Lurgio News for February 19, 2021

LURGIO NEWS

February 19, 2021

Dear Lurgio Families,

Next week is our annual Winter (February) Vacation. I hope our students, staff, and their families are able to find some time to rest, relax, and recharge over the coming days. This may be a different “vacation” for many of us, but it is much needed nonetheless.

Please be sure to check the Travel Guidance Reminder under New News below. It is important that the school is notified if your student travels outside of New England so that we can work with you to establish a return-to-school date. You can contact our school nurse, Evelyn Chessie, at chessiee@sau25.net and our attendance line at ralattendance@bedfordnhk12.net. I would encourage students to be proactive and reach out to their teachers as well in an effort to minimize the workload upon their return.

If you are choosing to travel outside of New England, we will be unable to provide concurrent learning opportunities during elective travel quarantine. Instead, your student should utilize Google Classroom and communicate with teachers via email to plan for missed instruction or assignments in the same way they would if they were absent during a typical school year. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines in order to keep our school community safe.

Be well,

Ed

New News

Winter Vacation Travel Guidance Reminder

The Bedford School District continues to follow guidance set by the CDC and NH DPHS and does NOT recommend travel outside the New England states--ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, and CT.

For those who choose to travel outside New England, a 10 day quarantine is required for travel. 10 days begins on the first full day in NH:

Return to NH date + 10 days = quarantine end date, ending at midnight.

(see below for exceptions to quarantine).

-Contact your school nurse (Ms. Chessie: chessiee@sau25.net) with your travel plans so that a return-to-school date may be determined for your student.

-Documentation of positive test results within the previous 90 days prior to your student’s return to NH must be resubmitted if a quarantine waiver is being requested.

NH DHHS Exceptions to Travel Quarantine (1/11/2021)

The following people do NOT need to quarantine after high-risk travel:

1. Persons who are 14 days beyond the second dose of their COVID-19 vaccine (i.e., 14 days after full vaccination).

2. Persons who are within 90 days of a prior SARS-CoV-2 infection that was diagnosed by PCR or antigen testing (if a person had a previous infection that was more than 90 days prior, then they are still subject to travel quarantine). Such persons, however, still need to monitor themselves for symptoms of COVID-19 daily, practice social distancing, avoid social and other group gatherings, always wear a face mask when around other people, and practice good hand hygiene at all times.

If at any time post travel you become symptomatic or ill, please continue to follow Covid precautions, contact your PCP and test for COVID per protocol.

Spring Sports at Lurgio

With the winter sports season behind us, we have already started planning for spring sports at Lurgio. During the spring season, we typically offer softball, baseball, golf, coed track & field, and tennis. At this point, we intend to participate in interscholastic competition within the Tri-County League and will continue to adhere to safety and mitigation measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

In order for students to participate, they will need to have a recent physical exam on file with the school nurse as well as an ImPACT concussion baseline test (baseball/softball only). Practices start at the end of March/beginning of April and more information will be sent to all families after February break.

Be sure to check out the January/February issue of the Lion’s Den.

Lurgio Phase 2 Reopening

Below is a short summary of the changes that will take place during Phase 2 and beyond:

-Physical distancing will be reduced to three feet in hallways and classrooms on Fridays.

-Physical distancing in the dining hall will be three feet every school day Monday through Friday.

-Distance learning will no longer occur on Fridays when all hybrid students are present in the school building.

-Fully remote students will still receive remote classes on Fridays.

-We will not be able to accommodate changing modes of instruction (Hybrid to Remote or -Remote to Hybrid) during Phase 2 and beyond.

-From Monday through Thursday, school will operate on an alternating schedule in order to accommodate approximately 50% capacity with six-foot distancing in classes and hallways and three-foot distancing at lunches.

-On Fridays, school will operate at roughly 80% in-person capacity, with the remaining 20% of students enrolled in the fully remote option.

-All hybrid students, regardless of last name, are expected to attend in-person on Fridays.

-Students will sit four to a table at our circular dining hall tables with installed plexiglass dividers, which provides three feet of space between students during lunches.

-All students are permitted to utilize bus transportation, but it is possible that some families may make alternate plans so that the number of bus riders is reduced.

-Students will spread out among seats on the bus as much as possible in order to encourage physical distancing.

