October 30, 2015
I can’t believe that we are on the eve of the 6th Witch Way to the 5K. I am excited about tomorrow’s event for so many reasons. We get together as a community and engage in some healthy competition to support our school. It’s such a great time and a great cause that even our own Senator Kelly Ayotte is coming out to run in support of technology at Lurgio.
The WW5K is a fantastic event, and it is only possible through the work of some fantastic people. Sincerest thanks to all who have done so much again this year to help make this race a reality. If you have not signed up yet, you can sign up tomorrow morning prior to the race.
See you there,

RAL Cub of the Week
Lurgio Middle School is starting a new tradition with the 2015/2016 academic year. Each week, teachers will nominate students for the Cub of the Week Award. Nominated students are those who have shown exceptional kindness, tolerance, and respect during the week. Each Friday, the Lurgio administration and guidance staff will review all nominees and will select the the “Cub of the Week.” The Cub will be announced in the Lurgio News.
This week’s Cub of the Week winner is William Curran from pod 8 North for going out of his way to ensure that a student didn’t sit alone during lunch. Congratulations, William!
A Recall Message from the Nurse:
In case you are not aware, a recall was issued for ALL Auvi-Q epinephrine autoinjectors. Here is the link with instructions on what to do:
Some parents have provided me with Auvi-Qs at school. I will accept epi pen replacements with the same dosing without obtaining new orders from the doctor since most orders do not specify a particular device. In the mean time, be aware that I do have stock epi-pens in my office. Please feel free to call with any questions. Thank you, Evelyn Chessie
Reminder - New Quarter Begins
Just a reminder that Qtr. 2 will begin on Monday, November 2. We ask that students check their schedules to see what new IA they will be attending!
What an awesome Books 4 Breakfast today! We had students from both grades and both the Fan Club and many staff members joined us in costume and scary music fun! Students also helped clean up and stayed at 8:30 to Face Time with Writer-in-Residence Sigmund Brouwer. Thank you to PTG for providing healthy snacks for us all!
Also, famed YA sports writer and commentator Mike Lupica will be presenting at Concord, NH's Gibson's Bookstore on Wednesday, November 4th at 5:30. It is free and open to the public. Families are invited to call and reserve copies of his books for him to autograph at the event. Media Specialist Mary Pat Snow and Reading Specialist Kate Schoedinger will be there!
In other literary news, please enjoy the books our students are buzzing about:
Maggie/Wonder Woman from 8 East recommends Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama
This is post-apocalytpic sci-fi story and giant humanoids known as Titans have wiped out humanity. What's left of mankind is hidden is a three-walled city and people think their huge wall will protect them from the Titans. Titans take over the world and kids have to save them. It's a great read that is totally action packed!
Shea/Zombie in 7 South recommends Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko:
This author opens the world to autism. The character Moose lives on Alcatraz because his father works there and his sister, Natalie, goes to a special school in San Francisco. This is all set in the 1930's when people didn't know or understand autism much. Moose and Natalie have a great relationship and it's fun to watch in the book. I like how he wants to protect her and watch her grow but he also is worried for her and holds her hand because he doesn't want to let her go.
Ms. Woods/Witchy Witch in 8 North recommends The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart:
We are reading this book aloud and discovering the story together since I have not read the book! This book is highly recommended by Mrs. Snow and Mrs. Schoedinger and it really delivers: great action and character development. As a class we are predicting together, talking about word choice, action scenes, dialogue, and what is most visual for us. We've met Mark and know he is sick, wants to climb a mountain, loves his dog Beau, and he runs away. We are totally captivated by this book and I love reading it out loud to my students. It's been wonderful to demonstrate my thinking through a book with them!
Alexis/Nerdy Student in 8 North recommends the James Patterson book Confessions of a Murder Suspect:
This is an awesome murder mystery but what I like best about it is the confession at the end of every chapter from a different character. Tandy tries to solve a murder and she is wondering if she actually committed the murder herself. So these end-of-chapter confessions are helping her figure things out. But is it her? You don't know! Tandy doesn't remember anything! This is a great book!
Hunter/Lumberjack from 8 South recommends Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto
This is a Manga about Ninjas! It has comedy and lots of action. A boy wants to become the greatest Ninja that ever lived in the land. He is totally serious. And it's totally funny. Read it.
Sam/Ninja from 8 South recommends This Book Loves You by PewDie Pie:
It’s is a book of funny quotes. PewDie Pie is the most subscribed YouTuber in the world. He has 39 million fans and more than 10 billion views. Have fun reading this book of quotes. It's great.
Fall Photos Wanted for Yearbook

Smarter Balanced Assessment Results
Last spring, schools throughout New Hampshire (and in many other states around the country) administered a new test known as "Smarter Balanced." The tests, in language arts and math, were taken by students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11. They are computer-based tests that replaced the annual NECAP assessment.
We have recently learned that the public release of the assessment results will occur in November. This is a later release date than originally announced. The delay was caused, in part, by the need to hand score those few tests that were taken using paper and pencil. The results will include both school and state-wide summaries and individual student level results. We will send more information as it becomes available to us.
Wrestling Coach Vacancy
Lurgio Middle School currently has a Wrestling Coach vacancy for the Winter Sports season. If you are interested, or know anyone who is, please use this LINK to complete an application. If a coach is not in place by Friday, November 6, Lurgio Middle School will not have a wrestling program this year.
Spirit Tryouts Date Change - Tryouts Now on November 16
Lurgio Middle School has changed Spirit tryouts from Monday, November 2 to Monday, November 16. It has come to our attention that many cheerleaders are still in the midst of their fall seasons, so we have decided to delay the start of the Lurgio Spirit season. If you have any questions, please contact Coach Watson.
Youth Counselor, Donna LaRue, MA, LADC, LCMHC posts a weekly, helpful parenting newsletter article, as well as other relevant material on her website.
Within the category of Social Competencies, Interpersonal Competence is the fourth of five assets we're exploring. With this asset in your child's life, they will exhibit empathy, sensitivity, and friendship skills. The article offers these suggestions:
- Create a home where friends are always welcome.
- Introduce your child to people of many different ages.
- Allow your child to grieve when relationships turn sour or fade. Stressing that it’s not okay to just “drop” a friend.
- Make sure your child is connecting with people in person and not just through the computer/texting.

Check out Ms. LaRue’s webpage for more information about drug abuse prevention as well as past asset newsletters by clicking here.
