LURGIO NEWS
February 22, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,
If I was to pick a theme for Lurgio this year, I would select “Keep Calm and Carry On.” In the face of early dismissals, weather delays, and an unplanned safety exercise, the 5th Annual Lurgio Read-A-Thon was a phenomenal success. I am so proud that our students donated over 6000 books to support local non-profit groups that support low-income students. Families also donated over $5000 to bolster our library’s collection of novels. I wish you all a nice school break and I look forward to being together again in March.
All my best,
Ed

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cubs of the Week are Kendal Joyce, Aidan McMonigle, Brady Martino, Anna Putney, and Sam Avampato. These students are being honored for going above and beyond the call to enhance the learning in their classroom. They took it upon themselves to develop a read-aloud program for their class that has been well received and a phenomenal success. Congratulations, Kendal, Aidan, Brady, Anna, and Sam! Thank you for helping make Lurgio a wonderful place to learn.
Winter Softball Clinics
Bedford High Varsity Softball is offering free Winter clinics on February 23rd and March 2nd for girls ages 8 to 14. The workouts will be held at St. Elizabeth Seton from 10:30AM to 12:00PM. Anyone interested in learning the sport of softball is invited to attend no matter what skill level you have. The clinics include throwing, fielding, pitching, catching and hitting drills. Please make sure to bring a bat, glove, sneakers and plenty of water. There is no charge for the clinics and they are conducted by the Bedford High School Softball team. Donations to the team will be accepted but are not mandatory. For additional information contact BHS Varsity Softball Coach Jay Brewster @ (603) 488-1333 or e-mail jaypbrewster@gmail.com.
Stand By Me Student Committee
Our Lurgio Stand By Me Student Committee has been working hard on spreading the word about our 30th year of this event for 7th graders in May. On Tuesday they made a formal presentation to the Bedford PTG Executive Board. The Bedford PTG generously donated $2,500 to Stand By Me. Click here for photo of our presentation group.
Fueled by Kids Food Drive Update
This month, Lurgio helped Fueled by Kids collect food items for students and families in need. We brought in 608 jars of peanut butter and 598 boxes of graham crackers! Winning homerooms were Mrs. Turmelle and Mr. Courchesne. All of this food will help provide snacks for about 380 kids in Manchester this break and April break!
Evening Q&A with Dr. Dawn Huebner:
Join us for a 90-minute Q&A on Wednesday, March 13th at 6:30pm at McKelvie Intermediate School with Dr. Dawn Huebner, nationally recognized Psychologist, Parent Coach and author of award-winning mental health books for kids. Dr. Huebner is best known for her What to Do Guides - including What to Do When You Worry Too Much and Outsmarting Worry - which have sold over 1 million copies. Rather than giving a one-size-fits-all talk, Dr. Huebner will be answering audience questions about how to recognize anxiety in kids, how to respond to it, and how to build skills to better manage it. Questions can be submitted in advance, written on a note card that evening (to maintain anonymity) or asked live. This is not a group therapy session but instead an informative Q&A that will leave you with a clearer understanding of anxiety, what parents do that inadvertently feeds it, and how to help your child get on the path to defeating it.
To submit a question for Dr. Huebner in advance, email Priscilla McGinty, School Counselor at McKelvie Intermediate School at mcgintyp@sau25.net, or your child's School Counselor.
To submit a question for Dr. Huebner in advance, email Priscilla McGinty, School Counselor at McKelvie Intermediate School at mcgintyp@sau25.net, or your child's School Counselor.
