Dear Parents,

I wrote to you earlier in the day about the State Assessments that our students will be taking next week. If you missed it, click here for access. I wanted to add just one additional note that I appreciate all of the work that you do as families to support our students as they approach these high-stakes assessments. Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.”

This week’s Cub is Jacob Brisson. Jacob is a kind and caring student who consistently goes out of his way to include all students. This week, when he saw a student sitting alone at lunch, he approached her and invited her to join him and his friends. He then carried her lunch tray for her over to the new table. Thank you for your kindness, Jacob, you are a truly positive part of our Lurgio school community.

Weekly Features

Book Buzz

The spotlight is on Donna Gephart as we prepare for her author visit on May 15th. Our Whole-School Read this year is Gephart’s Death By Toilet Paper. Thanks to PTG and Opportunities Reaching Kids (ORK) funds for sponsoring the Donna Gephart presentations and workshops. You might also want to check out her other books:

How to Survive Middle School:
When David and his best friend have a fight, David is lucky enough to make a pretty cool new friend, Sophie–who just (gulp) happens to be a girl. Sophie thinks David’s videos are hilarious, and she starts sending out the links to everyone she knows. Sophie’s friends tell their friends, and before David knows it, thousands of people are viewing his videos–including some of the last people he would have expected. David may still feel like a real-life schmo, but is he ready to become an Internet superstar?

As If Being 12 3/4 Isn't Bad Enough My Mother is Running for President:
As if being 12 3/4 isn’t bad enough, Vanessa Rothrock’s mother is running for president and it’s ruining her life. Isn’t it enough that her enormous feet trip her up all the time, even on stage during the school spelling bee? Isn’t it enough that Reginald Trumball, love of Vanessa’s pathetic life, read her personal and private list of deficiencies to some boy she doesn’t even know? And that the Boob Fairy hasn’t visited her even once?! Doesn’t Mom realize that Vanessa needs her more than the rest of the country? More importantly, doesn’t she realize that she may be in grave danger? Vanessa's receiving threatening notes at school–notes that imply some psycho has it out for her mother at the Democratic National Convention. Vanessa might be the only person who can save her. But does she have the courage to do what that requires?

Lily and Dunkin:
Lily Jo McGrother, born Timothy McGrother, is a girl. But being a girl is not so easy when you look like a boy. Especially when you’re in the eighth grade. Dunkin Dorfman, birth name Norbert Dorfman, is dealing with bipolar disorder and has just moved from the New Jersey town he’s called home for the past thirteen years. This would be hard enough, but the fact that he is also hiding from a painful secret makes it even worse. One summer morning, Lily Jo McGrother meets Dunkin Dorfman, and their lives forever change.

“Earth Shaking” News

Through the collaborative support of the Bedford Education Foundation, the Bedford School District, and community funding, Ross A. Lurgio Middle School has the opportunity to partner with the Boston College Weston Observatory to become the Boston College Educational Seismology Project Flagship School for New Hampshire. This project will actually install a fully functioning seismograph at Lurgio. Data collected from this instrument will be used to enhance our eighth grade science curriculum. The data will also be used for research at Boston College and available for the community as well. As a community, we are currently seeking donations to support this project. If you are interested in learning more please contact Tracy Richmond, BEF fundraising chair at tracyrichmond@me.com. This project is sure to have a lasting impact on our community.

2018-19 School Calendar

The School Board has approved the 2018-19 School Calendar. Please note that there is a substantial change for 2018-19. The district will shift from tracking days to tracking hours. As a result, the last day of school for 2018-19 will be no later than June 13 and could be as early as June 6. The first five snow days, if needed, will be made up by students at the end of the year. Any snow days beyond five days will not need to be made up by students. This should bring some more predictability to the end of the year for families.

Gsuite Information for Parents

Some of our parents have asked for an explanation of our Gsuite, the tools within Chrome our students now use for much of their school work. Our technology teachers have developed this Gsuite Information for Parents. For parents/guardians who are interested in seeing the work of their child, just ask your son/daughter to log in with their account or provide you with their password to showcase the work completed.
