New News
Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the “Cub of the Week.”

This week’s Cub of the Week is Ian Fletcher.  Ian is always inclusive and kind when participating in our Unified PE classes, and he extends that same warmth throughout the school day. This week Ian is being honored for going above and beyond to embrace the message of our recent motivational speaker, David Flood, by ensuring that no student sat alone during his lunch.  Thanks Ian! Your open spirit is one of the things that makes Lurgio such a great school.

The first page is a helpful summary.  Additionally you may find helpful information here, from the Partnership for Drug Free Kids.  This article offer some great suggestions on how to navigate this new topic with your children.  The asset newsletter this week is titled Boundaries and Expectations.

Book Buzz

Today in Books for Breakfast we watched a book review on line by Nerdy Book Club member Colby Sharp of of the book Genesis Begins Again  by Alicia D. Williams.
This is considered the best book yet of 2019. It’s about a girl whose father makes his living gambling. When he wins, things are good and when he loses things are bad. This is a story of one bad streak where the family is evicted and the dad turns to drinking. Genesis is an African American whose mother is light skinned and father is darker skinned. The concept of "colorism" is discussed: lighter skinned African Americans supposedly have better lives. Genesis is darker skinned and her father is unpleasant about that. Every character is well developed and play an important role telling the story.
