Dear Parents/Guardians,
In an ordinary year, I would be writing this letter to you to communicate details regarding the winter athletic season. However, this is no ordinary year and I thought it would be important to keep you apprised of the current status of planning for winter sports. This fall, the format of many of our sports had to shift in order to accommodate safety precautions and mitigation strategies. While we did not regularly engage in interscholastic play with other teams in our league, our coaches were able to include a higher number of participants and spend more time on skill development. Our athletes and coaches displayed high levels of resiliency in the face of a less than ideal situation, and for that I am grateful.
Going into the winter season, there is a lot to consider. Typically, Lurgio Middle School offers the following sports during the winter season: D1 Boys’ & Girls’ Basketball, D5 Boys’ & Girls’ Basketball, Coed Wrestling, Coed Spirit, and Coed Volleyball (Feb. & March). While we were able to be outside for the entirety of the fall season, winter is a bit different because these teams hold practices and competitions indoors. In addition, many of these sports involve close contact. While I feel that athletic participation is an important part of our students’ middle school experience, I am insistent that safety and protection of the academic environment take first priority.
I will have more information in the coming weeks regarding the dates, format, and potential modifications. I am closely following Bedford High School in their planning process and will rely on guidance from NHIAA and Tri-County League as we prepare for the winter season. I want to thank you in advance for your patience; as soon as I have more information, I will communicate it to all families.
Thank you for your support of our athletes, coaches, and teams during an extraordinary year.
Sincerely,
Kristen Gauthier
Assistant Principal & Athletic Director
