Another Year Begins!
Dear Parents,
After two days of school, Lurgio is now running at full steam. Our students look happy as they move about the building, classes are actives, and the building is abuzz with great energy. Parents, thank you for sending us such great students who are so eager to learn. In spite of some traffic struggles (thank you for your patience), we enjoyed a wonderful first two days of school. We look forward to meeting you at our Open House and partnering with you to create an outstanding school year.
Sincerely,
Ed Joyce
Principal
7th Grade Open House, Tuesday September 1st, 6:00-7:30PM
The 7th Grade Open House will be held Tuesday evening. We will begin with a presentation at 6PM in the BHS Theater and conclude at 7:30PM with your students’ pod teachers.
6:00 PM - Presentation in the BHS Theater
6:30 PM - Pod Presentations with Parents
7:45 PM - Evening Concludes
We look forward to seeing you there.
8th Grade Derby Day Now Being Held September 3rd
Due to a conflict with the school picture day, we will be holding our annual 8th grade Derby Day competition on Thursday, September 3. Please remember that students need to bring a bag lunch including plenty of water for the entire day. We look forward to hitting the fields under the hot sun for another round of friendly competition and team building.
School Picture Day, Friday September 4th
We are pleased to announce that we are working with a new vendor for our school pictures. Geskus Publishing has a fantastic reputation for producing beautiful school portraits, and we look forward to working with them this year. You should have received printed information sent home with your student this week. If you need additional information, please contact Nate Fellman in the Main Office.
Cardigan Chaperones Needed
We are looking for chaperones for the 41st annual trip to Mt. Cardigan. If you are interested in an all-expenses paid hiking and camping vacation this Fall, please register to be a volunteer by completing our online volunteer form (click here). The Cardigan trip is an essential part of the academic experience for our 8th grade students. Taking nearly 400 students up a mountain each year is no mean feat and we could not do it without the generous support of our parent and community volunteers.
Free Cardigan Background Checks at St. Anselm College
We have been working with St. Anselm College to provide a more expedient and convenient way for you to complete your background check.
St. Anslem College is providing time from 9:30AM to 11:30AM on both Tuesday, September 8 and Wednesday, September 9 when our Cardigan Chaperones can come in and have their fingerprinting done for their background check. This service will be done free of charge, and all required forms will be provided at the college. There will also be a notary available to notarize the required forms. It really is one-stop shopping.
If you are available and interested in this opportunity please register by completing the online forms and following the instructions available at this [LINK].
Thank you again for your support!
New Traffic Pattern
This is a reminder of the new traffic pattern that we have implemented at the Bedford High School / Lurgio Middle School campus [LINK]. The primary purpose of this new traffic pattern is to increase safety for all of the pedestrians on campus. We also hope that it
improves the flow of traffic during school opening and closing times.
Because of the new parent drop-off/pick-up lanes, visitor will not be able to park in the Lurgio upper lot closest to the school during drop-off and pick-up times. This lot is closed for parking from 7:30AM-9:15AM and 2:00PM-3:40PM.
Between 9:15AM and 2:00 PM visitors are invited to park in the drop-off/pick-up lot. Please remember to park parallel to the flow of traffic and to the painted sidewalks indicated by the yellow striping.
For all visitors with disabilities, our handicapped parking has not changed. Please feel free to use the Lurgio handicapped parking spots located at the end of the parent pick-up lot at any time throughout the day.
I thank you for helping us to implement this new traffic pattern.
Before School Program
The Lurgio Middle School Bedford School Program is available to all families from 7:30a.m. to 8:30a.m. daily. A one-time fee of $65.00 entitles your child to attend as often as necessary for the entire school year. Participants will be serviced by school staff in a designated area; arrangements for extra help should still be made directly with your child’s teachers.
If your child plans on attending the Before School Program regularly or only occasionally during this school year, please complete the registration form on the reverse side of this letter and return it, along with your payment to the Lurgio Middle School Main Office or the Lurgio Middle School Before School Program by Tuesday, August 26, 2014. If there is a financial concern, please call the office at 310-9100 and it will be handled confidentially. Click here to download the Before School Program registration form.

Smarter Balanced Assessment Results
Last spring, schools throughout New Hampshire (and in many other states around the country) administered a new test known as "Smarter Balanced." The tests, in language arts and math, were taken by students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11. They are computer-based tests that replaced the annual NECAP assessment.
We have recently learned that the public release of the assessment results will occur in November. This is a later release date than originally announced. The delay was caused, in part, by the need to hand score those few tests that were taken using paper and pencil. The results will include both school and state-wide summaries and individual student level results. We will send more information as it becomes available to us.
Lurgio Crew
The Lurgio Crew program is being offered again this fall. This program will run on Fridays after school from 4:00 – 6:00 at the boathouse in Hooksett starting September 5th through the end of October. There is a $125 registration fee. There is a limit of 27 participants. If you are interested in registering, or have any questions, please contact Lori Ashooh at lashooh@comcast.net.

Family Physical Therapy Services Offering Orthotics & Pre-Season Screening
Family Physical Therapy Services and Lurgio Middle School are offering all student
athletes a pre-season injury prevention screening on August 27 and 28 after school in the nurse’s office.
All students who are planning on trying out for fall sports are encouraged to spend
10 minutes with the staff of FPTS. Each athlete will go through an evaluation of
range of motion of joints and muscles, and strength. Based on the results of this
evaluation each athlete will be emailed a list of exercises to perform to help prepare
them for the upcoming season. These exercises are intended to help prevent
potential injury and maximize an athlete’s performance.
Students participating in the ImPACT screening may stop by after their screening is complete.
Furthermore, during this pre-season screening FPTS will have sample orthotics for your child to test out. If you decide that you would like a pair, they will have order forms available. If you are unable to make it in on that day we will send home some literature and an order form with their screening paperwork. So if your child has been complaining about sore feet during the early part of this season, an orthotic may be the answer.

Of course, there may always be questions or concerns that we have not anticipated and therefore have not addressed in our public communications. If and when these do arise, we will make every effort to answer and address those questions and concerns quickly and professionally.
