Science NECAP, Fire Drill, and Stand by Me, oh my! We certainly had quite a week at Lurgio. As we race to the finish over the next four weeks, I am constantly reminded of the dedication of our students, the professionalism of our staff, and the support of our community. I feel truly fortunate to be the principal of such a terrific school.

Attention 8th Grade Parents

The 8th Grade Parent Information Night will be on May 22, 2017, at 6:00 PM in the BHS Theater. This is an opportunity for the parents of rising 9th graders to hear about life as a ninth grader and ask questions about the high school experience.

The 2017-2018 BHS Course Schedules will be released to students and families on June 12th.

June 13-June 16:  Add + Drop requests will be considered at BHS (rising 10-12 graders) during finals. All current 8th graders will use a form to communicate requests. It will be located in the Lurgio News emails. Copies will also be available in the Lurgio Guidance Office.

8th Grade Johns Hopkins CTY Talent Search Participants

If your 8th grader participated in the Johns Hopkins CTY Talent Search and was invited to an awards ceremony for achieving high honor scores as either a 7th or 8th grader, please e-mail Mrs. Rockwell at  We like to recognize this accomplishment at the 8th grade awards night and we don’t want to miss anyone!

Book Buzz
Be sure to see the summer reading ideas on the RAL Media Center website! Today, our Scrabble-Playing Book for Breakfast Participants were buzzing about Torn Away by Jennifer Brown:

This  amazing book is about how a tornado devastates a town, a neighborhood, a family and a daughter. Jersey Cameron has always loved a good storm. Watching the clouds roll in and the wind pick up. Smelling the electricity in the air. Dancing barefoot in the rain. She lives in the Midwest, after all, where the weather is sure to keep you guessing. Jersey knows what to do when the tornado sirens sound. But she never could have prepared for this.

When her town is devastated by a tornado, Jersey loses everything. As she struggles to overcome her grief, she's sent to live with relatives she hardly knows -- family who might as well be strangers. In an unfamiliar place, can Jersey discover that even on the darkest of days, there are some things no tornado can destroy?

Lurgio Tech Corner Update

If your child is having issues with their chromebook, please have them come and see us in the Tech Corner in the back of the Media Center and Mrs. Dennis or Mrs. Manley will help to resolve their issue.  Students whose chromebooks are out being repaired should check their school email for updates on the status of any repairs.

PTG ColorBlast 5K Registration is OPEN
The PTG is excited to announce that registration for our first annual ColorBlast 5K Run/Walk is open! Register today and mark your calendar, Sunday, June 4th @ 10:00am, for a super-fun, family event! Not a runner? That’s OK. You can walk, skip, hop, twirl, dance or stroll your way through six color stations along the 5K route that starts at Lurgio Middle school on the BHS/RAL campus. Be sure to wear white for maximum color effect (you will be blasted with food safe colorful powder). All funds raised from this event will go back into our schools!

Destination Imagination - PWS heads to Global Finals
Good Luck to the teams heading to Global Finals in Knoxville, TN next week.  Lurgio is so proud to be represented by two teams this year - Eat your Greens and The Sit Down Comedians.  We would also like to thank their mentors and team managers, Linda Jacobs; Marie Russell, Mandy Bechert and Kim Blaine who volunteered their time to mentor and facilitate these kids since last September.  We wish them well in Knoxville.

Guidance Corner
Donna LaRue, MA, MLADC, LCMHC, RAL Guidance Counselor, posts a weekly, helpful parenting newsletter article, as well as other relevant material on her website. Claudette Stone, RAL Behavior Specialist, posts helpful information about executive functioning skills, which are developmental, meaning that each of these skills develop with age, and not on a set schedule. Jack Slatoff Ph.D. is a retired clinical child psychologist with over 55 years of practice in southern New Hampshire.  Specializing in therapy for adolescents and consultation with their parents, Dr. Slatoff has been a psychological consultant for the Bedford School District for 35 years.  He continues to consult weekly at Ross A. Lurgio Middle School, and he now writes a weekly column for our news: Ask Dr. Jack [LINK].

Bicycle Rodeo - June 3 from 10:00 to 2:00
The Bedford Police and Fire Departments will be hosting their annual Bicycle Rodeo on June 3 from 10:00 to 2:00 in the parking lot of the Bedford Mall. Police and Fire Department personnel will be on hand to provide bicycle and motorcycle demonstrations while educating participants about bicycle safety.

