LURGIO NEWS
May 3, 2019

Dear Lurgio Families,

I wrote to you earlier in the day about the State Assessments that our students will be taking next week. If you missed it, click here for access. I wanted to add just one additional note that I appreciate all of the work that you do as families to support our students as they approach these high-stakes assessments. We have a truly wonderful and supportive community that pulls together to see our children succeed. I feel honored to be a part of this community and our successes.

Sincerely,

Ed Joyce

Cub of the Week

Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the “Cub of the Week.”

This week’s Cub of the Week is Amirdhini Pechiammal. Amirdhini is known by her teachers and fellow students for her kindness, inclusiveness and diligence.  She is an active member of Lurgio’s Technology Student Association. Recently, she helped to organize a donation of used athletic uniforms as part of a state-wide TSA community service project. These uniforms will be donated to schools in Africa that are unable to provide team uniforms for their students. Thank you Amirdhini for offering your time and effort to this wonderful project on behalf of Lurgio!

Invitation for Past Members of RBS Rhythmics and RBS Singers!

We hope to connect with former Riddle Brook School chorus members. We have plans to celebrate 20 years of music-making at RBS during the spring concert, to be presented in the Bedford High School Theater on Wednesday, May 15, at 6:30 PM.

At this Spring Concert, we will share a few reunion songs including “We Are The People Of The Twenty-First Century” (from the first concert, in October, 1999.) Also planned: “Guacamole” and “Born To Make Music,” which have been sung every year by our 3rd grade chorus, as well as “Fireflies” and “One, From A Chorus Line.” These last 2 songs have been the final set of Riddle Brook School concerts for the last 9 years. We look forward to seeing many alumni and we will invite them to sing along.

The celebration begins with alumni sign-in starting at 5:45. Past chorus member will receive a special program booklet, then are invited to attend a reunion gathering in the music room. The concert begins at 6:30. Please pass this to anyone you know who is a Riddle Brook School chorus alumnus. Mrs. Munz can be reached at this email:

Weekly Features

Book Buzz

In anticipation of author Donna Gephart’s Lurgio visit in two weeks, we were all buzzing about her fantastic books this morning at Books for Breakfast.

In Your Shoes:
Miles is an anxious boy who loves his family's bowling center even if though he could be killed by a bolt of lightning or a wild animal that escaped from the Philadelphia Zoo on the way there. Amy is the new girl at school who wishes she didn't have to live above her uncle's funeral home and tries to write her way to her own happily-ever-after. Then Miles and Amy meet in the most unexpected way: think flying shoe!

Lily and Dunkin:
Lily Jo McGrother, born Timothy McGrother, is a girl. But being a girl is not so easy when you look like a boy. Especially when you’re in the eighth grade. Dunkin Dorfman, birth name Norbert Dorfman, is dealing with bipolar disorder and has just moved from the New Jersey town he’s called home for the past thirteen years. This would be hard enough, but the fact that he is also hiding from a painful secret makes it even worse. One summer morning, Lily Jo McGrother meets Dunkin Dorfman, and their lives forever change.

Death by Toilet Paper:
Benjamin is about to lose a whole lot more than good toilet paper. If he doesn't make tons of money fast by selling candy bars and winning contests—like the Royal-T Bathroom Tissue slogan contest—his family will get kicked out of their apartment. Even with his flair for clever slogans, will Benjamin be able to win a cash prize large enough to keep a promise he made to his dad before he died? Or will he lose everything that matters to him?

How to Survive Middle School:
Eleven-year-old David Greenberg dreams of becoming a YouTube sensation and spends all of his time making hilarious Top 6½ Lists and Talk Time videos. But before he can get famous, he has to figure out a way to deal with:

6. Middle school (much scarier than it sounds!)
5. His best friend gone girl-crazy
4. A runaway mom who has no phone!
3. The threat of a swirlie on his birthday
2. A terrifying cousin
1. His #1 fan, Bubbe (his Jewish grandmother)
1/2. Did we mention Hammy, the hamster who’s determined to break David’s heart? But when David’s new best friend, Sophie, starts sending out the links to everyone she knows and her friends tell their friends, thousands of people start viewing his videos.

Tech Corner

As we head into the end of the school year, we need everyone’s help to keep students in a regular routine of charging and bringing their chromebooks to school every day.

Athletics This Week

Inclement Weather & Schedule Changes

Weather cancellations can be tricky during the spring season, but you can stay informed in a variety of ways. We try to make the call by 1PM in the case of inclement weather. Please check the Lurgio homepage for school updates or the weekly schedule on our athletics website. In addition, you may want to check your email because coaches often communicate with parents once a call has been made.

Weekly Schedule

As always, the weekly schedule is available on our athletics website.
