This week our 8th graders were treated to a visit from guest seismologist from Boston College’s Weston Observatory. Ms. Moulis introduced herself to our students and spoke to them about the seismological activity that she researches and monitors at the Weston Observatory. Cub of the Week
Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the “Cub of the Week.”
This week’s Cubs of the Week is Lucas Mack. Lucas is a kind, thoughtful, and respectful student. He is always helping out both students and staff whenever there is a need. We are very lucky to have such an amazing young man and role model at our school! Congratulations Lucas. Thank you for making Lurgio a wonderful place to learn.
New Main Entrance
A new main entrance door was installed at Lurgio over the holiday break. Now, when you come to visit us, you will enter the main office directly from the main entrance foyer. This is stage one of a two-part renovation to improve the security of our entrance.
Guidance Corner
Parent Involvement in Schooling is our featured article this week. This external asset is one of 40 Developmental Assets created by the Search Institute. In Bedford, our middle school has worked with the Search Institute since 1996. For over twenty years we have focused our attention on creating opportunities for students to develop positive assets both internally and externally. This article does a great job of starting parents and children thinking (and hopefully talking) about ways parents can stay active in their children’s schooling. Even when these young teens act like they don’t want you around, I can say, with no exception, they are proud of you.
Coed Volleyball
Coed Volleyball tryouts will begin on Monday, February 4th, immediately following dismissal. All students in grades 7 and 8 are welcome to try out. Please fill out the sign-up form if you wish to participate. Students must submit a PRINTED copy of the athletic paperwork and a recent physical form to the coach in order to play. Please stay tuned to announcements regarding an informational meeting and for scheduled ImPACT testing sessions.

RAL Kitchen News:
The breakfast program will be featuring a delicious and nutritious strawberry banana smoothie. Loaded with fresh fruit and yogurt this smoothie will provide lots of energy and protein to start the school day off with a bang. In addition to breakfast combo meals, the kitchen will be offering a homemade chocolate zucchini muffin. This lovely, healthy treat will keep you feeling satisfied with its rich and delicious flavor. It's filled with real cocoa and a great way to get some vegetables in for breakfast. They are just so tasty! Don't miss out on these healthy, wholesome new breakfast items.
The hot lunch program is featuring an exciting, healthy meal on Thursday the 17th. The kitchen will be preparing Stir Fry Teriyaki Bowls! Choose from chicken or beef strips marinated in our own teriyaki sauce, topped with garlic ginger veggies, bean sprouts and scallions on a bed of brown rice. This tasty meal is too good to pass up. Come down to the cafe and try it out!

Lurgio Tech Corner
Over the recent vacation, we have made some changes to student’s school google accounts. Due to a law enacted by the NH Legislation (to view click HERE - section V), school districts are required to review and approve all online apps and extensions for student use to ensure they comply with State and Federal data privacy guidelines and laws. As a result, only approved apps/extensions that are needed for school use will be allowed to be installed with a school google account. Terry Bullard, the District Tech Director has already approved several tools, apps and extensions. The District will continue to add to the approved list when necessary. We know that this is a change from current practice and appreciate your understanding during this transition. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email Donna Dennis at dennisd@sau25.net.

Stand By Me- Hannaford Fundraiser
The Stand By Me Hannaford fundraiser will run from 12/23/18-1/19/19. All proceeds generated by the book bin at the Bedford Hannaford (Jenkins Road) will be donated to the Stand By Me program.
How it works:
The book bin located at the front of the store inside, and people donate used books for others to purchase. Every two weeks, Hannaford donates all of the proceeds from the book bin to a different cause.
How to help:
DONATE BOOKS ‐ Drop off books to the bin that you would like to donate. Both adult and children books are accepted.
PURCHASE BOOKS ‐ Please take a few minutes to browse the used books in the Hannaford Book Bin during the first two weeks of January. It is an inexpensive way to build your child’s library or to find a good book for yourself!
PTG Corner
Principals’ Winter Reading Night - Register by January 18
Dress in your PJ’s, bring a blanket and come listen to all the Bedford Principal’s read you a story. This fun filled family event will be held on Thursday, January 24TH at the McKelvie Intermediate School cafeteria. Choose between two session times 4:30pm or 6:30pm, click HERE for more details. Barnes and Noble Event
Save the date for PTG’s event to be held January 25th – 26th at the Barnes and Noble Manchester location. See amazing student art projects from all Bedford Schools, enjoy a performance by the McKelvie Music Department and listen to stories read by Bedford’s elementary teachers. Hannaford Helps Reusable Bag Program
Hannaford on Kilton Road has chosen Bedford PTG to be the beneficiary of the Community Bag program in January. For every green Community reusable bag purchased at Hannaford, on KILTON ROAD, in January, the PTG will receive a $1.00 donation.
Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grants Program
The Bedford PTG is the proud recipient of the Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grants Program funded by Harvard Pilgrim. This $500 grant was awarded due to the generous nomination of a Bedford family.
About the Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grants Program: To commemorate those Harvard Pilgrim members who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, Harvard Pilgrim and its Foundation created the Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant program. This program enables employees from Harvard Pilgrim, Health Plans Inc. (our affiliate) and NTT Data (our IT partner) to award an annual grant, completely funded by the Foundation, to the local charity of his or her choice. Since the program began in 2002, these employees have directed almost $6 million to hundreds of organizations throughout our health plan service area – comprised of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
