Lurgio News for November 13, 2020

LURGIO NEWS

November 13, 2020

Dear Lurgio Families,

Thursday evening marked the first meeting of our middle school parenting group. Many thanks to our guidance department for organizing this series, and to the parents who took time out of their evenings to attend. This discussion provided a great deal of insight into how our students are managing their days both at home and at school given the current events in our world. We were able to brainstorm some creative ways that parents and educators can support students’ success during these unique times. We look forward to future meetings--all are welcome. Please see the reminder below for more information and if you are interested in joining us virtually, please contact Mrs. Fitzgerald in the main office at fitzgeraldb@sau25.net

Best,

Ed Joyce

School Picture Retakes

If you wish to have your school picture retaken or if you were unable to make it to our first picture days back in October, Geskus will be returning on Monday, November 23rd from 8:30-9:30AM. Unlike previous years, Geskus is offering the opportunity to pre-order, as there may be many learners who did not see the camera on picture day, not just a retake. Please see attached a JPG outlining instructions on how your students can pre-order their photos taken on retake picture day as well as information on what to do if they previously ordered photos on original day! This JPG includes your retake day as well as the unique code they will need for online ordering.

If your student is learning remotely or has a distance learning schedule on that day, they can be brought to school for retakes and return home afterwards.

Reminders

Reminder: Fall Parent Conferences

This upcoming Monday marks the beginning of our fall parent conferences at Lurgio. You should have received information from your student’s teacher regarding signups for these virtual meetings. Parent conferences provide a dedicated block of time for parents and teachers to discuss a student’s academic progress and plan for future success. I believe that open communication is a vital piece of the home/school partnership and conferences are a major vehicle for that connection. While we typically invite parents into the building for conferences, that is much more difficult to do given the COVID-19 pandemic and our current mitigation measures. Most of our meetings will be held virtually--via telephone or video calls--but I expect they will be a valuable investment in the success of our students.

Middle School Parenting Group

Parenting adolescents can be challenging in normal times, and the current pandemic has only made it more complex. As a school community, we are looking for new ways to help families navigate these new waters. In that spirit, we are looking to start a group composed of parents and school staff that will get together—virtually or in person—to discuss how to best support our students through these most challenging and uncertain times. We will delve into an array of issues including working on academic readiness and organization, developing social and emotional skills, and promoting positive, healthy habits. We’re happy to welcome anyone who is willing to share what’s been working, who is looking to learn from others, or who is just seeking to connect with other parents in a positive and productive forum. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Mrs. Fitzgerald in the main office at fitzgeraldb@sau25.net

Contact Tracing through NH DHHS

It has been the district’s experience lately that NH DHHS is very delayed in contacting families with contact tracing information, and as a result, it’s possible that students come to school without knowing they have been in close contact with a COVID positive person (and should be quarantining).  Please know that if your child has been contact traced as a result of contact within school, you will be called by the school (most likely, Evelyn Chessie, our nurse) rather than wait for DHHS.  However, if the contact happens outside of school, we will not know about it.  My ask is that if your child tests positive, you contact the parents/guardians of any child who has been contact traced as a result of outside of school activities, so that the child can quarantine and/or get tested in a timely fashion.  Hopefully, things will slow down soon at DHHS.  Thank you!

RAL Extracurriculars Update

Are you looking to get involved in something here at Lurgio? Then be sure to listen to the daily announcements (print version), check out the RAL Latest News section of the Lurgio Website and your school email for more information about what is starting up. Here are five extracurriculars that have recently started: Booked for Breakfast Club,  Lion’s Den School Newspaper, Lurgio FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics, and Technology Student Association (TSA)

Staying Safe Outside of School Hours

We know it isn’t always easy, but we are encouraging students to continue using mitigation strategies outside of school hours. This means that students should be wearing masks and maintaining distance when arriving to school, departing school, and attending after school activities and athletics. Let’s work together to keep everyone healthy, safe, learning, and playing.

Travel Reminder

As you begin to plan for Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season, please keep in mind the NH DHHS Travel Guidance, which the Bedford School District is following:

If a staff member or student travels outside of New England, do they need to self-quarantine for 14 days upon their return to New Hampshire?

Yes. The general recommendation from the NH DHHS General and Employee Travel Guidance is that those who have traveled outside of New England need to self-quarantine and self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days upon their return to New Hampshire. Exceptions to this recommendation can be made for “essential employees” or for staff who have to conduct “essential travel” as outlined in the public health guidance linked above, and the Universal Guidelines. Schools/districts should develop policies to address situations in which students may need to travel for child custody and/or education related purposes (e.g., visiting colleges). You can find a link to this document HERE (pg. 6).

Also, students cannot test out of quarantine with a negative COVID-19 test. They must complete the entire 14 days. Please take a look at our Quarantining Protocol/Flowchart for more information.

In order to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff, it is essential that we adhere to the policies and procedures outlined in our Hybrid plan.

Flu Shots - and Bedford's Response to Symptoms

If a student receives a flu shot and develops mild symptoms (muscle aches, low fever, etc.,) is it ok to accept a doctor’s note to explain the new symptoms?

