Special Note: 7th to 8th Grade Math Recommendations

Dear Seventh Grade Parents,

It will soon be time to register your student for their 8th grade classes. On March 20 we will open the parent portal. Prior to that, mathematics teachers will be making their recommendations 8th grade mathematics. When selecting child’s mathematics course for next year, please keep in mind that students in advanced mathematics (Algebra A or Algebra 1) must pass each competency in their seventh grade course in order to advance to the next course in a sequence. Also, please be mindful of your child’s seventh grade mathematics teacher’s recommendation. We typically find that students who achieve an 80% or higher are those who are most successful in the next level of mathematics. For this reason, teachers may recommend students not to continue to advance in to the next course and rather to spend eighth grade relearning concepts not yet mastered. Ultimately, if your child has passed each competency for the course, the decision about whether to advance is up to families and students. We offer our recommendations based on our prior knowledge of student success and our understanding of your child after a year here at Lurgio.

If your child is not yet competent in any competency in their seventh grade mathematics course, we do offer competency recovery. This is typically completed within the school year by working with the teacher to come up with a plan to demonstrate competency. When this does not work for a student, we do offer summer school for students who want to shore up their skills, demonstrate competency, and proceed with their advanced mathematics progression.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s mathematics teacher.

Sincerely,

Ed Joyce
