Lurgio News for March 12, 2012

LURGIO NEWS

March 12, 2021

Dear Lurgio Families,

This Friday last year we were all watching current events unfold and trying to predict what was about to happen in our community and the world around us. Little did we know what the next year would bring. That said, having our hybrid students all week felt like a good step towards normal.  I sincerely hope that this is our new normal as we head to the end of the school year.

I also want to let you know that on Monday, March 15th, our school schedule will pivot fully to an alternating block schedule. While most of our Pods already switched their schedules back to blocks this week, our classes that are outside the Pod (Integrated Arts, World Language, Academic Support and Resource) will now also have blocks.  There is more information provided below in our new news section.

As we head into this next phase of learning at Lurgio, I would like to thank parents, teachers, and most of all students for their grace and patience.

Be well,

Ed

New News

School Schedule Change - Monday, March 15

On Monday, March 15, our school schedule will pivot to a block schedule and students will rotate through these courses depending on whether it is a silver or red day. Students will also transfer to their next integrated arts rotation (term 5) on this day.

Any changes (for remote or in-person students) should be updated in PowerSchool prior to Monday, March 15. Students should contact their pod teachers or guidance counselor with any questions they may have about their schedules.

New Hampshire State Testing

This spring, Bedford students will participate in the New Hampshire state-wide assessments. Throughout the state, students in grades 3-8 and 11 take mathematics and English language arts exams. A science test is also given to students in grades 5, 8, and 11. For more information, please click this link.

Spring Sports Information

Be on the lookout next week for an email regarding spring sports registration. During the spring season, we offer softball, baseball, golf, tennis, and track & field. Baseball and softball will start at the end of March and the other sports begin in early April. Students will need to have a current physical on file with the nurse in order to participate.

Destination Imagination

We would like to wish all our teams the best of luck in the Destination Imagination Virtual Tournament this weekend. We are so proud of the 13 Bedford teams who stepped up to the challenge of collaborating and creatively solving challenges virtually! We would also like to thank all of the volunteer Team Managers who facilitated all of the virtual meetings with these students.

Book Buzz

We shared short stories this week at Booked for Breakfast figuring something shorter would be appealing as we settle into our All In RAL world again.

Want to find out more about your favorite authors? Try Flying Lessons and Other Stories edited by Ellen Oh.

Great stories take flight in this adventurous middle-grade anthology crafted by ten of the most recognizable and diverse authors writing today. Newbery Medalist Kwame Alexander delivers a story in-verse about a boy who just might have magical powers; National Book Award winner Jacqueline Woodson spins a tale of friendship against all odds; and Meg Medina uses wet paint to color in one girl’s world with a short story that inspired her Newbery award-winner Merci Suárez Changes Gear. Plus, seven more bold voices that bring this collection to new heights with tales that challenge, inspire, and celebrate the unique talents within us all.

Want to travel to New York City's Harlem and see what it is really like? Try 145th Street by Walter Dean Myers.

On Harlem's 145th Street, things happen that don't happen anywhere else in the world. Get to know Big Joe, who's throwing his own funeral while he's here to enjoy it, and everyone's invited. Meet Kitty and Mack, teens with a love story more real than anything they've ever known. Follow Monkeyman, the quietest kid on the block and the last person you'd expect the Tigros gang to target. And don't miss the block party of the year--the whole neighborhood will be there. From danger and despair to hilarity and joy, literary legend Walter Dean Myers captures every mood and every beat of life in this vibrant Harlem.

Need a graphic novel short story collection? Try: Explorer: The Mystery Boxes by Kazu Kibushi.

Seven clever stories answer one simple question: what’s in the box? Funny, fantastic, spooky, and suspenseful, each of these unique and beautifully illustrated short graphic works revolves around a central theme: a mysterious box and the marvels—or mayhem—inside. Artists include middle school favorites Kazu Kibuishi, Raina Telgemeier (Smile), and Dave Roman (Astronaut Academy), as well as Jason Caffoe, Stuart Livingston, Johane Matte, Rad Sechrist (all contributors to the groundbreaking comics anthology series Flight), and upcoming artist Emily Carroll.

How about a basketball novel in verse? Try Rebound by Kwame Alexander:

From the New York Times bestselling author Kwame Alexander comes Rebound, a dynamic novel in verse and companion to his Newbery Award-winner, The Crossover, illustrated with striking graphic novel panels. Before Josh and Jordan Bell were streaking up and down the court, their father was learning his own moves. In this prequel to Newbery Medal winner The Crossover, Chuck Bell takes center stage, as readers get a glimpse of his childhood and how he became the jazz music worshiping, basketball star his sons look up to. A novel in verse with all the impact and rhythm readers have come to expect from Kwame Alexander, Rebound will go back in time to visit the childhood of Chuck "Da Man" Bell during one pivotal summer when young Charlie is sent to stay with his grandparents where he discovers basketball and learns more about his family's past.

Books for Breakfast will meet in person in our Media Center Thursdays at 8:00AM. Come see why we have an appetite for reading!
