Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.”

This week’s Cub is Peyton Deachman. Peyton is a Student Library Assistant who consistently comes in during her lunch period to help shelve library books. She is helpful, reliable, and responsible. She is also a positive peer role model and has encouraged her friends to help out as well! Thank you Peyton!

Weekly Features

Book Buzz

New Hampshire Author Emilie Burack will present at Books for Breakfast next Friday, April 13 in person talking about her book The Runaway’s Gold, her works in progress, and her writing process. Be sure to come!

FACS Teacher Kristi Parker is a Phillip Pullman fan and is totally enjoying the audio version of his latest book, Book of Dust, a prequel to The Golden Compass. The character Lyra from The Golden Compass is the focus in the Book of Dust:
Malcolm Polstead is the kind of boy who notices everything but is not much noticed himself. And so perhaps it was inevitable that he would become a spy. Malcolm's parents run an inn called the Trout, on the banks of the river Thames, and all of Oxford passes through its doors. Malcolm and his daemon, Asta, routinely overhear news and gossip, and the occasional scandal, but during a winter of unceasing rain, Malcolm catches wind of something new: intrigue. He finds a secret message inquiring about a dangerous substance called Dust—and the spy it was intended for finds him. When she asks Malcolm to keep his eyes open, he sees suspicious characters everywhere: the explorer Lord Asriel, clearly on the run; enforcement agents from the Magisterium; a gyptian named Coram with warnings just for Malcolm; and a beautiful woman with an evil monkey for a daemon. All are asking about the same thing: a girl—just a baby—named Lyra. Lyra is the kind of person who draws people in like magnets. And Malcolm will brave any danger, and make shocking sacrifices, to bring her safely through the storm.

Tucker from 8 East is buzzing about Neil Gaiman's Coraline:
This book is so creepy and such a creative, imaginative plot. You can read the fiction version or the graphic novel version. Both are awesome. Coraline moves with her family into this huge mansion that is divided into 3 separate flats. She hates it. Her parents are so busy managing it and she is miserable and goes exploring. She finds a door and asks her mom for a key which leads only to a wall of bricks. Coraline then finds a tunnel and it's everything to her liking. She meets a creepy boy, Wybee, who gives her a doll that looks just like her. Creepy again. There is a version of her parents there who have button eyes. Creepy again. Then Coraline goes back but this time the place is totally disgusting and horrid, and she is trapped there with Other Mother and Other Father. Creepy. She has to do three tasks to escape. So creepy and great. Be sure to read Coraline.

Reminders

Midnight Madness April 6

We would like to invite all students to our annual Midnight Madness indoor extravaganza. Each year we convert our full BHS/RAL gymnasium into a massive indoor playground with inflatable obstacle courses, a mechanical bull, and much, much more. The cost is $20, which includes a $5 snack card. Additional snack cards can be purchased for $5 each. Pizza, cotton candy, snow cones, water and popcorn will be available for purchase. We will also be showing movies in our dining hall.

Finally, we are partnering with the PTG to get parent volunteers for this event. Here is the link to the SignUp Genius. If you can help for part or all of the night, which runs 7:00 PM to midnight, we can use all the support we can get.

2018-19 School Calendar

The School Board has approved the 2018-19 School Calendar. Please note that there is a substantial change for 2018-19. The district will shift from tracking days to tracking hours. As a result, the last day of school for 2018-19 will be no later than June 13 and could be as early as June 6. The first five snow days, if needed, will be made up by students at the end of the year. Any snow days beyond five days will not need to be made up by students. This should bring some more predictability to the end of the year for families.

Gsuite Information for Parents

Some of our parents have asked for an explanation of our Gsuite, the tools within Chrome our students now use for much of their school work. Our technology teachers have developed this Gsuite Information for Parents. For parents/guardians who are interested in seeing the work of their child, just ask your son/daughter to log in with their account or provide you with their password to showcase the work completed.

Last Day of School now June 20

The Superintendent announced at Monday's Board Meeting that the last day of school for students is currently June 20. He had a conversation with the NHDOE about the two days we missed school due to the Halloween wind storm this year. Given the circumstances of the storm and our school calendar, we will not have to have students make up those two days at the end of the year.
