Lurgio News for March 5, 2021

LURGIO NEWS

March 5, 2021

Dear Lurgio Families,

I hope you had a restful February vacation. March certainly came in like a lion this week with high winds and arctic temperatures, but I am encouraged by the spring weather that is forecast for next week.

Monday, March 8th marks the first day of Phase 3 of the Bedford School District K-8 reopening plan. It feels a bit like another “first day of school” but we are fortunate to have had the last few Fridays to prepare for this phase with hybrid students. I have included next week’s schedule below for your reference. Pod teachers will communicate class schedules with students so that they know when to be prepared for each subject. Our school time schedule will stay the same next week and students will still see their integrated arts, academic support, resource and world language teachers each day.

On Monday, March 15, our school schedule will pivot to a block schedule and students will rotate through these courses depending on whether it is a silver or red day. Students will also transfer to their next integrated arts rotation (term 5) on this day.

Thank you in advance for your flexibility once again as we head into the home stretch of this extraordinary school year.

Be well,

Ed

Band/Chorus Integrated Arts Opportunity - Time Sensitive

We have an exciting opportunity to bring ensemble music back into the regular school day! As we go forward, we will be offering a new IA for students who are interested in expanding on their music skills while reclaiming some lost time playing/singing together! The class will include playing/singing (following all district protocols). It will also cover additional musical topics, which may include conducting, movie music, score study, composition, composers, keyboard, and more!

If your student is interested in adding this new IA to their daily course schedule, please fill out THIS FORM no later than 7:00PM on Monday, March 8. We intend to start on Monday, March 15 and will share schedules with students on Friday, March 12 so that they can be prepared to attend class the following week. This course will run through the end of the school year, and will replace whatever last two IA term rotations your student would have had otherwise.

School Lunches

The Bedford School District will resume serving lunches on trays rather than in boxes effective March 8, 2021.  The FDA has released their findings that Covid-19 is not transmitted via food preparation.  Click HERE to read the article.

Book Buzz

We talked about graphic novels at Books for Breakfast Cafe this week.

To complement the 8th grade reading “Night” by Elie Wiesel, students should check out these amazing graphic novels:

Drawing on the unique historical sites, archives, expertise, and unquestioned authority of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, New York Times bestselling authors Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colón have created the first authorized and exhaustive graphic biography of Anne Frank. Their account is complete, covering the lives of Anne’s parents, Edith and Otto; Anne's first years in Frankfurt; the rise of Nazism; the Franks' immigration to Amsterdam; war and occupation; Anne's years in the Secret Annex; betrayal and arrest; her deportation and tragic death in Bergen-Belsen; the survival of Anne's father; and his recovery and publication of her astounding diary.

R.J. Palicio is known for her book “Wonder.” In the “White Bird” graphic novel, she offers a backstory. In R. J. Palacio's bestselling collection of stories Auggie & Me, which expands on characters in “Wonder”, readers were introduced to Julian's grandmother, Grandmère. Here, Palacio makes her graphic novel debut with Grandmère's heartrending story: how she, a young Jewish girl, was hidden by a family in a Nazi-occupied French village during World War II; how the boy she and her classmates once shunned became her savior and best friend. Sara's harrowing experience movingly demonstrates the power of kindness to change hearts, build bridges, and even save lives. As Grandmère tells Julian, "It always takes courage to be kind, but in those days, such kindness could cost you everything." With poignant symbolism and gorgeous artwork that brings Sara's story out of the past and cements it firmly in this moment in history, “White Bird” is sure to captivate anyone who was moved by the book “Wonder” or the blockbuster movie adaptation and its message.

Emily H. of 7 East loves the graphic novel Witch Boy by Molly Knox Ostertag. Emily loves the style, action and conflict with a demon who kidnaps.

From the illustrator of the web comic Strong Female Protagonist comes a debut middle-grade graphic novel about family, identity, courage -- and magic. In thirteen-year-old Aster's family, all the girls are raised to be witches, while boys grow up to be shapeshifters. Anyone who dares cross those lines is exiled. Unfortunately for Aster, he still hasn't shifted . . . and he's still fascinated by witchery, no matter how forbidden it might be.When a mysterious danger threatens the other boys, Aster knows he can help -- as a witch. It will take the encouragement of a new friend, the non-magical and non-conforming Charlie, to convince Aster to try practicing his skills. And it will require even more courage to save his family . . . and be truly himself.

Aidan of 8 East continues to read Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama, a graphic novel series.

Humanity has been devastated by the bizarre, giant humanoids known as the Titans. Little is known about where they came from or why they are bent on consuming humanity. Seemingly unintelligent, they have roamed the world killing off humankind for years. For the past century, what's left of mankind has hidden in a giant, three-walled city. People believe their 100-meter-high walls will protect them from the Titans, which are 10 to 20 meters tall. But the sudden appearance of an immense Titan is about to change everything.

Books for Breakfast will meet in person in our Media Center Thursdays at 8:00AM starting March 11, 2021. Come see why we have an appetite for reading!