BeBold Speaker Event - May 22 at 7pm

Do you or your child have a sports injury and need pain medication?  Do you know what questions your doctor should be asking you about pain medications and pain management?  What kinds of substance abuse cases are our Doc’s seeing especially involving teens?  Is alcohol or marijuana a problem?  Has anything changed regarding pain meds and management?  YOU need to know this information to keep you and your family healthy and safe.  Learn about these topics and more at BeBOLD’s (Bedford - Building Our Lives Drug-free) monthly Speaker Series Event on Monday, May 22nd from 7-8pm at the Bedford Public Library in the McAllaster Room.

  • Greg Baxter, MD, Emergency Medicine, Senior VP of Medical Affairs & Chief Medical Officer of Elliot Health System.
  • Steve Loosigian, DO, Director of the Hospitalist Program and President of Medical Staff at Elliot Health System.

This presentation, followed by a question and answer session, will be moderated by Chief John Bryfonski, Bedford Police Department and BeBOLD Vice President.

COMMUNITY MEETING - Join the PTG and Superintendent Chip McGee for our annual "Year in Review" community forum on Tuesday, May 23rd @ 9:30 at BCTV (10 Meetinghouse Road). There will be discussion and Q&A following a brief presentation. This is a great opportunity to hear about district highlights from the school year! Light refreshments will be served and your young children are welcome to attend. Email Lisa Nash at with your questions and topic suggestions.

Take the hassle out of BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLY shopping. The Bedford PTG is partnering with SchoolKidz, a Staples Company, to offer pre-ordered, grade level specific, school supply kits for students. Kits are available for students entering grades K-8. Order forms will be coming home in backpacks by May 19th. You can also order online at and enter your school’s account number. Lurgio's account number is 34344. NOTE: When ordering, be sure to select the kit for the grade your child will be entering in the fall. All orders are due by June 9th. Kits will be delivered directly to your child’s classroom prior to the first day of school. Please contact with any questions.

We’re excited to invite you to a PTG Community Night at the New Hampshire Fisher Cats as they take on the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday, May 25th at 6:35PM. Atlas Fireworks following the game and no school on Friday! Join us for some great family fun at the ballpark!! Tickets are only $9/per person (regularly $12/pp). To order tickets, download order form and return to your school office by Wednesday, May 17th.

Adaptive Lacrosse Clinic
A BHS Senior, Cormac McCarthy, will be holding an Adaptive Lacrosse Clinic for students with special needs in grades K-12.  Cormac is a captain on the BHS lacrosse team and would like to share his knowledge and love for the game with Bedford students who have special needs.  The clinic will be held on Saturday, May 13th from 9:00-10:00 AM on the BHS turf field (BHS gym, if raining).  There will be adult supervisors and BHS student coaches present.  Please take a look at THIS FLYER for more information.  If you have any questions, and to RSVP (by May 12th), please email Cormac McCarthy at  (Please provide your child's name and grade.)

Bedford Food Pantry – Items Needed for Children
Food Insecurity is a growing concern across the nation and right here in our own backyard.  Nearly 350 adults and children in Bedford qualify for food stamps and more than 167 families in Bedford meet the income standards for the government’s free school lunch program.

In light of these numbers, the Bedford Food Pantry has started a new program, School Lunch Plus, to provide students in Bedford who face food insecurity two lunches each weekend (with complete privacy/anonymity).  In order to provide two lunches for each student in need, the Food Pantry is looking for donations of these specific items.  

If you are able to donate these items (these are ongoing donations), please bring them by the Bedford Food Pantry at the Bedford Presbyterian Church, 4 Church Road, Bedford, NH. Parents/guardians, please contact the school guidance counselor or school nurse if you would like your child to participate in this program.

UPDATED 2017-2018 School Calendar
There is one change in the calendar and the updated 2017/18 calendar is now attached 2017-18 School Calendar. The first day of school for students is Tuesday, August 29.

BHS Summer Course Registration
If you elected to take one of the Summer In Writing courses (Enrichment or Hybrid Enrichment), please register for summer school! This is the second step of registration, after selecting a summer course during course selection in February. Course dates, times, payment information, and the online registration form can be found here.

Registration for BASE Camp (a week-long orientation program at BHS) is also live. This summer, BASE Camp will be the week of 7/31-8/4. Please visit the BASE Camp website for more information.
