LURGIO NEWS

June 11, 2021

Dear Lurgio Families,

Today closes a most challenging school year. We faced many hurdles together as parents, staff, and students. As I reflect on the Lurgio Community, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude and pride. Parents, thank you for all of your support and flexibility as you aided your children and sometimes the school at large to handle the numerous changes to our operating procedures. Staff, I appreciate your indefatigable drive to serve your students and support one another. That is why Lurgio is a very special place.  Students, you have been my inspiration all year. I am awestruck at how you have consistently exceeded expectations as you navigate each new challenge in front of you.

I wish you all a wonderful, restful summer.

Be well,

Ed

Happy end of the school year! Thank you for returning all Lurgio library books.  If students have overdue books, they have received a library notice from their homeroom teacher.  Please check in with your student to see if they have a library notice.  Sometimes the missing books are in their backpacks or they may need help searching...

Tech Corner

The Bedford School District is asking parents of students currently in grade 6 to select an option for your student to participate in the District’s Chromebook 1-to-1 Program at Ross A. Lurgio Middle School for the 2021-2022 school year. We believe this program is a tremendous opportunity for our students and teachers to improve teaching and learning.

Our Chromebook 1-to-1 Website has detailed information for parents regarding the program and we encourage parents to review the 1-to-1 Program and Parent Resources sections.

Parents are asked to purchase a Chromebook device for their student choosing one of the following options:

  • Purchase a Chromebook on your own,

  • Purchase a Chromebook directly from the district (first year accidental breakage/theft insurance included) with a one-time payment (only one non-touch model is being offered to families this year)

For families that do not opt into the Chromebook 1-to-1 Program, a loaner Chromebook device will be provided to the student to use during the school day. Please click on this Program Selection Form link to submit your choice for your student. This form will need to close on June 11th so that chromebooks can be ordered for the start of school. You will receive a confirmation of your program option selection and further information will be communicated during the summer based on the program option you have chosen for your student.

Please complete the form even if you are not purchasing a device through the district.

Thank you!

Book Buzz

The Boys Who Challenged Hitler by Philip Hoose: At the outset of World War II, Denmark did not resist German occupation. Deeply ashamed of his nation's leaders, fifteen-year-old Knud Pedersen resolved with his brother and a handful of schoolmates to take action against the Nazis if the adults would not. Naming their secret club after the fiery British leader, the young patriots in the Churchill Club committed countless acts of sabotage, infuriating the Germans, who eventually had the boys tracked down and arrested. But their efforts were not in vain: the boys' exploits and eventual imprisonment helped spark a full-blown Danish resistance. Interweaving his own narrative with the recollections of Knud himself, The Boys Who Challenged Hitler is National Book Award winner Phillip Hoose's inspiring story of these young war heroes.- Amazon Review

Murder is Bad Manners by Robin Stevens: Two friends form a detective agency—and must solve their first murder case—in this “sharp-witted debut” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) that is the first adventure in a brand-new middle grade mystery series set at a 1930s boarding school. Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong are best friends at Deepdean School for Girls, and they both have a penchant for solving mysteries. In fact, outspoken Daisy is a self-described Sherlock Holmes, and she appoints wallflower Hazel as her own personal Watson when they form their own (secret!) detective agency.-Amazon Review

Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella: Audrey wears dark glasses all the time, even in the house. She almost never goes out, doesn’t talk to new people, and finds making eye contact to be nearly impossible. But then one day she meets Linus. Linus is her brother’s friend and a sensitive spirit with whom she can talk through her fears. He makes her laugh and doesn’t leave her feeling like she’s being judged. As their friendship deepens, Audrey’s recovery gains momentum, and she and Linus begin to develop feelings for each other. But how can they have a future together when Audrey hasn’t dealt with her past? And how could anyone ever love her once they’ve seen her at her worst? “An outstanding tragicomedy that gently explores mental illness, the lasting effects of bullying, and the power of friends and loving family to help in the healing.”—Kirkus Reviews, Starred

