Lurgio News for February 5, 2016

LURGIO NEWS
February 5, 2016

Dear Parents,

During the month of February, Lurgio partners with the Bedford Parent Teacher Group (PTG) to celebrate literacy.  We kicked off the month with an all-day visit from Kate Messner, author of our all-school read, Wake Up Missing.  The day began in the theater, where Kate took all of us behind the scenes and explained her process of writing a novel.  It was fascinating and the students and staff were captivated by her presentation and writing techniques.  When Kate announced that her presentation was over, students and staff let out a disappointed sigh.  This wonderful day was funded completely by the PTG’s Opportunities Reaching Kids program.  We are very grateful.

The author visit is just the beginning of our literacy month, which includes a Barnes and Noble book purchase event and culminates in our all-school Read-a-Thon fundraiser on February 19. See the news item below for more information.

Sincerely,

Ed

Lurgio/PTG Read-a-Thon
Once again this year Lurgio has partnered with the PTG to provide students with a fantastic fundraiser that celebrates and supports literacy at Lurgio and in New England. Please consider sponsoring your child’s participation in the Read-a-Thon day of literacy that will take place on Friday, February 19. This is an all-school, all-day event in which students and staff engage in silent reading and other literacy activities while at school. Sponsorship envelopes with more information will be sent home on Friday, February 12, and we will begin collecting sponsorship donations on Monday, February 15.

In addition to raising funds to support literacy at Lurgio, we have also partnered with the Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF) to collect new and gently-used books for children and families in need. If you’re looking for a way to declutter your bookshelves, please consider sending in unwanted books to school beginning Monday, February 15.

New this year, Barnes & Noble in Manchester is sponsoring our Read-a-Thon by offering a special book sale on Wednesday, February 10. If you head to the Manchester store on Wednesday, mention Lurgio and the Read-a-Thon and a percentage of all your purchases will be donated to support literacy at Lurgio. Remember to stock up on good reading material for the Read-a-Thon!

Don’t forget, the Read-a-Thon Event culminates in an all-school celebration where we will be raffling off Kindles, gift cards, signed novels, and other fantastic prizes. Students earn raffle chances through book and money donations. The more the students bring in, the better their chances to win!

Coed Volleyball Tryouts Begin Wednesday, February 10
Any 7th or 8th grade student interested in trying out for coed volleyball should plan to stay after school on Wednesday, February 10 until 5:30PM. Please bring a t-shirt, a pair of shorts, and sneakers. For more information, visit the Coed Volleyball Website.
