Columbus Day (No School)
|
Dear Parents,
After a five day week packed with academics, athletics, and activities, it finally feels like Lurgio is running at full steam. With our fall athletics underway, it is wonderful to see so many students participating in school sports. Our clubs and activities are also ramping up here at the middle school. The school and grounds are abuzz with activity both before and after the school day. If your child is not part of an activity or athletic team this season, keep an eye out for future opportunities.
Enjoy your weekend,
Ed
RAL Cub of the Week
Lurgio Middle School is starting a new tradition with the 2015/2016 academic year. Each week, teachers will nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.” The Cub will be announced in the Lurgio News.
This week’s Cub of the Week winner is Amanda Jonas from pod 8 South for outstanding kindness toward her peers. She has gone out of her way to be helpful and supportive her classmates without being asked. Congratulations, Amanda!
A classmate spilled his chocolate milk all over the floor. Amanda got up and began helping him clean up the floor. She spent 10 minutes of her WIN block helping and did it without being asked... or even thanked.
Seeking Science Professionals
Do you have a science career you want to share with students? We are looking for science professionals to run a workshop sharing their career experience with 7th grade students at our annual science career day on Friday, October 9, 2015 from 9-12. As a guest speaker you will be asked to present to a small group of students for two rotations, each 40 minutes in length. In the workshop you will provide an overview of your profession along with an activity or demonstration for the students using the tools or materials you typically work with. Come join us for a fun-filled day and get students excited about science!
If you are interested, please contact Amy Rockwell at rockwella@bedfordnhk12.net.
BHS/RAL Traffic Pattern
Thank you to everyone for your patience as we adjust to the new traffic pattern at Bedford High School and Lurgio Middle School. We made the change to improve safety for all students, staff, parents, and visitors, especially pedestrians.
We ask drivers to follow the new rules on campus to ensure our pedestrians' safety.
- Please use the parent pick up/drop off area from 7:30a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Do not use the central loop at that time.
- Please yield to pedestrians at all times when on campus.
- Please take turns at the main intersections in order to avoid delays and backups.
In addition, we recognize that the flow of traffic has created several bottlenecks. As we are working on ways to relieve that pressure, we are asking for two things.
- Please be patient. We will not be making any adjustments for at least two weeks as people become accustomed to the changes.
- Please give us your feedback. If you have ideas or suggestions about ways to improve traffic flow, feel free to complete this brief survey.
Lurgio Visitor Parking
Because of the new parent drop-off/pick-up lanes, visitor will not be able to park in the Lurgio upper lot closest to the school during drop-off and pick-up times. This lot is closed for parking from 7:30AM-9:15AM and 2:00PM-3:40PM.
Between 9:15AM and 2:00 PM visitors are invited to park in the drop-off/pick-up lot. Please remember to park parallel to the flow of traffic and to the painted sidewalks indicated by the yellow striping.
For all visitors with disabilities, our handicapped parking has not changed. Please feel free to use the Lurgio handicapped parking spots located at the end of the parent pick-up lot at any time throughout the day.

Smarter Balanced Assessment Results
Last spring, schools throughout New Hampshire (and in many other states around the country) administered a new test known as "Smarter Balanced." The tests, in language arts and math, were taken by students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11. They are computer-based tests that replaced the annual NECAP assessment.
We have recently learned that the public release of the assessment results will occur in November. This is a later release date than originally announced. The delay was caused, in part, by the need to hand score those few tests that were taken using paper and pencil. The results will include both school and state-wide summaries and individual student level results. We will send more information as it becomes available to us.
