It is hard to imagine that is just six short days our 2016-17 school year will conclude. After a year of diligent academic work, our students will go on their annual outings to Gunstock (7th grade) and Canobie Lake Park (8th grade) next week. The trips are a wonderful way for our students and teachers to celebrate their successful school year together.

Best,

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.”

This week’s Cub is the entire Lurgio baseball team. For the past two years, Ben Westbrook has been the hardworking, but lighthearted manager of the baseball team. In order to say thank you to Ben, the players on the team gave Ben the gift of a new pair of Oakley sunglasses! This act of kindness was not prompted by any coach or parent, but was a rather genuine display of appreciation for all that Ben has done for the team. Congratulations to Ben and the rest of the members of the baseball team: Nicholas Asadourian, Emet Baker, Austin Bequeath, Camden Cilley, Cade Corbett, Thomas Crowley, Andrew Douthart, Zachary Fletcher, Ryan Juliano, Matthew Landry, Ethan Larochelle, Kyle Lavigne, Alexander Lobdell, Brett Niland, Todd O'Connell, Cameron O'Regan, Michael Pratte. These boys all exemplify the ideals of teamwork, generosity and kindness!

Early Dismissal on Last Day of School
On Monday, June 19, students will be dismissed from school two hours early. Buses will still provide transportation home. Please plan accordingly. If you have any questions, please contact the Main Office at (603) 310-9100.

8th Grade Canobie Trip - Late Return to School
This is a reminder to eighth grade parents that the students will arrive back to Lurgio after regular dismissal on Wednesday, June 14. Buses typically return from Canobie Lake Park by 4:30PM. Please arrange to have your child transported home from school on that day. If you have any questions, please contact your student’s homeroom teacher.

Attention 8th Grade Parents

The 2017-2018 BHS Course Schedules will be released to students and families this Monday, June 12th. Students will receive paper copies of their 2017-2018 BHS schedules during the WIN period. At that time, parents will be able to view an electronic copy via PowerSchool.

6/13-6/16  Add + Drop requests will be considered at BHS. All current 8th graders will use a form to communicate requests. Since the students are in a different building and busy with their own end of year activities at Lurgio, we have created the change request form. We realize that not all course information is available (such as what blocks courses are offered) but hope that completing as much of the form as you can will begin a dialog between yourself and the BHS school counselor. Please provide your contact information on the form and we’ll be in touch as necessary. In the meantime, simply drop your completed form off at Lurgio and BHS staff will pick them up to be distributed to the individual school counselors. Forms will be attached to the student schedules.

Any dropped courses after June 16th will be marked on the high school transcript with a "WP" to note withdraw pass (no impact to GPA). We can work together next week to make the schedules what your students need in the year ahead!

End of year Reminders from the School Nurse:
Please remind your student to bring his/her epi pens/inhalers on the 7th grade field trip to Gunstock and the 8th grade field trip to Canobie.  The weather will be very warm next week, please have your student's  bring their water bottles to school.

The last day to pick up your student's medication/inhalers/epi pens in the nursing office will be on June 19th, 2017 by 1:00 pm.  After this date, all medication will be discarded.  You can also pick up forms for the following school year during this time..  If you have any questions, please call the Health Office at 310-9100 x 34415, Thank You!

Lurgio Tech Corner Update

With the end of the school year fast approaching, we have some student chromebooks that are still out for repairs.  We will be asking students for the school loaner chromebooks back by next week.  Students will be able to check out a daily loaner if they need a chromebook while at school.  We will contact parents when the chromebook is back from repair for pickup at the Lurgio Main Office.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Dennis at dennisd@sau25.net.

CHROMEBOOK INSURANCE RENEWAL INFORMATION
Parents have the option to renew the insurance for the 17-18 school year but you must purchase this option prior to August 1st. The cost for the renewal is $27 which not only includes the accidental breakage/theft insurance but also extended manufacturer warranty.  The original manufacturer's warranty is only valid for one year. We strongly encourage parents to consider this optional insurance. All checks should be made out to the Bedford School District. Please include your student’s name and ID number on the check. The cost of the insurance is $27. One check for multiple student insurance renewals is also acceptable.  Please mail the checks to: McKelvie Intermediate School – Technology Hub or pay online via sendmoneytoschool.com.

REPLACEMENT CHROMEBOOK INFORMATION
We have received numerous inquiries from parents of students currently in grades 7 thru 11 regarding the option to purchase a new replacement chromebook device through the district for their student to use in school in the 2017-2018 school year. If you are interested in purchasing a Chromebook device through the district, please complete this form by June 19th 2017.  Optional insurance coverage will be available for parents to purchase when payment is made.

2016/2017 Yearbooks Are Here

The yearbooks are here and will be distributed to students who pre-ordered on Monday, June 12.  Good news - there are extra copies available for purchase!  Any student wishing to purchase a yearbook can bring $30 cash or check (payable to Lurgio) to Mrs. Dennis in the Tech Corner in the back of the Media Center.  Yearbooks will be available until they are sold out!

Book Buzz
This week, Lurgio was once again abuzz with talk about books. Here are two of our favorites:

Turn Left at the Cow by Lisa Bullard is a great mystery full of humor.  Thirteen-year-old Trav has always wondered about his dead-before-he-was-born dad. But when he heads from California to his grandmother's house in rural Minnesota, hoping to learn about his past, he gets more than he bargained for.

It turns out his dad was involved in a bank robbery right before he mysteriously disappeared, and the loot from the take is still missing. Along with Kenny and Iz, the kids next door, Trav embarks on a search for the cash. But the trio’s adventure quickly turns dangerous when it becomes clear that someone else is looking for the money—someone who won’t give up without a fight.

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown is for all technology fans who wonder if a robot can survive in the wilderness. When robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she discovers that she is alone on a remote, wild island. She has no idea how she got there or what her purpose is--but she knows she needs to survive. After battling a fierce storm and escaping a vicious bear attack, she realizes that her only hope for survival is to adapt to her surroundings and learn from the island's unwelcoming animal inhabitants.

As Roz slowly befriends the animals, the island starts to feel like home--until, one day, the robot's mysterious past comes back to haunt her.

Donna LaRue, MA, MLADC, LCMHC, RAL Guidance Counselor, posts a weekly, helpful parenting newsletter article, as well as other relevant material on her website. This week she focuses on School Boundaries. Click here to learn ways you can help instill this important asset.  Check out Ms. LaRue’s web page for weekly Asset newsletters by clicking here.

Claudette Stone, RAL Behavior Specialist, posts helpful information about executive functioning skills, which are developmental, meaning that each of these skills develop with age, and not on a set schedule. Just as children learn to walk and talk at different times, it is normal for our brains to learn to organize, inhibit, and plan at different times.  More information can be found at Mrs. Stone's Website--Executive Functioning Skills

Jack Slatoff Ph.D. is a retired clinical child psychologist with over 55 years of practice in southern New Hampshire.  Specializing in therapy for adolescents and consultation with their parents, Dr. Slatoff has been a psychological consultant for the Bedford School District for 35 years.  He continues to consult weekly at Ross A.
