LURGIO NEWS
February 15, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Lurgio will be celebrating school spirit and our love of literacy next week through our fifth annual Read-A-Thon fundraising event. The funds raised through this event benefit literacy initiatives and book collections in the Lurgio Media Center. Additionally, we welcome donations of new and gently used children’s books; these books will be given to the Children’s Literacy Foundation to support the literacy needs of low-income children in New Hampshire and Vermont. Last year we raised $5,914.00 and collected 5,673 books. We hope to make even more of an impact this year!
The student council polled our student body to decide on a series of themes for our concurrent Spirit Week. These themes culminate on Friday with Pajama Day and our annual Read-A-Thon Literacy Celebration. I want to thank all parents, students, and teachers in advance for their enthusiasm and support for this event.
All my best,
Ed

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cub of the Week is Jacob Bobar. Jacob is known by his teachers as kind, diligent, and responsible. He is being honored as our cub for going out of his way to assist a classmate with a challenging assignment. Congratulations Jacob. Thank you for helping to make Lurgio a positive learning community.

Lurgio is collecting jars of peanut butter (26 oz) and boxes of graham crackers (info flyer). This is a homeroom competition, and the homeroom in each grade that brings in the most items will earn a pizza party. Collections will run until February 19th. If you have any questions, please see Dr. Fairhurst, Ms. Mazzola or Kate Mikol.
Paper Retriever Recycling
Unfortunately, the green and yellow paper recycling containers (Paper Retriever), which were available to parents/community members have been removed from the district’s schools as this company has gone out of business. Book Buzz
Here’s what Mrs. Parker, our Family and Consumer Science teacher, has to say about Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee:
This sci-fi adventure with the Korean mythology will transport you to new world. Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee is about Min, who is a shape-shifter. The author calls this book a "space opera," and the introduction is by Rick Riordan. So if you are a Rick Riordan fan, you know this will be great. Min wants to escape planet Junju and she disobeys her mother and shape shifts but no one knows it is her. The author layers the action with Korean mythology that I loved learning about. It's a great adventure and fast read!
