Dear Parents,
Lurgio will be celebrating school spirit and our love of literacy next week! The student council worked with our student body to decide on a series of themes for our Spirit Week. These themes culminates on Friday with Pajama Day and our annual Read-A-Thon Literacy Celebration. Speaking of the Read-A-Thon, I want to thank all parents and students for all their enthusiasm and generosity through monetary and book donations for the Read-A-Thon thus far, and I encourage you to keep the momentum going through next week.

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cub is Molly Crowder. Molly’s teachers describe her as bright, positive, and kind. She is honored for being especially supportive and helpful to a fellow classmate. Way to go Molly! Thank you for making Lurgio a wonderful place to learn.

Save the Date - Grandparents Day March 15
Ross A. Lurgio Middle School’s Annual Grandparents & Senior Citizen Visitation Day is planned for Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. Guests will be treated to a dress rehearsal of the play High School Musical followed by tours of the school. A light luncheon sponsored by the Bedford PTG will take place in the library. Registration is limited so please RSVP by clicking here for the pre-registration form.
Spring Sports
Spring sports will begin the week of March 26. More details regarding concussion testing, start dates, locations, and paperwork will be sent out the week after February break.

Last Day of School Update
We have had six school cancellations this year, so the current last day of school is Thursday, June 21.
Book Buzz
All the Read-a-Thon raffle prizes were on display today at Books for Breakfast Cafe! Students loved looking at Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles boxed set of 5 books, the Kass Morgan boxed set of 4 books in The 100 series, the Kiera Cass boxed set of 4 books in The Selection series. There is also a nonfiction basket of Guiness Book of World Records, Disasters, and Sports of 2018. There are 4 books by Sigmund Brouwer, 4 books by James Patterson, 4 books by John Green, 4 books by Mike Lupica, and 4 books by Gordon Korman. Other prizes include Kindles, headphones, and gift cards for iTunes, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and the Inside Scoop!

I just started a great book, and I can't wait to see how it plays out. It's based on Rainbow Rowell's book Fan Girl, and this one is called Carry On. Simon is the best wizard in the universe and has to fight Humdrum who is sucking up all the magic in atmosphere. There are dead spots where magic doesn't work and this is a great book.

My favorite book in a series is Jeanne DuPrau's City of Ember! I like how two kids try to fix everything that the adults have messed up after a time capsule has been opened up after 200 years. The society is all underground and the kids are assigned jobs to make the society work. The adults are nasty and the kids save the day. Best series ever but the movie is the worst! Don't see the movie! Read the book!

“Understanding How to Parent So that Children Can Succeed: Addressing Childhood Anxiety and its Potential Pathway towards Substance Abuse”
Special guest speaker Jessica Lahey veteran teacher, journalist, and author of The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed.
Jessica Lahey will provide insight on how to raise kids who are happy and healthy and less likely to turn to destructive coping strategies, including ways to prevent childhood addiction. Lahey will also share research on the most effective ways to parent and support the psycho-social and emotional needs of our children. Additionally, she will outline risk factors, explain which positive interventions can overcome those risk factors, and offer parents and teachers actionable, useful tools for raising happy, resilient children who will be less likely to turn to unhealthy behaviors when faced with the increasingly toxic stress and anxiety they face at home, in school and in our society. This event is open to all parents/guardians.
The 45-minute presentation will be followed by a 30-minute question and answer session.

You Be The Chemist Challenge Registration
Lurgio students have the opportunity to participate in the "You Be the Chemist" (YBTC) Challenge, organized by the Chemical Educational Foundation. The YBTC Challenge is a fun and interactive academic competition that engages students in learning about important chemistry concepts, scientific discoveries, and laboratory safety.
To qualify for the state competition, students must take a 25-multiple-choice qualifying exam on Thursday, March 8 at 2:30 in the media center. The top students from Lurgio will advance to the state competition to be held on April 7 at Bishop Guertin High School. The top student from the state will win an expenses-paid trip to the National Challenge in Washington D.C. in June.
If your child is interested in participating, please fill out this Google Form to register. The registration deadline is Friday, February 23. If you have any questions, email Ms. Rockwell at rockwella@bedfordnhk12.net.
To prepare for the exam, CEF recommends students explore all of the study materials at ChemEd, as well as other outside chemistry resources.
Softball Winter Workouts - UPDATE
~Winter workouts will not be held on February 24 and March 3 due to February break~
Winter workouts for softball began on Saturday, January 6th and continue weekly through mid-March. The workouts are held at St. Elizabeth Seton from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Anyone interested in playing softball in the spring is invited to attend. The workouts include throwing, fielding, pitching, catching, and hitting drills. BHS Theatre Company present Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”
The Bedford High School Theatre Company will proudly present William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” Thursday- Saturday, February 15-17, @ 7:00 p.m. in the Bedford High School Theatre. An alumnus of the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, director Tim Hackney brings a unique treatment of “Twelfth Night” to the stage. In addition to the timeless words of Shakespeare, the cast will bring Tim’s original musical compositions to life. Tickets are $10 for Adults and $5.00 for students, and can be purchased in advance at www.seatyourself.biz/
