Lurgio News for October 2, 2015

LURGIO NEWS
October 2, 2015

Dear Parents,

Good news on the weather front!  Hurricane Joaquin is pushing off to sea and the weather forecast for Mt. Cardigan next week has greatly improved. The Red and Blue Pods in the 8th grade will leave on Monday for their camping experience and the Green and Gold Pods will depart on Wednesday. This year I am very excited to take campgroup “Charlie” on their Cardigan Experience and looking forward to a great trip.  I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the parent volunteers, teachers, staff, and administration for all of the time and energy they have given to this trip.  Without them, this trip would not be possible.

Thank you,

Ed

Dear Parents,

Ed

RAL Cub of the Week
Lurgio Middle School is starting a new tradition with the 2015/2016 academic year. Each week, teachers will nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.” The Cub will be announced in the Lurgio News.

This week’s Cub of the Week winner is Ben Westbrook from pod 7 South for displaying overly kind and selfless acts towards his teachers and classmates. Congratulations, Ben!

PTG Supports Cardigan
Many thanks to the PTG volunteers who went above and beyond with their help in organizing the food for the 8th Grade Mount Cardigan trip. Volunteers helped pick up the food from Sam’s Club, deliver it to Lurgio and distribute it to the campgroups. Without this kind of generous contribution of time and effort, we would not be able to pull of such an extraordinary trip for our students. Special thanks to Lynne Natale, Sally Thomas and Vivien Lin who organized the volunteers and donated their own time to the cause.

Media Center Resouces
Lurgio’s Library Media Generalist, Mrs. Snow, invites you to visit the Digital Resources and Databases website and explore the variety of resources available to the Lurgio Middle School Community 24/7. Username and password for these resources is “lurgio”.

These databases are the kind of quality resources that the Library Media Center strives to provide the students of Lurgio Middle School as Mrs. Snow works to support the RAL curriculum, promotes information literacy and digital citizenship, and spreads the love of reading.

BHS/RAL Traffic Pattern
Thank you to everyone for your patience as we adjust to the new traffic pattern at Bedford High School and Lurgio Middle School.  We made the change to improve safety for all students, staff, parents, and visitors, especially pedestrians.

We ask drivers to follow the new rules on campus to ensure our pedestrians' safety.
  • Please use the parent pick up/drop off area from 7:30a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Do not use the central loop at that time.
  • Please yield to pedestrians at all times when on campus.
  • Please take turns at the main intersections in order to avoid delays and backups.
In addition, we recognize that the flow of traffic has created several bottlenecks.  As we are working on ways to relieve that pressure, we are asking for two things.
  1. Please be patient.  We will not be making any adjustments for at least two weeks as people become accustomed to the changes.
  2. Please give us your feedback.  If you have ideas or suggestions about ways to improve traffic flow, feel free to complete this brief survey.

Lurgio Visitor Parking
Because of the new parent drop-off/pick-up lanes, visitor will not be able to park in the Lurgio upper lot closest to the school during drop-off and pick-up times. This lot is closed for parking from 7:30AM-9:15AM and 2:00PM-3:40PM.

Between 9:15AM and 2:00 PM visitors are invited to park in the drop-off/pick-up lot. Please remember to park parallel to the flow of traffic and to the painted sidewalks indicated by the yellow striping.

For all visitors with disabilities, our handicapped parking has not changed. Please feel free to use the Lurgio handicapped parking spots located at the end of the parent pick-up lot at any time throughout the day.

CARDIGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Bedford PTG has been hard at work helping RAL to prepare for their annual trip to Mt. Cardigan which begins on Monday, October 5th.  Volunteers assisted in helping prep the nurse with her supplies as well as sort and package food for all 400 campers!  Thank you so very much to all of the parents who volunteered their time to help make this a great trip for the students, faculty, and chaperones!

Feel that you missed the opportunity to help?? No worries!  There is still a chance!  If you are able, we are still in need of helpers to welcome both groups home.  Those leaving Bedford on Monday will return to a pizza party on Wednesday and those who depart on Wednesday will have theirs on Friday.  We are in need of more volunteers to help make the party a success.  If you are able to help, please sign up at:

Thank you in advance for your help!

Before School Program
The Lurgio Middle School Bedford School Program is available to all families from 7:30a.m. to 8:30a.m. daily. A one-time fee of $65.00 entitles your child to attend as often as necessary for the entire school year. Participants will be serviced by school staff in a designated area; arrangements for extra help should still be made directly with your child’s teachers.

If your child plans on attending the Before School Program regularly or only occasionally during this school year, please complete the registration form on the reverse side of this letter and return it, along with your payment to the Lurgio Middle School Main Office or the Lurgio Middle School Before School Program by Tuesday, August 26, 2014.  If there is a financial concern, please call the office at 310-9100 and it will be handled confidentially.  Click here to download the Before School Program registration form.

Smarter Balanced Assessment Results
Last spring, schools throughout New Hampshire (and in many other states around the country) administered a new test known as "Smarter Balanced."  The tests, in language arts and math, were taken by students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11.  They are computer-based tests that replaced the annual NECAP assessment.

We have recently learned that the public release of the assessment results will occur in November.  This is a later release date than originally announced.  The delay was caused, in part, by the need to hand score those few tests that were taken using paper and pencil.  The results will include both school and state-wide summaries and individual student level results.  We will send more information as it becomes available to us.

Wrestling Coach Vacancy
Lurgio Middle School currently has a Wrestling Coach vacancy for the Winter Sports season. If you are interested, or know anyone who is, please use this LINK to complete an application.

Guidance Corner
Youth Counselor, Donna LaRue, MA, LADC, LCMHC posts a weekly, helpful parenting newsletter article, as well as other relevant material on her website.

Planning and Decision Making is an important internal asset we'll explore this week.  Keeping these questions in mind when checking in with your teen can help expose them to the language needed as they mature.  Even if met with resistance, continue to search for ways to work this necessary language into discussion!

What steps do you go through before making a decision?
How do you feel about your planning skills?  How can we support and improve them?
What decisions are you currently struggling with? What plans do you need to make?
