BHS/RAL Traffic Pattern
Thank you to everyone for your patience as we adjust to the new traffic pattern at Bedford High School and Lurgio Middle School.  We made the change to improve safety for all students, staff, parents, and visitors, especially pedestrians.

We ask drivers to follow the new rules on campus to ensure our pedestrians' safety.
  • Please use the parent pick up/drop off area from 7:30a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Do not use the central loop at that time.
  • Please yield to pedestrians at all times when on campus.
  • Please take turns at the main intersections in order to avoid delays and backups.
In addition, we recognize that the flow of traffic has created several bottlenecks.  As we are working on ways to relieve that pressure, we are asking for two things.
  1. Please be patient.  We will not be making any adjustments for at least two weeks as people become accustomed to the changes.
  2. Please give us your feedback.  If you have ideas or suggestions about ways to improve traffic flow, feel free to complete this brief survey.

Lurgio Visitor Parking
Because of the new parent drop-off/pick-up lanes, visitor will not be able to park in the Lurgio upper lot closest to the school during drop-off and pick-up times. This lot is closed for parking from 7:30AM-9:15AM and 2:00PM-3:40PM.

Between 9:15AM and 2:00 PM visitors are invited to park in the drop-off/pick-up lot. Please remember to park parallel to the flow of traffic and to the painted sidewalks indicated by the yellow striping.

For all visitors with disabilities, our handicapped parking has not changed. Please feel free to use the Lurgio handicapped parking spots located at the end of the parent pick-up lot at any time throughout the day.

Cardigan Chaperones Needed
We are looking for chaperones for the 41st annual trip to Mt. Cardigan. If you are interested in an all-expenses paid hiking and camping vacation this Fall, please register to be a volunteer by completing our online volunteer form (click here).  The Cardigan trip is an essential part of the academic experience for our 8th grade students. Taking nearly 400 students up a mountain each year is no mean feat and we could not do it without the generous support of our parent and community volunteers.

Before School Program
The Lurgio Middle School Bedford School Program is available to all families from 7:30a.m. to 8:30a.m. daily. A one-time fee of $65.00 entitles your child to attend as often as necessary for the entire school year. Participants will be serviced by school staff in a designated area; arrangements for extra help should still be made directly with your child’s teachers.

If your child plans on attending the Before School Program regularly or only occasionally during this school year, please complete the registration form on the reverse side of this letter and return it, along with your payment to the Lurgio Middle School Main Office or the Lurgio Middle School Before School Program by Tuesday, August 26, 2014.  If there is a financial concern, please call the office at 310-9100 and it will be handled confidentially.  Click here to download the Before School Program registration form.

PTG Corner - Welcome Back!!
The Bedford PTG would like to welcome you back to what hopes to be a fantastic school year for students, parents and teachers.  We are excited to be a part of your students academic experience this year!  If you would like to share in our excitement and find ways to get more involved in our organization and our school, please do not hesitate to reach out.  Any inquires can be sent to Lynne Natale at lynatale@aol.com or Sally Thomas at lurgiosally@gmail.com.

As you wrap up your back to school supply shopping and finish the process of organizing your child for his/her year ahead, please consider lending a hand to our IA teachers (music, FACS, art, tech ed, phys ed, health).  Homeroom teachers receive donations from parents that include tissues, hand sanitizer and clorox wipes for the germs that find their way into their classrooms, but those same runny noses and sticky fingers also visit IA classrooms as well.  Unlike your child's homeroom teacher, IA teachers at one point or another see all 800 students through the year!  Please remember them in your supply shopping and send in those items to the front office with an IA note on them so that we can ensure to deliver them accordingly.

Thank you for your help and your consideration.

Smarter Balanced Assessment Results
Last spring, schools throughout New Hampshire (and in many other states around the country) administered a new test known as "Smarter Balanced."  The tests, in language arts and math, were taken by students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11.  They are computer-based tests that replaced the annual NECAP assessment.

We have recently learned that the public release of the assessment results will occur in November.  This is a later release date than originally announced.  The delay was caused, in part, by the need to hand score those few tests that were taken using paper and pencil.  The results will include both school and state-wide summaries and individual student level results.  We will send more information as it becomes available to us.

Lurgio Crew
The Lurgio Crew program is being offered again this fall. This program will run on Fridays after school from 4:00 – 6:00 at the boathouse in Hooksett starting September 5th through the end of October. There is a $125 registration fee. There is a limit of 27 participants. If you are interested in registering, or have any questions, please contact Lori Ashooh at lashooh@comcast.net.

Communication
As we begin the new school year, the staff at Lurgio would like to express our fundamental belief that clear and consistent communication is essential to fostering and maintaining strong relationships between the staff and the community.

We communicate with students and parents/guardians using a variety of tools. From phone calls and emails to our website and Facebook/Twitter, we consistently strive to make all necessary information public and accessible at all times.  Below are links to some of our communication changes.

Of course, there may always be questions or concerns that we have not anticipated and therefore have not addressed in our public communications. If and when these do arise, we will make every effort to answer and address those questions and concerns quickly and professionally. It is important to understand that it is always best to begin any inquiry at the level of staff most intimately involved with the situation. In order to make any inquiry process as smooth as possible, we ask that you start at the appropriate level of the relevant chain of communication.  Those closest to an issue will be able to give the best information.
