Special Note: Cardigan Postponement

 Dear 8th Grade Lurgio Families,

I write to share that the 8th Grade Mount Cardigan Trip will be postponed until the Spring. Having lived with the constraints of the mitigation measures we have been upholding at school for the last three weeks, we now see how these mitigation measures would affect the curriculum and our trip. We believe our best bet for providing a successful and meaningful experience is to move the trip to the late Spring.  By moving the trip to 2021, we believe that we can better engage the students in the curriculum and provide an experience that better upholds the spirit and tradition of Cardigan.

As the parent of four children who have all gone to “the mountain,” I know first hand the value of this experience.  Now more than ever, it is important for our children to unplug and be active.  At the very least, Cardigan provides that for our students. At its best, this eighth grade tradition can be a transformative experience. While hiking Cardigan this past Saturday, I ran into two former students at the summit who were eager to share their experiences in eighth grade with me even twenty years later.

While it is unfortunate that we will not be taking the Cardigan trip in the Fall of 2020, we are still committed to engage our 8th graders in the outdoor experience and team building that is the hallmark of this great tradition. More details will follow as we approach the spring, but please understand that this plan is fluid. We will make adjustments as appropriate if health considerations become more stringent in the coming months.

Best,

Ed Joyce
