Lurgio News for December 7, 2018

LURGIO NEWS
December 7, 2018

Dear Lurgio Community,

Wow! What a fast first week in December. It’s hard to believe that we have only two weeks to go before the holiday break. I always feel like December is a buckle-up-and-go time, both here at school and in our homes. If you’re looking for a way to slow things down this month, I’d like to invite you to our Lurgio Winter Concert on Thursday, December 13 at 7 PM in the BHS Theater. Every year our students and directors put on a beautiful show that helps me appreciate the beauty of this season. I hope to see you Thursday evening!

All the best,

Ed Joyce
Principal

Cub of the Week

Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the “Cub of the Week.”

This week we are honoring two cubs, Erika Adler and George Crawford-Eng.

Erika is well known to our staff as kind, energetic, and generous.  She is recognized this week for her willingness to go out of her way to help her peers.  Way to go Erika!

George is a standout also and his teachers appreciate his kind leadership and inclusiveness.  He is recognized this week for going out of his way to make another student feel included in the lunchroom.  Great job George!

Thank you, Erika and George.  You make Lurgio a great place to learn.
Lurgio Holiday Food Basket Collection
Lurgio will be collecting food for 30 families in need in our community.  We are asking that each homeroom collect 30 of their designated item (homeroom items list), and collect between $2-$3 per student to help defray costs of turkeys, milk, eggs, etc.  We are hoping to have all donations in by Thursday, Dec 21st

8th Grader to support WZID’s Radiothon

Every year, for two days, the 95.7 WZID radio station has the “Christmas is for Kids Radiothon”. During this Radiothon donations are collected so the kids in New Hampshire who are less fortunate can open presents during the holidays. Faith Guttman, Lurgio 8th Grader, and her entire family are championing this effort here in our Bedford schools. Faith will be setting up a collection box in the Lurgio Main Office this Monday. If you wish to donate, we are accepting coins, cash, and checks. Checks are to be made out to WAYPOINT (formerly Child and Family Services). If you need a tax deduction receipt or would like to donate using a credit card, please reach out to Helena Guttman, BSN, RN, WAYPOINT’s program nurse, at (603) 722-3148. If our school generates enough money, the Lurgio Middle School will be thanked live on the radio! Collections will run through the seventh of December.

Online Report Cards

In an effort to help both parents and students access Powerschool more effectively, we have put together a screencast. Click here to watch a tutorial on Powerschool and how to access grading information and report cards. Quarter 1 grades are available.

Guidance Corner

This week Students Against Destructive Decisions teamed up with the Books for Breakfast to decorate the school with a winter wonderland theme.  The kids got together and decided: “Our Holidays are ‘BOOKED’ being drug free” as they worked together creating Holiday spirit with a twist.  Watch for our next collaborative project when S.A.D.D. teams up with a Lurgio Club/ Athletic Team in the New Year.

Book Buzz

Books for Breakfast is abuzz about these books this week!
Nick B. from 7E:
James Patterson has that rare talent to make you feel sad for a character while laughing your head off. That's what he did in his book I FUNNY when you meet Jamie. He is 13 years old and in a wheelchair from being in an accident that killed his family. He lives with his uncle and his family and no one smiles at all. So Jamie calls them The Smileys. Jamie has a knack for comedy and enters a contest that helps with disaster victims. The book is actually a series that covers that one comedy contest event. This book is a great blend of jokes and a novel. Don't miss it!

Gwyneth from 8E:
If you like suspense, and a graphic novel, read PASHMINA by Nidhi Chanani. Priyanka lives in America and wonders why her mother her father and left India. Finding a scarf, known as a pashmina, she is wanting to go to India. Her mother doesn't want her to go but she finally does and sees the poverty and cultural differences. Read this and go to India!
