Dear Parents,
Wow! What an incredible week at Cardigan. We had some of the wettest weather in my experience, and at the same time, we had some of the best students. These kids showed an amount of resilience and grit that was truly impressive. Thanks to all the volunteers, teachers, staff members, and families that support this trip. It was another resounding success!
All the best,
Ed Joyce
Principal

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cub are Sam O’Leary, Isabella Raduaozo, and Katelyn Smith. During the week prior to Cardigan, they were extremely helpful to their classmates as they were setting up tents and preparing gear for the trip. Kudos to Sam, Bella, and Katelyn! Thank you for making Lurgio a great place to be!

Lurgio Tech Corner Update
It has come to our attention that parents who have subscribed to receive progress reports through PowerSchool have not found them to be helpful. Unfortunately, this is an old report we cannot customize therefore, it doesn’t give accurate standards based grading information. We strongly recommend that parents NOT subscribe to this report and to log into the PowerSchool portal to check grades there on a regular basis. It also is much easier to view the information on a computer screen rather than a mobile device.

BHS/RAL Equestrian Club
The New Hampshire High School Equestrian Teams (NHHSET) organization as stated on their website (https://www.nhhset.org/) is "dedicated to promoting and organizing equestrian competition in high school athletic or activity programs. NHHSET will support, challenge and offer recognition to the dedicated students who both physically and mentally pursue the challenge of the equine sport." Bedford High School has competed with a High School Equestrian Club for many years. The state has opened up the registration to middle school students again this year. The Bedford High School and Ross A Lurgio Middle School are once again teaming up to offer the opportunity for student equestrians to compete in NHHSET for the 2018-2019 school year.
The competition is comprised of three meets at the district level in the spring and culminates in the State Championship in May. Students of all riding levels are able to compete in all disciplines. Students compete individually and accumulate points toward a team final placement. Students are able to register as a rider or a spirit member. Riders must own or lease a horse in order to compete. Spirit members participate by working with the riding members to prepare horses for competition as well as "The Grooming Box Challenge" and a Practicum Experience. Participants will practice with the team coach in the winter on patterns as determined by the state board. The meets are run by parent volunteers and as such parents are required to volunteer at least one Saturday meet in the spring. Rider and Spirit registration begins December 1, 2018. Cost for Rider participation was $175 and Spirit participation was $20 last year. The cost structure is still being finalized at the state level.
Kathy Blake (blakek@sau25.net) is the club advisor. Please contact Kathy Blake for further information. Registration will close at the beginning of January. All documents and money orders must go through Kathy Blake in order to be part of the Bedford High School Club Team.
The club will begin meeting in early October. There will be a parent meeting to answer questions in early October as well.
Witch Way Fun Run
Fall is here and the planning for annual Witch Way race is well under way. We have made some major changes to this annual event! One of those exciting changes is the race has been renamed to the Witch Way Fun Run. This run will be on a new shorter 2 mile course (course map here) that will include a variety of Halloween-themed pit-stops stocked with candy and prizes along the way. We will no longer formally be timing the race but we will have a clock available at the start/finish line for those of you who are interested in their time.
The race will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2018 and starts at 10am at Lurgio Middle School. Click here for more information: http://www.sau25.net/ww5k. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Donna Dennis - dennisd@sau25.net.
Traffic Reminders
Traffic at dismissal continues to improve, and we would like to thank all parents for following safe driving practices even in the frustration of our most high-traffic times. Today was our most efficient dismissal, with all buses making it up the hill prior to the final bell of the day!
As a reminder, please continue to follow these practices any time you are driving on campus:
- Refrain from cell phone use, even when idling.
- Load and unload only in the designated area marked by the double green areas.
- Pull all the way forward in both lanes of the pick-up/drop-off area.
- Mind the speed limit on campus (15 MPH), and remember that slower is better when student pedestrians are present.
- Reserve the use of the traffic circle for students with mobility issues (wheelchair, crutches, etc...)
- Feel free to smile and wave at your friendly outdoor duty teachers!
By continuing to follow these guidelines, we can continue to see improved traffic flow and increasingly efficient dismissals.