Weekly Meetings

We are still looking for members to join the Yearbook Club! We will meet with interested students on Fridays in the Media Center from 8:00-8:30 on their in person day. We are looking for students that are interested in photography and want to help create content for the 2020-2021 Lurgio yearbook. Students will attend meetings on their in-school day. Remote students should contact Mrs. Dennis dennisd@sau25.net or Mrs. Manley manleyj@sau25.net if they are interested in attending virtually.

Intramural Sports

Intramural sports will be held on Wednesdays for A-K students and Thursdays for L-Z students. Participants will engage in a variety of activities and sports from 3:15 to 4:00 on these days. Intramurals will primarily be held outside. It is important that students dress warm and wear a mask while attending. If you have any questions please feel free to email Mr. Gookin at gooking@sau25.net. Students attending will meet Mr. Gookin in the RAL cafeteria at 3:15. Any Lurgio student (remote or hybrid) is welcome to join.

Concurrent Learning

The Bedford School District continues to adapt our practices to support the needs of learners. As you are aware, the state of New Hampshire has seen increased positive COVID-19 cases. As a result we have had more students who have been required to quarantine and are unable to attend school in person. To support these students, our K-8 schools will offer synchronous opportunities for students to connect with their teachers. For some, this will be in the form of concurrent learning.

Concurrent learning occurs when students who are receiving instruction in the classroom are joined by their peers who are in a virtual setting. This is more difficult for the teacher to navigate; however, they have been offered training opportunities in order to assist quarantined students who would otherwise not have direct access to their teachers while at home. Please find the expectations for students and parents in THIS document.

Feel free to contact your building leaders and teachers with any questions.

Want to take a trip to Argentina and be immersed in soccer? Definitely try Furia by Yamile Mendez for incredible pace, internal and external tension.

A powerful contemporary YA for fans of The Poet X and I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter set in Argentina, about a rising soccer star who must put everything on the line—even her blooming love story—to follow her dreams. In Rosario, Argentina, Camila Hassan lives a double life. At home, she is a careful daughter, living within her mother’s narrow expectations, in her rising-soccer-star brother’s shadow, and under the abusive rule of her short-tempered father. On the field, she is La Furia, a powerhouse of skill and talent. When her team qualifies for the South American tournament, Camila gets the chance to see just how far those talents can take her. In her wildest dreams, she’d get an athletic scholarship to a North American university. But the path ahead isn’t easy. Her parents don’t know about her passion. They wouldn’t allow a girl to play fútbol—and she needs their permission to go any farther. And the boy she once loved is back in town. Since he left, Diego has become an international star, playing in Italy for the renowned team Juventus. Camila doesn’t have time to be distracted by her feelings for him. Things aren’t the same as when he left: she has her own passions and ambitions now, and La Furia cannot be denied. As her life becomes more complicated, Camila is forced to face her secrets and make her way in a world with no place for the dreams and ambition of a girl like her. Filled with authentic details and the textures of day-to-day life in Argentina, heart-soaring romance, and breathless action on the pitch, Furia is the story of a girl’s journey to make her life her own.

Maybe you want to travel to Thailand? You need to meet Pong in Wish in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat.

A 2021 Newbery Honor Book. A boy on the run. A girl determined to find him. A compelling fantasy looks at issues of privilege, protest, and justice. All light in Chattana is created by one man — the Governor, who appeared after the Great Fire to bring peace and order to the city. For Pong, who was born in Namwon Prison, the magical lights represent freedom, and he dreams of the day he will be able to walk among them. But when Pong escapes from prison, he realizes that the world outside is no fairer than the one behind bars. The wealthy dine and dance under bright orb light, while the poor toil away in darkness. Worst of all, Pong’s prison tattoo marks him as a fugitive who can never be truly free. Nok, the prison warden’s perfect daughter, is bent on tracking Pong down and restoring her family’s good name. But as Nok hunts Pong through the alleys and canals of Chattana, she uncovers secrets that make her question the truths she has always held dear. Set in a Thai-inspired fantasy world, Christina Soontornvat’s twist on Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables is a dazzling, fast-paced adventure that explores the difference between law and justice — and asks whether one child can shine a light in the dark.
