LURGIO NEWS
October 12, 2018

Dear Parents,
On Wednesday we had our kick-off assembly for the Witch Way Fun Run. Using the suggestions of our student council executive board, we have made some great changes to our annual fun run. This year the course will be two miles and will have loads of fun pit stops for the runners to trick-or-trot through. We hope that this shorter distance with its frequent fun stops will make the event appropriate for all ages. Strollers are welcome at this family friendly event that aims to put the FUN back in the RUN!
If you would like to participate in this exciting event, please register early to get the early registration discount. Early registration is open until Friday, October 19. To add to the draw of early registration, if 300 student, parent, and/or staff runners are registered by next Friday, I will let the students pick out a school-appropriate costume for me to wear as I run the course.
Please see the Witch Way stories in the New News section below and consider joining us at our fun run fundraiser.
All the best,
Ed Joyce
Principal

Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cub is Ben Chandonette. Ben was an all-star on the Mt. Cardigan trip last week. On the mountain, he went above and beyond the call to assist his classmates on the trip. Congratulations Ben! You are truly a team player and your actions make Lurgio a great plan to be.

Witch Way Week Events
We have a ton of fun events planned for our students at lunch and after school during the week prior to the Witch Way Fun Run. On Tuesday, October 23rd we will host a halloween movie night from 6PM to 8PM. This bring your own chair/blanket event will be held in our dining hall. The movie shown will be selected by the students through a vote and announced next week.
On Thursday, October 25, we will host our first dance, the Witch Way Glow Dance. Admission is $5, and concessions will be available for purchase. There will be great music and decorations, and the students are encouraged to wear white as the black lights will make them fluorescent.
All funds raised through these events will bolster three important efforts: supporting Camp Allen, enhancing our classroom sound systems, and making the seating in the dining hall more flexible and inclusive.

Book Buzz
Jessie Janowitz, author of the book The Doughnut Fix, will be here Wednesday, October 17 to present Writers Workshops, and we recently raffled off two copies of her book. The lucky winners were Court McCombs of 7S and Mia Park of 7N.
This week, the students are buzzing about Erin Hunter’s Warriors Series. Here’s what Cam M. from 7S has to say about the series:
This series is amazing. I also love the website that goes with the series about cats who live in the wild and work to survive. I always check the website for new books. Cats go from apprentice to warrior and live on their own. It's all action and adventure and great because it's about animals. There are clans among them. Erin Hunter puts the reader right into the action and gives each character's perspective. There are different points of view for the action and I like that. There are seekers, survivors, and warriors. If you like animals and adventure, this series is for you. There are games on the website too.

Guidance Corner
This week we are sharing an article from the Search Institute titled “Youth Programs”. In the past, our school district has asked students for their feedback related to their perceived availability of 40 positive assets in their lives. Because we recognize the benefits of structured youth programs, as outlined in the attached article, our school has worked to create clubs and activities that suit our students. We offer leadership opportunities outside of academic rigors with before and after school groups including Student Council, Coalition for Bedford Youth, Technology Student Association, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and Life of a Lion, among others. Click here to review the full article.
Lurgio Tech Corner Update
We need your help… we are noticing an increase in students not being prepared with their charged chromebook every day. Any help and reminders you could give at home would be greatly appreciated. We do track student loaner chromebook usage and have a plan in place to work with them to be better prepared - click here to read more. Any questions, please contact Donna Dennis dennisd@sau25.net.

BHS/RAL Equestrian Club
The New Hampshire High School Equestrian Teams (NHHSET) organization as stated on their website (https://www.nhhset.org/) is "dedicated to promoting and organizing equestrian competition in high school athletic or activity programs. NHHSET will support, challenge and offer recognition to the dedicated students who both physically and mentally pursue the challenge of the equine sport." Bedford High School has competed with a High School Equestrian Club for many years. The state has opened up the registration to middle school students again this year. The Bedford High School and Ross A Lurgio Middle School are once again teaming up to offer the opportunity for student equestrians to compete in NHHSET for the 2018-2019 school year.
The competition is comprised of three meets at the district level in the spring and culminates in the State Championship in May. Students of all riding levels are able to compete in all disciplines. Students compete individually and accumulate points toward a team final placement. Students are able to register as a rider or a spirit member. Riders must own or lease a horse in order to compete. Spirit members participate by working with the riding members to prepare horses for competition as well as "The Grooming Box Challenge" and a Practicum Experience. Participants will practice with the team coach in the winter on patterns as determined by the state board. The meets are run by parent volunteers and as such parents are required to volunteer at least one Saturday meet in the spring. Rider and Spirit registration begins December 1, 2018. Cost for Rider participation was $175 and Spirit participation was $20 last year. The cost structure is still being finalized at the state level.
Kathy Blake (blakek@sau25.net) is the club advisor. Please contact Kathy Blake for further information. Registration will close at the beginning of January. All documents and money orders must go through Kathy Blake in order to be part of the Bedford High School Club Team.
The club will begin meeting in early October. There will be a parent meeting to answer questions in early October as well.
