Lurgio News for December 16, 2016

December 16, 2016

Dear Parents,
Those who braved the cold weather to come to the Lurgio Winter Concert last evening were treated to a spectacular experience. I was so proud of our student musicians and their directors as they delivered a blockbuster performance.  Enjoy the picture of the show’s finale in which our entire band and chorus performed together.
There is more fun for our students at our annual Winter Dance. The dance is this evening from 6PM to 9PM. Please use the circle in front of Lurgio to drop off your students. Also, with the current frosty weather, please take a moment prior to the dance to make a plan for pickup for your student.

Dec. 23 -  Jan. 2

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.” The Cub will be announced in the Lurgio News.

This week’s Cub is Neil Guttman from pod 8-North. Neil is a super helpful student who is always willing to help a teacher or fellow student in need. His teachers describe him as polite, courteous, and a please to be around. Thank you Neil, for being such a positive part of our Lurgio school community!

Lurgio’s Season of Giving
Lurgio is collecting food items and $1 from every student to make holiday food baskets for families in need in the Bedford community. Please check with your student to find out their assigned food item. Students are asked to also bring in $1 to help pay for turkeys for the families. Please have your student bring food items and $1 to homeroom by Monday 12/19. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

Book Buzz
This week’s Book Buzz comes from a Happy Book Swapper and Albus Dumbledore:

It was a Fan Club-Books for Breakfast Holiday Book Swap Party today! The most swapped book was J.K. Rowling's Quidditch Through the Ages. If you need a gift idea, this is clearly the one to buy! Surely it is the most checked-out book in the Hogwarts Library, and a volume no Quidditch player or Harry Potter fan should be without! If you have ever asked yourself where the Golden Snitch came from, how the Bludgers came into existence, or why the Wigtown Wanderers have pictures of meat cleavers on their robes, you need Quidditch Through the Ages.

Potential Boys Volleyball Club
Student Council is researching the idea of having a Boys Volleyball Team or Club. Boys, check out the link below to let us know if you’re interested. We look forward to starting this process and receiving your feedback. The form will be available until Friday, December 16th.

Eating breakfast at school helps children perform better.  Studies show that children who eat breakfast regularly are less likely to be overweight and have a better quality of nutrient intake.
We serve breakfast daily at Ross A. Lurgio Middle School between 8:15-8:50 am. A complete Grab N Go breakfast is offered for $1.25.  Students may use their lunch account to purchase a Grab N Go breakfast. Options include breakfast sandwiches, whole grain muffins, bagels, and pancakes, just to name a few. All breakfasts include a variety of fresh fruit and low-fat milk.

Executive Functioning Skills:  The “Air Traffic Control” of our brains.  RAL is piloting a new curriculum this year to help students identify and strengthen these very important “life skills.” An overview of the program is available on the Behavior Specialist’s website:   Ms. Stone, Behavior Specialist

Over the last week in Academic Support we have introduced the Executive Functioning skill of Flexibility, which “refers to the ability to revise plans in the face of obstacles, setbacks, new information, or mistakes.”  (Dawson & Guare, 256)  Being a flexible thinker involves the ability to think in a different way than you usually do, and being open to other people’s opinions and methods.  It entails trying a new system after you determine that your old one is no longer effective.   For more information, click Skill of the Week:  Flexibility
