Lurgio News for October 19, 2018

LURGIO NEWS
October 19, 2018
Dear Parents,

I have earth-shaking news from Lurgio. We now have a seismograph. Through the generous funding of the Bedford Education Foundation, Lurgio has formed a partnership with the Boston College Educational Seismology Project and Weston Observatory. In the past week since the installation of the instrument, we have detected earthquakes around the world as well as the impact of local weather. This partnership allows us to have our students experience scientific research and earth science events in real time.

To learn more, check out the Lurgio seismograph website:

All the best,

Ed Joyce
Principal

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cub is Julia Waldman. Julia is recognized this week for her kindness, empathy and generosity. At lunch this week, she went out her way to show share some time with a fellow classmate on their birthday. This act made this student feel welcome and helped to make it a special day. Congratulations Julia. Thank you for making Lurgio a wonderful place.

On Tuesday, October 23rd we will host a halloween movie night from 6PM to 8PM. This bring your own chair/blanket event will be held in our dining hall. The movie shown will be selected by the students through a vote and announced next week.

On Thursday, October 25, we will host our first dance, the Witch Way Glow Dance. Admission is $5, and concessions will be available for purchase. There will be great music and decorations, and the students are encouraged to wear white as the black lights will make them fluorescent.

All funds raised through these events will bolster three important efforts: supporting Camp Allen, enhancing our classroom sound systems, and making the seating in the dining hall more flexible and inclusive.

Weekly Features

Book Buzz

After enjoying a visit from Jessie Janowitz, author of the book The Doughnut Fix, on Wednesday, our Books for Breakfast crew was simply a-buzz about books this morning.

Livia C. from 7-South:
I wanted to share Gregory McGuire's book Egg and Spoon. This is the same author who wrote Wicked, and this is like a fairytale too. Main character Elena lives in Russia and there is no food. But then a train arrives with a ton of food, money and a noble family that has a wealthy girl Elena's age named Ekaterina. So then all these puzzling pieces get put in motion for readers to solve. It's a great mystery to read, serious and funny too.
Cam M. from 7 South:
I wanted to share Portal Through the Pond by David Anderson. The plot is that the grandfather has been missing for 9 years, the grandmother has died, and their house is going on the market. A note is found about finding something in the pond. This means that the grandfather could be alive if they go through a portal to find him. But the mom wants to drain the pond. This book is so suspenseful. Christy's classmate falls into the pond and she sets up a rescue team to find him. You have to read this, go through the portal and find out what happens.
Nick B. from 7 East:
I wanted to share the James Patterson series called Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life. There is a movie of it too and the books are so funny. There are 10 in the series and I have read all of them because they make me laugh out loud. In this book, Rafe is the main character trying to survive middle school and he decides he wants to break every code of conduct rule the school has. If you want a really funny book this is for you.

Lurgio Tech Corner Update

In order to avoid confusion, Lurgio has had to disable the progress reports that have been available through PowerSchool. We are working closely with PowerSchool to find a solution to this report as well as the view that is on the mobile app. In the meantime, if you wish to view your students’ progress, please log into PowerSchool on your computer or chromebook.

BHS/RAL Equestrian Club

The New Hampshire High School Equestrian Teams (NHHSET) organization as stated on their website (https://www.nhhset.org/) is "dedicated to promoting and organizing equestrian competition in high school athletic or activity programs. NHHSET will support, challenge and offer recognition to the dedicated students who both physically and mentally pursue the challenge of the equine sport."  Bedford High School has competed with a High School Equestrian Club for many years. The state has opened up the registration to middle school students again this year. The Bedford High School and Ross A Lurgio Middle School are once again teaming up to offer the opportunity for student equestrians to compete in NHHSET for the 2018-2019 school year.

The competition is comprised of three meets at the district level in the spring and culminates in the State Championship in May. Students of all riding levels are able to compete in all disciplines. Students compete individually and accumulate points toward a team final placement. Students are able to register as a rider or a spirit member. Riders must own or lease a horse in order to compete. Spirit members participate by working with the riding members to prepare horses for competition as well as "The Grooming Box Challenge" and a Practicum Experience. Participants will practice with the team coach in the winter on patterns as determined by the state board. The meets are run by parent volunteers and as such parents are required to volunteer at least one Saturday meet in the spring. Rider and Spirit registration begins December 1, 2018. Cost for Rider participation was $175 and Spirit participation was $20 last year. The cost structure is still being finalized at the state level.
Kathy Blake (blakek@sau25.net) is the club advisor. Please contact Kathy Blake for further information. Registration will close at the beginning of January. All documents and money orders must go through Kathy Blake in order to be part of the Bedford High School Club Team.
