Lurgio News for December 20, 2019

LURGIO NEWS
December 20, 2019
Dear Lurgio Families,
The Lurgio Community closed 2019 with a wonderful, generous act of charity. Through all of our collective donations during the Lurgio Holiday Food Drive, we were able to put together and deliver over 35 food baskets for local families. It is moments like this that I am most proud to be a part of this fantastic school.

I wish you all a wonderful break. I hope that you are able to spend some quality time with your families over the next week. I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year as we strive to make 2020 a great year!

Sincerely,

Ed Joyce

Book Buzz

If you're looking for a book over the holidays, Books for Breakfast suggests Incommunicado by Randall Pratt.
Just about everyone is incommunicado in the small, sleepy Oregon coastal town of Sea Park during the winter of 1941. That is, until Pearl Harbor is attacked. Then Sea Park springs to patriotic life. But is Ruby Opal Pearl (aka Jewels) Stokes the only person to see what’s really happening here? Tommy Kaye, the one person in her life who has provided security, shelter, and a smidgeon of respect—and who owns the biggest resort on the coast—is now the cause of the town’s rage. Tommy’s Japanese ancestry makes him the prime target of an angry mob, not to mention he’s also rich, has a shady past (which includes Jewels’s eccentric mother), and everyone in town owes him money.

As the town’s patriotism blossoms into paranoia and turns violent, Jewels has to do something to protect Tommy from internment (or worse), even if that something is going up against the town and the government, not to mention the FBI. Thus begins a twelve-year-old girl’s war within a war.

Special Note: Food Basket Reminder

Dear Lurgio Families,

This is just a reminder that Lurgio students are spending time this week putting together food baskets for local families in need. Each advisory group has been given a designated food item (LIST). New News

Cub of the Week

Each week, teachers nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff reviews all nominees and selects the “Cub of the Week.”

This week’s Cub of the Week is Connor Felthun. Connor is a helpful, kind member of our RPG club.  He is always the first to volunteer to help out new members to the club, either to create their character pages or to explain the rules and play options.  He is even willing to give up his play time to help a fellow club member.
Thank you, Connor, for making Lurgio a great place!

Holiday Basket Food Collection

Lurgio is once again collecting food items to create holiday food baskets for families in the community. Each advisory has been given a designated food item (LIST). We are also asking that each student brings in $2-3 to help defray the costs of additional food items like turkeys, ham, milk, etc. All money and food items need to be brought in by Wednesday December 18th. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Dr. Fairhurst (fairhurstr@sau25.net).

Holiday Candy Gram

Next week during lunch, students will be able to purchase Holiday Candy Grams ($1 each) to send to their friends and teachers. There will also be raffle tickets ($1 each) for donated prizes.  Our 7th Grade Stand By Me Student Committee has organized this event with proceeds going towards their May field trip.

Festive Holiday Sweater Day

Next Thursday, 12/19, will be Lurgio's first "Festive Holiday Sweater Day" for both staff and students. There will be announcements to remind everyone, but please make sure to let your students know. Have fun and can't wait to see everyone's festive holiday wear.

RAL Kitchen News:
The breakfast program will be featuring a delicious and nutritious Strawberry Banana Smoothie. It’s filled with strawberries, bananas and vanilla Greek yogurt. This fresh and naturally sweet combination of fruit and yogurt is a perfect way to give the brain and body a beneficial boost of energy. Additionally, this smoothie provides a healthy dose of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, all essential nutrients for the body. In addition to breakfast combo meals, the kitchen will be offering a homemade cinnamon roll muffin. This lovely, healthy treat will keep you feeling full and satisfied with lots of long lasting energy from whole grain complex carbohydrates. Our from scratch baking also helps to limit unhealthy ingredients and removes processed and artificial preservatives. Start the school day off with a bang and don't miss out on these healthy, wholesome NEW breakfast items.

The hot lunch program has 2 exceptionally tasty and healthy meals.  Monday, December 16th we will be serving local grass fed organic burgers from Brookford Farms in Canterbury. Why should our students be eating grass fed beef? There are a number of nutritional benefits when comparing conventional grain fed beef and grass fed beef, the major one being the fat profile. Grass fed beef is a great source of beneficial brain boosting omega 3 fatty acids.  On Thursday, 12/19 we're serving grilled cheese with homemade tomato soup. A perfect warm and comforting meal on these cold December days.

Book Buzz

It was a lucky day this Friday the 13th at Books for Breakfast Cafe with our Holiday Book Swap. Readers know what they like as there was very little swapping. Lots of happy readers during the holiday break.

The favorite was Ransom Riggs' book Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. A mysterious island.

 An abandoned orphanage.

A strange collection of very curious photographs.
This is an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As the story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.
