Lurgio News for February 2, 2018

LURGIO NEWS
February 2, 2018

Dear Parents,

As many of you are aware from the news, flu season is in full swing.  If your child is showing symptoms of the flu, it is important to consult with a doctor.  If your child is diagnosed with the flu and/or shows flu like symptoms such as a fever, it is important to keep him/her home.  Please remember, when students are sick--fever, vomiting, diarrhea, etc...--they need to be out of school for at least 24 hours after they are symptom-free.  This helps to ensure that they do not spread their illness to other students and staff members.

As a preventative measure, we will be  disinfecting classrooms, doorknobs, bathrooms, etc. more frequently.  I’ve also asked teachers to stop using shared supplies, if possible.

Please take a look at THIS LINK from the CDC, which offers parents helpful information regarding the treatment and prevention of the flu.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our school nurse, Evelyn Chessie 310-9100  x 34415

Sincerely,
Ed Joyce

Last Day of School Update

We have had five school cancellations this year, so the current last day of school is Wednesday, June 20.

Book Buzz

We had author Melanie Conklin Skype in with Books for Breakfast Cafe today! She answered student's questions and talking about her reading and writing life.

Melanie Conklin’s book is Counting Thyme and she got the idea after reading R. J. Palacio's Wonder.
This book is about sibling coping with a brother's medical condition and how that would impact her life. She created the character Thyme who's brother, Val, is battling neuroblastoma and the family moves from San Diego, CA to NYC for his treatment. Melanie starts her story off so well from the first sentence!

Melanie Conklin’s favorite book is Rebecca Stead's Newbery Medal winner When You Reach Me.:
Shortly after a fall-out with her best friend, sixth grader Miranda starts receiving mysterious notes, and she doesn’t know what to do. The notes tell her that she must write a letter—a true story, and that she can’t share her mission with anyone. It would be easy to ignore the strange messages, except that whoever is leaving them has an uncanny ability to predict the future. If that is the case, then Miranda has a big problem—because the notes tell her that someone is going to die, and she might be too late to stop it.

Parent Pick-Up

Please exercise caution and courtesy when picking up your students at the end of the day. The dismissal time is a bit hectic. While the greater majority of parents have been very respectful, we have had a few incidents reckless driving and the use profane language and gestures. I ask that everyone please abide by the campus speed limit and be very aware of our student pedestrians. Also, please understand that our duty teachers are at the dismissal lines in order to keep our students safe, so I ask that you treat them with deference as they do this very important job. Thank you in advance for your understanding and compliance with this request.

National History Bee

Lurgio Middle School is again offering students in grades 7 and 8 an opportunity to participate in the National History Bee. The National History Bee is an exciting academic competition designed to motivate and reward students for studying history! If you are a student who loves history and enjoys academic competition, here is your opportunity to combine the two!