This must be a case-by-case decision. We cannot be certain if symptoms are due to COVID-19 without testing. It is reasonable to associate symptoms with recent vaccine administration if your child usually has symptoms after vaccination; however, this is not certain. In circumstances where it is not clear whether a person’s symptoms are new and unexplained, and in the absence of documentation to explain chronic or recurring symptoms, DPHS recommends exclusion through testing for COVID-19.

Hybrid Instruction Corner

Hybrid Schedule Calendar

We know that the new hybrid schedule can be confusing at times. In general, students with last names A-K come to school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and alternating Fridays. Students with last names L-Z come to school on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and alternating Fridays. Here is a handy color-coded district calendar for  kindergarten through grade 8 to help your family plan in advance.

Distance Learning Days

On Distance Learning Days, hybrid students should be engaged in different types of work assigned by their teachers on their in-person days. Students are not expected to sit in front of a computer screen for 6.5 hours, but they will be expected to complete tasks to create a bridge between their in-person days. Google Classroom is a resource for students to check assignments and tasks when they are working independently. Teachers are not immediately available to answer questions or work synchronously with students because they are instructing students in person every day. Teachers will answer questions via email if and when they are available.

Google Meet Expectations:

We strive to provide the best possible education and support for our students, while maintaining the privacy within each home. We thank you for your consideration as we continue to support students in productive and engaging experiences.

Booked for Breakfast is a chance to meet virtually every Thursday from 8:00-8:30 to discuss books, authors, book trailers and movies based on books. Check in with Mrs. Detwiler for the code to Google Classroom Booked for Breakfast and join us Thursday mornings.

Here are suggested book ideas from participants:

Anna B. from 7 North is a huge Harry Potter fan and recommends any of the books for the suspense and pacing. She also is a fan of WWII books and recommends two novels:

Making Bombs for Hitler by Marsha Skrypuch. Lida thought she was safe. Her neighbors wearing the yellow star were all taken away, but Lida is not Jewish. She will be fine, won't she? But she cannot escape the horrors of World War II. Lida's parents are ripped away from her and she is separated from her beloved sister, Larissa. The Nazis take Lida to a brutal work camp, where she and other Ukrainian children are forced into backbreaking labor. Starving and terrified, Lida bonds with her fellow prisoners, but none of them know if they'll live to see tomorrow. When Lida and her friends are assigned to make bombs for the German army, Lida cannot stand the thought of helping the enemy. Then she has an idea. What if she sabotaged the bombs... and the Nazis? Can she do so without getting caught? And if she's freed, will she ever find her sister again? This pulse-pounding novel of survival, courage, and hope shows us a lesser-known piece of history -- and is sure to keep readers captivated until the last page.

Anna is also a fan of Pam Munoz Ryan's Echo, also set in the beginning of WWII and follows four characters for decades. Lost and alone in a forbidden forest, Otto meets three mysterious sisters and suddenly finds himself entwined in a puzzling quest involving a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica. Decades later, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California each, in turn, become interwoven when the very same harmonica lands in their lives. All the children face daunting challenges: rescuing a father, protecting a brother, holding a family together. And ultimately, pulled by the invisible thread of destiny, their suspenseful solo stories converge in an orchestral crescendo. Richly imagined and masterfully crafted, Echo pushes the boundaries of genre, form, and storytelling innovation to create a wholly original novel that will resound in your heart long after the last note has been struck.

Andrea A. from 7 North: She was so inspired by Anna's comments about Echo that she got the book and Anna offered to reread it with her. Andrea is also a fan of WWII books and particularly likes Alan Gratz books. She recently read Allies and loved it.

June 6, 1944: The Nazis are terrorizing Europe, on their evil quest to conquer the world. The only way to stop them? The biggest, most top-secret operation ever, with the Allied nations coming together to storm German-occupied France. Welcome to D-Day. Dee, a young U.S. soldier, is on a boat racing toward the French coast. And Dee -- along with his brothers-in-arms -- is terrified. He feels the weight of World War II on his shoulders. But Dee is not alone. Behind enemy lines in France, a girl named Samira works as a spy, trying to sabotage the German army. Meanwhile, paratrooper James leaps from his plane to join a daring midnight raid. And in the thick of battle, Henry, a medic, searches for lives to save. In a breathtaking race against time, they all must fight to complete their high-stakes missions. But with betrayals and deadly risks at every turn, can the Allies do what it takes to win?

Mrs. Detwiler shared a Kwame Alexander book trailer for his latest book, Playbook: 52 Rules to Aim, Shoot and Score In This Game Called Life.

You gotta know the rules to play the game. Ball is life. Take it to the hoop. Soar. What can we imagine for our lives? What if we were the star players, moving and grooving through the game of life? What if we had our own rules of the game to help us get what we want, what we aspire to, what will enrich our lives? Illustrated with photographs by Thai Neave, The Playbook is intended to provide inspiration on the court of life. Each rule contains wisdom from inspiring athletes and role models such as Nelson Mandela, Serena Williams, LeBron James, Carli Lloyd, Steph Curry and Michelle Obama. Kwame Alexander also provides his own poetic and uplifting words, as he shares stories of overcoming obstacles and winning games in this motivational and inspirational book just right for graduates of any age and anyone needing a little encouragement.