I Will Always Write Back : How One Letter Changed Two Lives by Martin Ganada: The New York Times bestselling true story of an all-American girl and a boy from Zimbabwe and the letter that changed both of their lives forever. It started as an assignment. Everyone in Caitlin's class wrote to an unknown student somewhere in a distant place. Martin was lucky to even receive a pen-pal letter. There were only ten letters, and fifty kids in his class. But he was the top student, so he got the first one. That letter was the beginning of a correspondence that spanned six years and changed two lives. In this compelling dual memoir, Caitlin and Martin recount how they became best friends -- and better people -- through their long-distance exchange. Their story will inspire you to look beyond your own life and wonder about the world at large and your place in it. -Amazon Review

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir: BOOK ONE IN THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING SERIES One of Time Magazine’s 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time; Instant New York Times bestseller; From #1 New York Times bestselling author Sabaa Tahir; Amazon's Best Young Adult Book of 2015; People's Choice Award winner - Favorite Fantasy; Bustle's Best Young Adult Book of 2015. Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free. Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear. It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. How will Laia cope when her brother is arrested for treason?- Amazon Review

LURGIO NEWS

June 4, 2021

Dear Lurgio Families,

It is hard to believe that we are heading into our last week of school. In response to the warm weather that is predicted for next week, it would be wise to have students pack their water bottles and dress in cool, comfortable clothes. Also of note, Superintendent Fournier has made masks optional when students are at their desks.  We will be doing our best next week to make sure the students and staff are as comfortable as possible as we finish the school year.

Be well,

Ed

Book Buzz

Alan Gratz has a new book out called Ground Zero set on two important dates with two protagonists. In time for the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, master storyteller Alan Gratz (Refugee) delivers a pulse-pounding and unforgettable take on history and hope, revenge and fear -- and the stunning links between the past and present.

Need some magic in your life? Try Elana K. Arnold's latest book, The House that Wasn't There. Alder has always lived in his cozy little house in Southern California. And for as long as he can remember, the old, reliable, comforting walnut tree has stood between his house and the one next door. That is, until a new family—with a particularly annoying girl his age—moves into the neighboring house and, without warning, cuts it down. Oak doesn’t understand why her family had to move to Southern California. She has to attend a new school, find new friends, and live in a new house that isn’t even ready—her mother had to cut down a tree on their property line in order to make room for a second floor. And now a strange boy next door won’t stop staring at her, like she did something wrong moving here in the first place. As Oak and Alder start school together, they can’t imagine ever becoming friends. But the two of them soon discover a series of connections between them—mysterious, possibly even magical puzzles they can’t put together. At least not without each other’s help.

Do you believe in ghosts? Author Linda Urban does. Check out her latest book

Almost There and Almost Not. California Poppy has been dropped off, yet again, with an unsuspecting relative. This time it’s her eccentric Great-Aunt Monica, a woman she’s never even met. Aunt Monica has no idea what to do with an eleven-year-old, so she puts California to work researching their ancestor, the once-famous etiquette expert Eleanor Fontaine. California soon discovers that Great-Great-Great Aunt Eleanor is...not exactly alive and well, but a ghost—and a super sensitive one at that. The grand dame bursts into clouds of dust whenever she loses her composure, which happens quite often. Still, an unexpected four-legged friend and some old-fashioned letter writing make this decidedly strange situation one that California can handle. Just as California’s starting to feel like she’s found a place for herself, life turns upside-down yet again. Thankfully, this time she has some friends almost by her side.

How about a novel in verse? Wishes, Dares and How to Stand Up to a Bully by Darlene Beck-Jacobson could be a perfect fit for you. In this poignant novel, Jack is worried about his father, missing in action in Vietnam. His family, new best friend, and a bully unexpectedly all help Jack find the courage to do the right thing, not the easy thing.
