January 22, 2021

Dear Lurgio Families,

Welcome to the second half of the year. While the first half of 20/21 was challenging for us all, I continue to hold onto hope that we can finish this year in a much more typical fashion.  Enjoy the weekend.

Be well,

Ed Joyce

Distance Learning Day Opportunities @ Joppa Hill

In an effort to identify ways in which our students can engage in educational extension activities during the distance learning days, we have partnered with the Joppa Hill Educational Farm to offer some outdoor learning opportunities this winter. This is also a way for students to get in some social time with their peers while practicing safe social distancing.  Our sessions next week on January 27-28: Photography and Meet our Animals are full. Please check back next week to see what will be offered in February.

Sigmund Brouwer Story Ninja Classes Continue

Sigmund Brouwer’s weekly Story Ninja classes continued this week. He will continue to offer two online classes per week for our students.  To access the schedule and learn about how to please see the student packet or the RAL StoryNinjaWritingClass webpage.

Weekly Meetings

We are still looking for members to join the Yearbook Club! We will meet with interested students on Fridays in the Media Center from 8:00-8:30 on their in person day. We are looking for students that are interested in photography and want to help create content for the 2020-2021 Lurgio yearbook. Students will attend meetings on their in-school day. Remote students should contact Mrs. Dennis dennisd@sau25.net or Mrs. Manley manleyj@sau25.net if they are interested in attending virtually.

Intramural Sports

Intramural sports will be held on Wednesdays for A-K students and Thursdays for L-Z students. Participants will engage in a variety of activities and sports from 3:15 to 4:00 on these days. Intramurals will primarily be held outside. It is important that students dress warm and wear a mask while attending. If you have any questions please feel free to email Mr. Gookin at gooking@sau25.net. Students attending will meet Mr. Gookin in the RAL cafeteria at 3:15. Any Lurgio student (remote or hybrid) is welcome to join.

Concurrent Learning

The Bedford School District continues to adapt our practices to support the needs of learners. As you are aware, the state of New Hampshire has seen increased positive COVID-19 cases. As a result we have had more students who have been required to quarantine and are unable to attend school in person. To support these students, our K-8 schools will offer synchronous opportunities for students to connect with their teachers. For some, this will be in the form of concurrent learning.

Concurrent learning occurs when students who are receiving instruction in the classroom are joined by their peers who are in a virtual setting. This is more difficult for the teacher to navigate; however, they have been offered training opportunities in order to assist quarantined students who would otherwise not have direct access to their teachers while at home. Please find the expectations for students and parents in THIS document.

Feel free to contact your building leaders and teachers with any questions.

Athletics Corner

Indoor Athletic Events

Home basketball games are not open to spectators during the 2020-2021 season, with the exception of (2) household family members from each player. Families will sit socially distanced on the bleachers, 6 feet apart, and masks should be worn at all times.

Students, staff, and athletes who are members of other teams (including basketball) are not permitted to attend games. A staff member will be at the door checking in spectators no earlier than 15 minutes before the start of the game. Spectators are asked to leave immediately after the game, especially when there is another game afterwards.

There will be no spectators permitted at any away games this season.

Specific information was sent out to basketball families regarding all of our modifications this season.

Book Buzz

In honor of this week’s presidential inauguration, we wanted to share books with you that have kid characters in the White House. Check them out!

First up is First Daughter: Extreme American Makeover by Mitali Perkins:

Sameera shows that the United States is ready for a Pakistani-born First Daughter. With her brains and bravado, living in the White House must be fabulous! Right? Actually, it’s no fairy tale. The Secret Service and the paparazzi follow Sameera everywhere. She misses her friends and even her school back home. So Sameera decides to escape. Will she be able to pull it off, or will her plan backfire on the entire First Family? This smart and funny novel continues the adventures of a Pakistani- American teen in the spotlight.

Funny man Dan Gutman's book The Kid Who Ran for President will make you laugh:

"My fellow Americans, when I was running for President, I said you should vote for me because I didn't know anything about politics... or how to raise taxes... or how to ruin the economy. I didn't know how to get us into a war. I said you should vote for me because I didn't know anything. Well, that was two months ago, and I'm very proud to say that... I still don't know anything. Let's face it: I'm a kid. I'm going to need a lot of help. Here's the deal I offer America: I'll help all of you if you all help me!"

When Audrey Met Alice by Rebecca Behrens is based on the real diaries of Alice Rooselvelt interwoven with the fictional character First Daughter Audrey Rhodes:

Living in the White House is like being permanently grounded. Only with better security. First Daughter Audrey Rhodes can't wait for the party she has planned. The decorations are all set and the pizza is on its way. But the Secret Service must be out to ruin her life, because they cancel at the last minute, squashing Audrey's chances for making any new friends. What good is having your own bowling alley if you don't have anyone to play with? Audrey is ready to give up and spend the next four years totally friendless―until she discovers Alice Roosevelt's hidden diary. The former First Daughter's outrageous antics give Audrey a ton of ideas for having fun...and get her into more trouble than she can handle.

Opposites attract! Sixteen-year-olds Katie and Drew really shouldn't get along. After all, her father is the Republican nominee for President of the United States while his mother is at the top of the Democratic ticket. But when Katie and Drew are thrown together in a joint interview on a morning talk show, they can't ignore the chemistry between them. With an entire nation tuned into and taking sides in your parents' fight, and the knowledge that--ultimately--someone has to lose, how can you fall in love with the one person you're supposed to hate?
