as needed).

Geography and Spelling, and History Bees
Throughout the 2019-20 school year Lurgio students will have an opportunity to participate in various academic events sponsored by the school. The National Geographic GeoBee and the Scripps National Spelling Bee are two such events. Over the next few months, ELA and Social Studies teachers will provide students with information about each bee, hold classroom/pod bees, and provide preparation resources for students participating. Due to changes in the structure of the National History Bee, Lurgio is no longer sponsoring this program; however, any student who would like to participate independently is encouraged to do so. Information and registration details for the National History Bee can be found at: https://nationalhistorybee.com/.

Patriot’s Pen
Each year more than 111,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $900,000 in state and national awards. Each first-place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Want to apply? Read the rules and eligibility requirements, then download and complete the 2019-20 entry form. All student entries must be submitted to a sponsoring local VFW Post by midnight, Oct. 31.

You Be The Chemist Challenge
Does your child enjoy chemistry? The YBTC challenge just might be for them! The YBTC Challenge is collaborative, multilevel academic competition that celebrates the science of chemistry and elevates STEM careers.

This year they have changed the format from an individual challenge to a team-based participation of four students. Students will take a qualifying exam individually and all team member’s scores will be compiled for an average team score. The team with the highest average qualifier score will advance to the state challenge.

If your child is interested in learning more, please email Mrs. Rockwell at rockwella@bedfordnhk12.net with your child’s name (and teammates if they already have some in mind). Please let your child know that our first informational meeting will be held Tuesday, October 15th during WIN in room 205 (located in 7th grade blue pod).

Hannaford Helps Schools 2019

This fall, we celebrate 20 years of the Hannaford Helps Schools program! Since the program's inception, we've raised more than $12 million to help schools and kids reach their goals. We appreciate your continued partnership, and if you're new to the program – we welcome you!

Between 8/25 and 11/30, with the purchase of 4 participating Hannaford Helps Schools items, a customer will receive a printout for 3 School Dollars at the register. The customer can place that printout into your school's slot in the Hannaford Helps Schools collection tower which is located at the front of the store that your school is registered with.

Customers who shop with Hannaford To Go can give their School Dollar printouts to the associate handling their groceries and let them know which school slot to put them in.
This year, Hannaford will also donate $1,000 to the highest earning school per store.
NEW this year – your school may have a chance to earn DOUBLE School Dollars! The Hannaford store that has the highest increase of School Dollars turned in will DOUBLE the payouts to all its registered schools. Help your school earn double School Dollars by reminding parents to deposit their School Dollar printouts in the tower at the front of the store.

Weekend Lunch Bags
The Bedford Food Pantry, through their School Lunch Plus program, provides students in Bedford who face food insecurity two lunches each weekend (with complete privacy/anonymity). Parents/guardians, please contact the school guidance counselor or school nurse if you would like your child to participate in this program.

Tripod Survey Information
Between October 7th and October 25th, the district will administer the "Tripod Survey" to students in grades 2 – 12. This survey asks for the students' perspectives on our teaching practices. All survey responses are anonymous and confidential. The purpose is to use this feedback to help our professional staff continue to improve. This year, parents were able to provide permission for their child to take the survey through InfoSnap registration. If you opted your child out of the survey, please know that we will make other arrangements for him/her during the time that his/her class is taking the survey.

If you would like to view the surveys, please click on the links below.

Book Buzz
Books for Breakfast is abuzz about these books this week!

Josie, Caitlyn, Julsie and Audrey shared The Selection series by Kiera Cass:
This series is awesome because of the love triangle, the writing style, the whole dystopian feel, and the great character arc that is developed in each individual book and throughout the series. For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape a rigid caste system, live in a palace, and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon. But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her, and competing for a crown she doesn’t want.

Nick B. shared James Patterson’s Middle School series:
This is my favorite series of all time! The main character, Rafe, is in every book, and all the laughs make this series the best.

Joe shared the Adventurers Wanted series by M.L. Forman:
This is my favorite series of all time! The sign is small, tucked into the corner of Mr. Clutter’s bookshop window: Adventurers Wanted. Apply Within. No one but fifteen-year-old Alex Taylor even seems to notice it is there. And for Alex, who has wished for a change in his life, it is an irresistible invitation. Upon entering Mr. Clutter s shop, Alex is swept away to a faraway land filled with heroic warriors, mysterious elves, and hard-working dwarves.

Mrs. Detwiler shared a new book, The Remarkable Inventions of Walter Mortinson by Quinn Sosna-Spear:
In the humdrum town of Moormouth, Walter Mortinson’s unusual inventions cause nothing but trouble. After one of his contraptions throws the town into chaos, Walter’s mother demands he cut the nonsense and join the family mortuary business.
