Lurgio News for September 23, 2016

LURGIO NEWS
September 23, 2016

Dear Students and Parents,

It is hard to believe that we are already a full month into the school year.  There is much to look forward to in coming weeks. The 8th grade will be busy preparing for the Cardigan Trip, while our 7th graders will be getting amped up for their first dance.  The end of the month brings a treat (not trick) for us all as we will will host the seventh running of the Witch Way to the 5K race/walk here at Lurgio.

Thanks,

Ed Joyce
Principal

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.” The Cub will be announced in the Lurgio News.

This week’s Cub is Miles McCombs from pod 7-North. Miles, amidst a din of students in the hallway, Miles stopped to help another student pick-up a pencil case’s contents after the case tumbled out of the student’s locker and its contents spilled across the floor. The kindness of students like Miles is what makes Lurgio Middle School a special place to be!

Parent Pick-up
For the safety of all our students, please remember to follow all of the guidelines for our parent pick-up procedures [click here]. We ask that everyone take particular note of the following:
  1. Only pick up students in the designated lot (closest to the school); do not have students walk down to a different lot.
  2. Please pull all the way forward to the rear school exits on both sides of the pick-up lot.
  3. The main traffic circle is for use by students with physical restrictions and for our athletic dismissals during parent pick-up.
  4. Please do not leave a car unattended in the pick-up lot during afternoon dismissal.
Thank you for your cooperation. With everyone’s help we can make the afternoon pick-up procedure smooth and safe for all our students.

Fan Club Attends Granite State Comic Con
The Lurgio Fan Club is thriving with nearly fifty regular members attending our weekly meetings to discuss their super-fan obsessions. We had a fantastic time celebrating our pop culture interests during our second annual trip to New Hampshire’s own Granite State Comic Con.

Yoga Club
Yoga Club is running for the next three weeks on Thursday mornings from 7:30-8:30 in the RAL Gym. There is limited space. Please click [HERE] if your child would like to join. If you have any questions, please contact Dalyne Villaneuve at dalyne.mail@gmail.com

Cell Phone Use During Lunches
Your students may have excitedly told you about a new procedure at Lurgio Middle School: students may now use their cell phones during their lunch period. We ask that the students use their devices responsibly. Please note: State law restricts the use of photography and video recording in the school setting. Because of this and other privacy concerns, we prohibit students from using their cell phones to take pictures or video of themselves or others (students & staff) while in school. Thank you for your support in reinforcing this important practice as we expand student access to personal electronic devices.

Before School Program
The Lurgio Middle School Bedford School Program is available to all families from 7:30a.m. to 8:30a.m. daily. A one-time fee of $65.00 entitles your child to attend as often as necessary for the entire school year. Participants will be serviced by school staff in a designated area; arrangements for extra help should still be made directly with your child’s teachers.

If your child plans on attending the Before School Program regularly or only occasionally during this school year, please complete the registration form on the reverse side of this letter and return it, along with your payment to the Lurgio Middle School Main Office or the Lurgio Middle School Before School Program by Tuesday, August 26, 2014.  If there is a financial concern, please call the office at 310-9100 and it will be handled confidentially.  Click here to download the Before School Program registration form.

Executive Functioning Skills:  The “Air Traffic Control” of our brains.  RAL is piloting a new curriculum this year to help students identify and strengthen these very important “life skills.” An overview of the program is available on the Behavior Specialist’s website:   Ms. Stone, Behavior Specialist

Skill of the Week:  Over the next few weeks, we will continue working on the skill of Organization.  We are now working on organizing our thoughts.

When we need to communicate ideas, needs, opinions, it is important that our message is clear and can be understood as we intend it.   As students mature and the curriculum becomes more complex and abstract, the ability to frame and order our communications becomes more difficult yet more important.   A very useful, versatile, and FREE website, Lucid Chart for Education, to assist in this process can be found at Skill of the Week: Organization Part 2
